dmcgowan Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Harvey Norman?? Which store and how long ago, if you don't mind me asking... Get Real, 12-24 months ago in the Chadstone store. I think the Chirnside Park store has / had them as well. At the time they were $13,995 RRP I think? To be honest, on a 3 minute listen, they were better than I expected. That they are THX certified means little to me, they just sounded better than I thought they would. I think Encel also used to have them in a room in Richmond but that was when they were still distributing them. Happy listening

I belive they have sold the floor stock, and have not replaced them. My audtioning of these speakers was less than satisfactory - however, I dont think the room helped the sound quality.

Happy listening Cheers mate, been to 3 different Harvey Normans and all of them didn't sell anything above the synergy range. Funny thing is I went into one a couple weeks ago and asked if they had the 'reference' range in store. He said that they didn't exist. Had to explain to him that they are the next range up from synergy and he thought that Harvey Norman was the only retailer for Klipsch...
GETREAL Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 I have lost count how many times I have read posts by people seeking speaker advice and the most common questions raised are 1 Budget and 2 What will they be used for? So from that would you spend $6000 on 2 Boston Acoustics BT2's for music and spend $6000 on Focals or Paradigm for movies?I know what you are saying good is good. And maybe I should of stated more clearly what I was looking for in my original post instead of giving examples. What I am after is a speaker that will be SOLEY in a dedicated home theatre. I want to use an AT screen with the LCR's positioned behind it. DUe to the size of floor standing speakers this may not be possible so as the examples suggest I am looking for in cabinet size speakers that can deliver movie sound effects and soundtrack with out compromise due to thier size. Also a speaker can be designed purely for HT as you can use subs for most of the bottom end leaving the LCR's to deliver detail. I am know audiophile so if the use of in cabinet style speakers is far too much of a compromise compared to floor standing speakers please let me no. I have also asked the question if good quality book shelf speakers would do the same job but have yet to recieve a reply. I may well be wrong but I tend to agree with Mark Techer and believe that things should be built for the task and many speaker manufactures seem to have do just that. The problem is that many are not available here or are very expensive. I'm in the same boat as you, would like a LCR arrangement behind an AT screen. I've noticed Woodlake has this setup but with floorstanders behind the screen, not sure how high they sit but I'm assuming that the tweeter/midrange should be positioned at ear level, having them sitting much higher may affect sound. I'm definetly no expert so anybody who knows better can correct me if they wish... Would still like some floor standers for 2 channel listening though, just not behind the screen....

They are outstanding for either.I have had Focals and Paradigm setup side by side in my house. I love them both, not equally, but that is a different story. DSC01094.JPG

50mxe20 Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Added the jpeg above. I've even written a bit about comparisons. Check out the Focal and Paradigm threads.

CAVX Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 I'm sorry but I don't really understand the concept of "Speakers soley for HT".Good speakers are good speakers, bad are bad. Most movies are full of music sound tracks that can only sound better and make the movie more enthralling if the sound is good. IMHO, one should specify a budget and find the 'best' speakers one can for that budget. Interpret 'best', as most liked by the person buying. Those are fair statements. To answer the questions, speakers built for multi channel sound - IE THX certified speakers - tend to have different directivity patterns from those originally designed for music where THX speakers have controll over the vertical directivity. This is usually done through the use of multiple HF drivers. The original designs used two tweeters and modern designs either use 3 tweeters or a small 3/2 D'Appolito array. A more tradional speaker will have a more 'open' vertical pattern. When the 2 tweeter designs were introduced, the "audiophile community" claimed that the dual tweeters caused comb filtering of the high frequencies. The interesting thing is that many of the very high end speakers did this anyway. This dual tweeter design can be seen in speakers including VAF Research and Dynaudio.

dmcgowan Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 If someone was intersted in a Gold one off system, let me know. I still have Gold demo gear (inc Gold Monitors) I am clearing out that was brought in for CEDIA demos. I would happily design a full system inc acoustic treatment system, pre/power, Audyssey, etc to clear it all out. This is still not cheap gear, but you will never get an offer like this again. My time is worth a lot, as many of the top companies in Australia engage me to design cinemas for them.Unfortunately you will never find Triad in a retail store. The custom nature of the brand, the fact that they do not manufacture a floor standing speaker and that they are a high end brand, mean that most retail stores will not stock them. To be honest, its the way Triad prefer it. they are custom solution basd product, with no B.S. With over 100 speakers in the range, the fact that they will custom engineer a speaker to resolve a design issue, will manufacture a speaker any colour free of charge or manufacture a speaker in any timber veneer, means they are unique in the industry. Even experienced dealers have trouble getting their head around the brand and the options available. The offer is there is someone wants a complete cinema solution. PM me if interested. Regards, David David, The speakers and Audyssey unit arrived this morning so I'm looking forward to unpacking them and installing them over the weekend. For those interested, David has proposed a sound treatment program for our theatre / lounge room and did us a great deal on a 5.2 Triad setup and the Audyssey Sound Equalizer. It's an impressive pile of boxes! Cheers, Darren

dmcgowan Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 (edited) that is going to kick some serious butt Sejanus, I sure as hell hope so. The way things panned out, I'll get to install the speakers and enjoy the room for a bit before the room treatments arrive so that will provide an interesting before/after comparison once the recommended absorption panels go in. From a one hour home visit last night, it is also clear David knows his stuff inside, outside, backwards and sideways!!! I think I managed to stay on top of all the things he suggested but only time will tell. Very impressed with what I've seen so far. Cheers, Darren p.s. I will try and take some pics this weekend and document the last weeks of the build. Should also give praise to the guys at Klapp here in Melbourne who've done the install throughout our house (60 network points, 20 odd coax runs, in-ceiling sound in 3 rooms, pre-wiring the theatre in 5.2 and putting the screen in so a big job) and who get the envious task of mounting the dipoles next week Edited October 15, 2009 by dmcgowan
