bbar Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Interested if someone does locally for 25'ish but 42'ish (52USD - 25% plus conversion plus local postage) is outside of my comfort zone!
FMB Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 I do have the download availability (180gb of which we use about 30 - 40gb). I have the time available. I have a post office literally on the other side of the wall. There are only two things preventing me from doing this. Firstly, I don't have a BD burner. I'm happy to buy one as a 'legitimate business expense' but would appreciate someone finding the cheapest and most suitable one to buy and use (I have no expertise in this area). I assume it would also need appropriate software. Secondly, I have no idea how to convert a torrent file into a BD format. I would need some advice from others. I would do it near enough to cost price which I expect would be about $20 - $25 as suggested. So if you're interested and would like to offer some support, I'll take it on.
mil098 Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) If anything local is happening please put me down too? edit: I'm in regarding the local burn $25 sound reasonable Edited October 7, 2010 by mil098
AndrewW Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) So if you're interested and would like to offer some support, I'll take it on. MSY have an LG BD Writer for $129, that's the cheapest I can locate locally. umart are my usual go to guys, but they've let me down this time. As for software, you should get some form of burning software with the drive. And the torrent will allow you to download a file in .iso format which the burning software will easily allow you to burn to disc. edit: I'd be interested in getting a copy of this as well. One other thing I noticed is that 50Gb BD media is pretty expensive, $65 for a 5 pack from umart, so $13 each! Edited October 7, 2010 by AndrewW
davep Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Ill put my hand up for a copy of the demo disk, and even visit the bloke in jail if it is dodgy
AndrewW Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 FMB or anyone that's thinking of making discs, have a look at the avs thread lots of good info there on downloading, extracting and burning the disc, all with free software.
GSpot Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 How does this guy get around copyright issues?I would have thought the studios would jump all over someone selling something like this? (and the same concerns apply if someone was to copy and redistribute here locally). I was thinking the same thing, but still wouldn't mind taking part in a GB. I also wonder if this thread will attract the attention of men in suits.
petetherock Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Nice but too expensive for me at USD 52. If it was about Aus 30, I will bite. If anyone is burning them in Oz, and willing to send them to Sydney, let me know? Cheers
FMB Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 I did search for the media and found the same ones at U-Mart for $65 for 5. If anyone finds them cheaper, please let me know. I found this LG burner for $119 at Computer Alliance. I have to go there in the next few days to pick up a repair. It doesn't mention software. I can replace the DVD burner in my PC with this quite easily. I suspect that copyright isn't an issue because the disc contains only short clips from each movie. I'm not a copyright lawyer, but I suspect it would be OK. I should probably do some research to be sure though. I wouldn't charge for my time, but at $13 per disk plus postage and packing, I suspect that the price will be closer to $25.
Gutty Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Yarrrr me matey's, did one of ye mutant dogs call for a pirate ? Yarrrrrrr !

I'm in for one at that price and looks like you may have 24 more also! Edited October 7, 2010 by bbar
FMB Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Found the Verbatim 5 pack for $52.19 plus $9.99 shipping. However, shipping cost is the same if you buy two packs. That would work out at $11.44 per disk. I went to the post office and asked about options. In a standard jewel case, they have two options. Including postage to anywhere in Australia, they would cost about $3 each to send. Express post would be $4.60 but would need some extra packing eg bubble wrap to protect the disk. I'd say $20 should be a fair price. I could probably have this up and running early next week if you're all keen. I just need to make sure I'm not going to get arrested by the copyright police. Is there anything on the AVS forum about copyright (I'm not a member)?

I'm in at that price I doubt that you'd be done for copyright, my guess is that this would come under fair-use. But I'm not an IP lawyer.

I'm keen for one also.

As detailed on the avsforum post, imgburn will do the job, and it is free I've sent an e-mail to Steve who created it asking him whether he's looked into the copyright issue. I'm off home to meet the installer for my new projector setup. I'll download the file on Friday (Sat morning.). I'll pick up the burner when I go in to collect my repair and I'll place an order for 10 disks (one of which will be for me) tomorrow. I will keep you updated and let you know when I've done and tested the first disk. The nwe can sort out how to order and pay for these things.
Super Greg Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Ok, I started the torrent download last night. One hour to go until completion. Will burn tonight and report.
mr-happy-pants Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 $20, $25, $30, whatever! A man's time is a finite resource. I'll commit for one. Graham
