The number is just the sony number and follow the prompts, then they will give you a recommended dealer to fix it for you Thanks Hi Drazman, do you reckon it's worthwhile asking for the fans to be replaced too? or is the firmware upgrade sufficient to quieten it down to acceptable levels?
donkey33 Posted March 7, 2008 Author Posted March 7, 2008 Yeah, what's your general impression Drazman? You sounded just as p!ssed as me about this so are you happy with the end result?
regien Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Have been following your posts.Dealer replaced my first 40xbr but still noisy fans.European Electronics Moorabbin did a firmware upgrade yesterday but it did not work !! Came back today and replaced fans, now I have no noise, thank god.Sony have been most unhelpful thoughout and only acknowledged firmware upgrade after I reported seeing it on this sight. A BIG THANKYOU TO SRS 13 and drazman2000 for their shared information, I was about to send the second set back the day I read SRS13 success and replace it with a Panasonic Plasma.
drazman2000 Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Yes i think it is important to replace the fans, but i think it depends, if you have relatively quite fans already, the firmware upgrade should do the job. I think it is worth getting the upgrade first, then if no change just replace the fans. Im still thinking whether i should get them to replace my fans for the 2nd time because the noise is still persistant, but i think i am overreacting as noone else can hear it! I guess i will have to get used to it... I think that if it bugs me in a month or so, i am going to call sony and demand a replacement, i might ask to upgrade me to a bigger tv because of all the troubles i have been through. I also had an argument with sony on the phone, as the guy said he was unaware of the upgrade, i said that iis impossible as others have had theirs upgraded, he said well sorry i don;t know about it. i said whats the point of working at sony if i know more things that you and he hung up! Oh well... However i think the technition that has been to my house is sick of coming, it was the third time hes been and there might be a forth in the near future if i am still unhappy with the noise level. Anyway good luck to all you guys out there with this problem. If you guys need HDMI cables at a low price and great quality hit this link http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...em=370030062611 or if you do not want to go through ebay PM me or email me at mdrazic@exemail.com.au and i can supply it to you through there, the price will be $20 per cable including express shipping and $18 per additional cable orders over 10 will receive more discount. PLease email or PM me with your requests and i will send you more details. Thanks

No prob's, am glad the information helped. I was in the same position as I was going to return it and get either the LX508, 58 Samsung or 58 Panasonic. Am happy now with the TV although a bigger set would have been nice! Drazman with regards to the fans, I personally dont think having them replaced is an ideal solution - please note this is not based on anything other than my preference. If the firmware upgrade does not work then I would be asking for a refund. I am lucky the upgrade worked for me. If others have had success with this I am sure there are many that would like to hear it.
darkrider Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 got my x46" today and played few games and BD on ps3, no loud buzzing sound detected, even on a low volume of 8. my set model was manufactured on Jan 2008, i guess it already has the newest firmware update?
regien Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 My set is a jan 2008 but it had bad fan noise.Sony Tech said and also showed me how one of my fans was faulty, it did not spin smoothly. Sony admitted they have a 2% default rate. Dealer said that due to intensive sale promo the last few months Sony was having trouble keeping up with the demand and there have been delays when ordering sets. They have probably been churning them out to meet the increased demand, Another dealer told me that only the first and last sets are checked as each batch comes off the production line.Faulty sets that are returned by the dealers are repaired by Sony and then sent to such places as Panasales who sell them at reduced prices(Panasales guy told me this) Sony tech explained that as my fans were faulty the firmware upgrade did not slow them down, after replacing them when set first turned on you can hear one of the fans start to kick in noisily for about a second and then it abruptly slows right down, not at all audible unless you have your ear right up close to the fan outlet. I would suggest having firmware upgrade first and only have fans replaced if not successful. The fans were replaced with the same sort. If you really love this tv as I do persevere as it can be rectified.
songaz Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 when they replace the fans, do they do it at your house? or would you have to get your tv picked up?
Supertramp Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 Guy from PES came today and picked up my XBR40 today and said there was a software upgrade he had to do, so he reckons that it will be back mid next week, if it comes back noisy im going to take it to Sony and smash it over the CEO's head, this will be a lesson to him not to dick-around honest hard-working people, and a lesson to me not to buy shithous sony products ever again. Keep you posted, on what unfolds.
drazman2000 Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 Good luck to you! I just got fed up with mine because the noise is still their after the fan replacement and firmware upgrade!!!! So i contacted sony and they are now going to replace the TV for me! I explained to them that i could have bought a shitty TV that was not faulty compared to paying top dollar for a sony! And they agreed and understood, so they are organising a replacement, and i made it clear to them to test it becfore i receive it because i do not want the same problem!
songaz Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 good on you for taking it up to sony, keep us updated on how the new set is when it arrives

donkey33 Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 I spoke to Sony to express my concerns but they won't do anything until a tech has seen it which is fair enough so I'll get a tech out when I can get a day off work. Other than that, if the tech does nothing, he said we can organise another set or a refund. I assume the tech won't fix it so I might go for a refund and get a different set all together.
