King - Actually that's the stock platter. You can upgrade to ones so thick, they're almost taller than they are round!

Mark - cheers mate, emotionally erect. That's a good one. But not a good vision of me to have of you!

Will do Willow. I just dropped the heel of my tonearm to see if that effects the bottom end. I can definitely say it has given it a slightly fuller sound.

Awesome music collection 'Yip. Very impressed. Tell me how you get on with the heel down.

I thought the choice of colour and the hearts looked kind of cute and reflecting the more feminine side of you :)

Will do trick. I've been spinning a bit this weekend. The difference might be there, but it's subtle. I just don't pay super close attention to notic tweaks like this I think.

Glad you like my music, it's a bit all over the place!

Marty, I'll show you my bloody feminine side!

OK, so after several years of not much activity, here we go on the first real significant tweakypoos to the setup.

Some of you may recall that I recently un-retired my Linn Axis and got it set up and strutting its stuff in my living room system.

The thread and photos of that fun little excursion are here:

http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php/topic/98970-return-of-the-king-my-linn-is-back

Well, doing that helped re-ignite the whole I-must-fiddle-with-my-system-for-the-pure-pleasure-of-fiddling-with-my-system bug.

And of course to make some improvements.

But you know, after several years of low interest in the hi-fi thing (still loving the music) the tweaking bug has fired and inspired me to addressed the one thing that has really been bothering me; my Technics sitting on a lower shelf rather than the top deck.

I don’t know if any of you other multi-turntable guys can relate, but it’s always bothered me that it’s down under other shelves. Annoying to reach in and change records, and, well, hidden away and all that - it just belong up top!

So, with the family away one weekend, I had the time and space to embarked on the extensive task of pulling my entire rack apart to re-configure it to allow just that.

Luckily I have a great rack for this - The Archetype system from Salamander Designs. It’s a US company (I bought the rack around 20 years ago when I lived there) and is incredibly flexible.

Unfortunately with no suppliers in Australia I had to overcome a couple of challenges. The main one being, the sourcing of extra legs to allow for the addition. They’re threaded rods which are relatively easy to get. But I needed black threaded rods, which are a lot harder to find. But find them I did, and so deconstruction followed by construction began.

I’ll let the story unfold with the photos below:

First, a recap of what has been the pretty standard configuration for the last couple of years.

Poor little 1210, tucked away down there. It will not do! So to the drawing board I went. And came up with this:

And so, one fine Saturday morning, with working tunes being provided with my iPhone and UE Boom (we always need music don't we? Especially when pulling our system to bits) I began work. And while I love my family dearly and missed them, it was a very pleasant day, with nobody around to interrupt, or be delivered to sport, or ask me what the hell I was doing.

Now, the new legs. Indeed I did source some black (or should I say, grey) legs to match the rest of the rack. But they come in 3 foot lengths. Luckily, my neighbour George, who is a complete champion on so many levels but in particular because of the fact that he has the World's Best Shed, was able to help me cut them to length. I include extra photos of his shed, for those of us who are ShedMen.

Alrighty, enough of that, back to the task at hand. The rebuild. Several hours into the procedure, I can see it coming together:

And, finally, as the sun began dipping below the yardarm, or whatever, with the gear re-installed, re-connected:

Behold!! The Rackatron 2000 Mark II!

Aha, I bet you didn't see that coming did you? the sneaky 90 degree turn that tucks so neatly into the corner.

Some detail shots. I know I'm straying from the purist idea of having the rack just for equipment, but I really like the idea of incorporating some of my records, especially some box sets, and 45s, into the equation.

And to finish off, a major victory which happened about a year ago, and helped make the room truly ruly wonderful.

After years of petitioning from me, my good wife finally crumbled and allowed me to store my records in the same room - she was worried that they would overtake the room. But of course, as we all know, they just make it that extra bit more wonderful.

These shelves are an IKEA hack. They normally come in 4 x 2 configuration. But I knew I needed more. So I bought two 5 x 1s, got the saw out, and Robert's your uncle.

Nice shed. But not as nice as 2sheds'.

Good to see back yip. Very classy room and setup. Keep posting as we miss your posts

Handy to have a neighbour like that!

Nice work, Bunyip  :thumb:

Lovely setup and I do like the records in the ikea cabinet - LPs are just like books - they add to the room decor with colour!

Great setup @@Bunyip Can i ask what's in the Third Man Records box?

Indeed you can sir. It's a tasty selection of funk and soul with a healthy smattering of eclectic goodness thrown in. Basically an ever changing mix based on the last tie we had friends over and decided to have a record party (thus the presence of the Technics) or from my last DJing gig.

A wee update.

Rolling on from my newfound enthusiasm, I've made a small change to my living room system - that being the purchase of a Rega CD-R to replace my old Marantz CD-63. Without wanting to sound wanky, this player truly was a great leap forward. All around the sound is improved with tighter bass being one of the very noticeable improvements.

A sweet piece of kit that rounds out my living room system perfectly.

Hi guys - It’s been a while and my main system has evolved rather a lot since I last updated many years ago. Just sitting here on a wet Melbourne weekend loving the sounds coming from my current iteration. After years of fiddling and swapping I reckon I’m listening to my end game. Adding the SVS 3000 Micro was the final piece of the puzzle to round out the bottom end of my PMCs. And the Hi-Fi Rose streamer combined with Roon has fully dropped me into the hi-res streaming camp. Rarely play records these days even though I’ll never get rid of them.
