Costco - Prices And Range

Recommended Posts

I'm going next Friday ... taken the day off work, have put the dogs in a kennel, and spending the weekend stocking up in Melbourne.

I'd buy local, but it;s a complete flaming rip off down here B)

Just remember what I said about where to park. As far as possible to the far right from the entrance behind the lift block.

Sorry to sound like a doubting thomas but that doesn't sound very cheap at all.

1. I buy lamb sides for $6.50 a kilo, that includes cutlets, backstraps, rump, butterfly leg and boneless shoulder all at $6.50 per kilo

2. Roquefort at Coles is around $40/kilo from my recollection

T-shirts sound good, but really no cheaper than you would find in lowes or bigw from time to time.

And even if it is a little cheaper overall, what are your petrol costs and how do you value your time travelling out there?

It sounds more like hype than good value, but I guess I won't find out for sure until they open in Sydney.

If you can get Roquefort anywhere for $40 per kilo, that's a great, great deal - Coles in Melbourne doesn't stock Roquefort, and the lowest price I have ever found for Roquefort in Melbourne is around $85 per kilo. And I really don't know where you can buy Frenched Lamb Cutlets for $6.50, or Roquefort for $40 per kilo, but if you can, then Costco is definitely not for you, that's for sure. You have a wonderful Coles; where is it?

I seem to recall it was around $8.00 for 200g, but it may have been $8 for 150g. Also it may have been Woolies that stocked it.

For the lamb, I buy a whole lamb butchered to order for $6.50 a kilo. If you are clever about ordering your cuts you can maximise the premuim cuts. For example I get cutlets, backstraps, boned and rolled shoulder, rump steaks, butterfly leg or leg chops, shanks.

Costco is all about bulk so I figure the comparison is valid.

Sorry, slightly OT I know.

Does anyone know what store will be the largest or are they all going to be built the same everywhere

cheers laurie

It depends on the site they find but I think I read on their website that their average world wide is about 13,000 sqf (I think), something like that anyway.

My bad, I thought I had been looking at the Costco USA site and thought it must have been square feet, but here is the info from the aussie site

Warehouse sizes:

* 6,500 to 19,000 square meters (average 13,100 square meters)

Let's be honest. The main reason why most of us are living in overcrowded cities like Sydney or Melbourne is because our employers are here. To compound our woes, we are saddled with high mortgages and line up outside Costco and Aldi just for being able to make our repayments to the banks.

Given a large sum of money (like the Lotto jackpot), how many of us would throw it all away and willingly take a sea-change or tree-change ?

Just bought a WD 1TB ext HDD from DSE Doncaster for $149, saving myself, 1) $50 , 2) a trip across town to Docklands , 3) the $60 Costco annual membership fee. Makes you wonder how long Costco will last, given the the Oz retail market is fairly cut-throat as is.

We took the sea change 17 years ago from East Subs Sydney to warm sunny Cairns, we have HN, JB, Good Guys, WOW, Myer, 2 Retravision's and 3 specialist HT stores, 3 Coles, 3 Woolies, Kmart, Target and about 4 IGA's etc, Costco won't come here anyway and we don't really need em.

You've got to be kidding right? Like you would go all the way across town to a place like costco who is known for it's wholesale discounting,to buy a measly hard drive? BTW I just bought a 1.5 tb seagate drive from MSY for 164

And for your information the only "throat cutting" is by retailers to us consumers. Why are you people so anti competition, bring it on I say.

I'd probably keep the money :P and then move to the country (where I'd probably build a local Costcos) :)

I meant "throw the job and hectic lifestyle away". Who would be dumb enough to throw the money away ?

BTW if someone really wants to mint money from their Lotto winnings, they should become the local franchisee for Harvey Norman in a relatively remote location. Fewer people and fewer items to handle - just remember to push Monster cables regularly.

I live in Melbourne because I love the climate. If I have to leave, I'd head to Canada near the ski facilities.

I'm going next Friday ... taken the day off work, have put the dogs in a kennel, and spending the weekend stocking up in Melbourne.

There is still a huge queue for those people wanting to sign up - like around 50 metres long - when I got there at 10 am yesterday, and today at 11 am. Perhaps if you rang them and asked them whether it would be quicker if you filled in the membership form first and then just front up there early (when they open) to have your picture taken for the membership card.

I also had a slight problem with the attendant at the car park entrance today; she told me the underground car park was full, and to do a U-turn and park in the western open car park. So I drove into the underground car park to do the u-turn, with her shouting STOP! . There were heaps of car parks there so I just kept going, turned right at end of short lane then proceeded to far right hand corner and parked my car near the lift.

My new procedure is to grab a trolley, put a couple of items in it and leave it near the office equipment lane, and then just walk around to check out the stuff I want. Then when I am ready, I return to the trolley, dump the office stuff back on the rack and proceed to get the stuff I really want. Saves a lot of bumping into other trolleys and getting stuck when I havn't made up my mind what to get.

Have fun on Friday.
