For those of you contemplating using the Jaycar 240watt plate amp module, I have bad news.

They have run out of stock and have no plans to source a similar replacement item.

To the best of my knowledge no one else locally has a similar product in terms of performance, output and flexibility of connection in this price range.

What is really galling from my perspective is that I use(d) this item in three designs, Austral, Minstral and CW12 and have been buying them regularly for 4 years. The fact that they didn't even have the courtesy to warn me as a regular purchaser is typical of the total lack of customer service evidenced by so many companies in the 21st Century.

Yes, I am pissed off..............but at least I have given them the courtesy of telling them so before posting here.

Andrew, dont stress out too much. One of my sub amp models has the same size plate and mounting holes... Has a bit more power though, 300W.

The image attached will give you an idea of what it looks like. The model you need looks identical but has a different backplate designed specifically to match the jaycar 240W.

Hello Andrew,

Sorry to hear that. When they say out of stock are they talking about all of their stock Australia wide (in their retail stores)? You may have to call the stores independently to confirm- sometimes the computer data is not too good. Also Electus Distribution their wholesale arm may have other stock. Of course this all presupposes that your are happy to hold an inventory of this stuff and do a all time last buy from them.

Alternatively since they are not carrying this amp anymore- perhaps you could ask them if they could advise their supplier for direct sale to you- of course you would need to buy reasonable qty, but atleast its an option. On one occassion I asked Jaycar for some detailed t/s specs for a speaker an they sent this to me- it included the suppliers name since it was the suppliers original data- perhaps you could ask something sneakily similar- the manufacturers specs for your amp.

Best of Luck

thats a bugger andrew, especially given the key products in your range that rely on it. Hopefully you can find another local alternative eg redgum that can help you out.

JA..............I buy from Electus, not Jaycar, the warehouse is empty!

There may be some floating around the retail traps, but I would have to drive all over town and pay trade/retail price not OEM (I've been there with Jaycar before..........with a driver I used that they also discontinued without warning..........yes, they would order them in for me alone, if I ordered 500 pcs, they would not give me the manufacturers details however.

All I would reasonably expect is that they let you know if an item is being discontinued so you have the opportunity to stock up until you can effect the necessary re-design work and source a new item...... That is not too much to ask, I believe.

I'm currently carrying in excess of $50k in inventory because of manufacturing lead times JA, thats already way too much.

Stuart, send me a price list BUT the Jaycar unit has high level input/output as well. THAT was its major advantage over all the others out there.

I hope I can find some replacement Al, you cant sell an $899 subbie with a plate amp that costs $500 to buy.

Hi Stuart,

Do you have a website with product listing and prices? If not can you post them here ;)

Depends on the volume occupied by the replacement unit Grumpy....if it's very close, maybe not a problem provided the plate size fits on the box.

Sorry to hear about that, Andrew. I've lost track of the times that old "Sorry, we don't sell those anymore" line has had me seeing red ;)

Hopefully it will prove to be a blessing in disguise and the replacement (whatever that turns out to be) will be even better.

Cheers

Sorry to hear bout that, I use one myself and was considering getting a 2nd one for stereo subs...

Have you considered Dayton products (as sold by parts express)?

Hi Andrew,

Just wondering what you use the High level in/outs for and why it is an advantage?

Hi Drizt, I have a new website that is 95% complete but I have been holding back releasing it until the R&D is complete on all the different models and options. I currently have 12 plate-amp models ranging from 100W to 600W each with different options and features. I am very close to completing these and will be releasing them all at one time with the new website. I'll post on here when I launch the new site, will even put together a special PA price list for you guys...

Andrew,

What about WES components in Sydney, do they sell something similar at a similar price? Maybe if you make enough subs you can afford to import them dirct from I assume somewhere in China.

JDH.

The sub amps WES has are dearer, and whilst they have high-level inputs, not until you get to the 400 watter do they have low-pass down to 40Hz (smaller ones only go down to 60Hz low-pass).

And yes, I'm pi$$ed too as I have been using the Electus/Jaycars.

I need the 40Hz and the high-level inputs for amps without a sub output like typical tube integrateds.

Grrrr!!!

I use a Dayton plate amp as fury suggested. I guess the only issue would be import duties may kill the viability of the product once landed.

(I've got a dayton 1000watt sub plate amp - It goes alright, doesnt like 2 ohm much though ;))

Agee about Wes, they often have the same stuff as Jaycar & often much cheaper then Jaycar.

don't pretty much all aussie sub makers? use jaycar sub amps I mean??????? You can spot them a mile away. Must be good for so many manufacturers to use them...

cheers

You're dead right jimmy, myself, VAF, Whatmough/Whise all use the Jaycar designs...........which makes it even harder to understand why they dropped them.

They do perform exceptionally well at the price point.

The WES ones are not in the same league

Can you still get the 350w c/w remote version or is that cactus too?

[/b]

They're still listing and carrying the 350watter Mondie, and have advised it will continue to be a stock line.

BUT I have heard all this before............................

If you guys are all using this amp could you guys not form a Co-op to import them together? surely Whatmough and Vaf could afford to and there must be some kind of indication of the manufacturer somewhere on the PCB or something? Or surely a nice bottle of scotch would buy the info from an electus mole ;)

When I built my sub I used the 240w module, but could not stop the hum. I took it back and got the 350w remote model and have been happy since.

That is really slack of the distro Andrew - so sorry to hear for you

I often like to view setbacks positively as another 'opportunity'. For example, if a small redesign is needed now, would you reconsider active versions of your existing minstrals say with a 3 way plate amp of SGR?

Our company now has a set policy of change notification now to cover product obsolescence by our suppliers - we guarantee at least 6 mths chnage notice wherever poss, and often up to 2 years. It costs us, but in our industry (pharmaceutical/biotech) continuity is critical and change control expensive