Guest Chucky1110 Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I had the firmware upgrade on Friday. had only a little chance to check outcome due to noisy neighbours. So far I cannot hear any noise anymore. The only way to hear the fans at all is to place ear right on top of them.
mouldy Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Just called sony and arranged for one of their repairers to contact me. The guy I spoke to didn't sound like he was aware of the problem or the firmware upgrade, so this could be quite interesting. Will keep everyone updated.
songaz Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 i just had my firmware upgrade too, took about 5 mins for the actual upgrade. The technician was in and out within 10mins. results were pretty good, i can no longer hear the noise unless i put my ear next to the fan, even then its pretty quiet considering i use to be able to hear the fans loudly with volume on at 15 from about 3-4m away, this is a pretty good change
drazman2000 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Yes i agree the noise is not as bad as it was before the firmware upgrade! But you can still hear it ever so slightly, i demand the TV to be silent like its samsung counterpart (f8)!
tjmckay Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Has anyone had the Firmware upgrade/ fans replaced in WA ??? I live 190kms away from Perth, anyone had a Sony tech come out so far from a city ? I have a Aug 07 46X3100 with very loud whirring sound even from about 5m away. When watching from about 3m away I can hear it over TV at volume level 26.... now that's loud !!
Jonesman Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 (edited) Had noisy Fans replaced today on my 46X3100. Only a very slight improvement - however - still completely unacceptable. The fans that were taken out were Nidec UltraFlo 40mmx40mmx10mm . ie Model U40X12MLZ7-53 and were 14dB (see full specs here): Nidec Ultraflo Technician was quite reasonable and agreed that it definitely was unacceptable and next step is to try the Firmware fix. (However - he is unable to install the firmware fix until next week.) Will let you know how it goes. Edited March 20, 2008 by Jonesman
Guest Jacaranda Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Back in September 07 I purchased a 46XBR from HN in Woden ACT, good deal I thought, $4000 including extended warranty. Number 1 arrived it had two stuck pixels, patchy back lighting and a noisy fan. HN replaced it within a week. Number 2 had patchy back lighting and noisy fan. Number 3 had 2 stuck pixels and noisy fan. Number 4 had 1 stuck bright pixel, patchy back lighting and a noisy fan. On all of these occasions Sony were called and a tech only came out once to check the problems, that was on number 2. On the final call to Sony after number 4 had gone back I told them the main reason for returning all the units was the noisy fan. The thing sounded louder than the fridge. HN took them all back and swapped them no problems, then gave me a complete refund when I'd had enough and told Sony to shove it. For 4 grand the thing should be perfect! All had an August 07 manufacturing date, made in Japan. I went back to my CRT for now as I'm not sure what I'm after.
donkey33 Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 Got a tech at my place right now. Not home but have someone there updating me. Will update once I get home tonight to test it.
casserole dish Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Just spoke to a tech again after about two weeks of inactivity. After initial calls sounded promising, this time he suggested that changing the fans and performing the firmware upgrade may have no effect and that people should just realise that this type of technology has fans and so will produce noise. To that i say f&%# off, i didn't pay $4k for a supposedly premium tv for it to sound like a fridge from 4m away, and besides, why doesn't my mates tv (exact same model, different manufacturing date) have the same fan noise? Am now awaiting a call back to tell me when they're coming with the firmware upgrade. If those fixes don't work I think I'll have to follow drazman's lead and get stuck into sony for a replacement or refund.
donkey33 Posted March 27, 2008 Author Posted March 27, 2008 Got home last night after the tech had left. He did the firmware update on the TV but said that on his computer, it was showing that the firmware update had been applied but on the TV it hadn't. He wasn't sure if it had been applied then so he said to leave it for a few hours and see if you can still hear the problem. I wasn't home otherwise I would have told him to apply it again. Anyway, I have to listen. Last night I couldn't hear anything but I had the TV up loud and forgot about it. He did say that if this doesn't work, he wants to replace the transmission in the TV. He reckons that is the problem. I'll test it over the next few days and will go the transmission replacement if the buzzing is still there.
drazman2000 Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 Sony is very slack, still no call back in regards to a replacement! I guess i will have to call them again and abuse the crap out of them!
