Teflon's Ht Build

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. It's been ages since I've been back to dtvforum.info. So long in fact that when I tried to log in my username didn't exist anymore! Have recently returned to Adelaide permanently and moved into a new home which has (finally) allowed me to have a dedicated home theatre room. I thought I'd start a build thread so that I could get advice/ideas to work around the (minor) problems that I'll encounter.

The room is 3.5 by 5.5 metres. It's a two storey house and the room is on the lower level. It's double brick and concrete between ground floor and the second storey... this will make running wires quite difficult. My floor plan is as below - I plan to run the wires against the walls and conceal them with cable conduits from hyda.com.au (unless anyone has better ideas?).The red line is where I'll be "hiding" the cables.

I managed to choose the cabinet yesterday and spent tonight putting it together. It's a Bello AVSC 2061 - I'm very happy with the choice considering the offerings I've seen from the various furniture stores around Adelaide. It is solid... embarrasingly, my brother and I couldn't carry the whole box into the house - we ended up opening it in the driveway and carrying the pieces in one by one!

The shelves are moderately thick glass and there is plenty of room to add future components when the upgrade bug hits.

In terms of gear, it's getting a bit old but I've been happy with the performance over the last few years.

AV Receiver - Marantz SR6003

Front stage - Vaf DCX gen III, Vaf DC6 gen III

Rear stage - will probably be some Polk Audio bipoles I still have... I'd given my VAF DC-7s gen IVs to my brother in law to babysit and don't have the heart to ask for them back... an excuse to do some shopping maybe.

SW - Richter Thor.

The most pressing issue is choosing a display... Auditioned the Sharp Aquos 70 inch yesterday but having had only plasma TVs for the last 6 years I wasn't convinced about the image. So at this stage I'm leaning towards the Panasonic ST 65 inch (if I can find one in Adelaide!) or the Samsung 64 inch series 8. Any other displays I should consider? Hoping to not exceed 3.5K but will stretch if I can be convinced.

Other components to consider... a BR player and a power amp. Will keep this updated with new photos as I make progress. Ideas for hiding cabling would be great. And if anyone knows how to childproof some rear speakers then please put forth your solutions (the fronts have been heavy and sturdy enough in the past to not be a problem). At this stage I plan to put a barrier around them when not in use... that'll probably be simplest.
