dddp Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 welcome to the forum mickr - personally i would not record to DVD from the tuner, limited editing i think is the biggest problem. Recording to DVD from HDD after editing has been fine for me, did a couple of Beatles shows that worked out really well. Edited out ads beforehand. Everything stayed in synch for me.

It also has a function where you can check the signal strength so if “Seven digital 1” is stronger that “Seven digital 2”, you can skip “Seven Digital 1” and use “Seven Digital 2” as your channel 7.It also has a function where you can supply extra power to the aerial via the coax (aerial) in! It says something in the manual that this is for using with an indoor antenna – weird and I have not tried it. more later and I'd be interested in seeing other's experiences. Cheers, NS Anyone able to provide feedback on signal strength issues? I get the impression this could be one downfall of this unit if you live in a low-mid reception area (I'm in a medium strength area I think - reception is ok but not great). Don't want to get this unit only to find I can't get adequate reception through it's inbuilt tuner. I've got an LG RH397D unit on it's way as a replacement unit (under warranty) for an older unit that was "uneconomical to repair" but HN have already told me I can swap for something else. The Sony unit and Panasonic EX77 (now 78?) and possibly the Topfield 5000 are the likely alternatives (although I don't have a separate DVD player, and would probably prefer to have the capacity to dump recordings from HDD to DVD if required - otherwise Topfield would probably be at the top of the list.... decisions, decisions!)
diesel Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 The new Pioneer units (560HXS and LX61D) have apparently addressed this issue, so I imagine the new Sony 870/970 units which are based on the Pioneer units should benefit from this.

It can be upgraded to any SATA drive above 160Gb.Guy I have been looking for a hybrid HDD DVR. Looked at the Sony RDRHXD890B and it sounded good, plenty of features. But being able to upgrade the 160gb SATA to 1tb has me sold on it. I'm off to JB Hi-Fi to haggle for a good price under the $499 rrp.

Wouldn't you want something with HD tuners like aHD PVR or the Panasonic XW300 DVDR with dual HD tuners???

No, I have a Toppy TF7000HD for that. . I wanted a hybrid hard drive recorder for SD and TVS 31 (analogue) and the Sony fits the bill. I did some ringing around for prices and I picked up a Sony RDRHXD990B with 250gb hard drive from Bing Lee Alexandria in Sydney for $450.00. I will post my findings on its' use and features.
Geforce1503560728 Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 How come Sony don't make a PVR with a HD tuner? Does that mean if you record a TV show playing on a HD channel on your hdtv's tuner, the Sony PVR will only record it in SD? If that's the case, will the TV show look okay being played back to the full HD hdtv?
diesel Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 (edited) Sony had a couple of HD PVRs out previouisly which were a rebadged Zinwell and they had issues. These units are rebadged Pioneer products. They will be able to records HD channels from your TV's HD tuner (downscaled to analogue SD quality) if your TV allows this. The PQ is fine, certainly better than analogue FTA but probably slightly worse than SD FTA. It's not a bad solution, but for the most part you will find the same shows on HD channels will be simulcast on SD channels as well, so you can use the SD tuner in the Sony. Better option is a twin tuner HD PVR like Toppy, Beyonwiz or TiVo, or Panasonic DMR-XW300 (not necessarily in that order) Edited December 24, 2008 by diesel

If I ended up with a sony hdtv then I would probably buy the Beyonwiz too. It would have been nice to stick with the same brand PVR though, reason being for single remote control usage but i understand that most good quality PVRs can control several brands of hdtv these days.

Cons: Won't play video from USB and no on screen progress bar or time ticker when dubbing. Edited March 21, 2010 by I.T. Manager
