petetherock Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 I just went through your website A wonderful masterpiece! Thank you for answering many of my queries. Sadly I still await the wide release of soft and hardware. BTW I am headed to USA via HKG for a conference, can anyone give some tips on places / items worthy of carrying back? Also do you reckon a SD DVD region code hack will be available if I bite the bulet and get a Toshi in USA? momaw,Ive finally completed the buyers guide !!! http://www.hd-world.net/Buyerguide.html
rosco99 Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 momaw,Ive finally completed the buyers guide !!! Do you have any info on HD drives that can be incorporated in to a HTPC?
AndrewW Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Do you have any info on HD drives that can be incorporated in to a HTPC? No reason why you can't use the xobx 360 addon drive, and it's a bargain to boot at < $250. I did see an article somewhere about an internal HD DVD drive for a PC, but cost somewhere up around $1K Andrew.
T800 Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 BTW I am headed to USA via HKG for a conference, can anyone give some tips on places / items worthy of carrying back? Also do you reckon a SD DVD region code hack will be available if I bite the bulet and get a Toshi in USA? If you can get a hd dvd player, then why not get one cheap,as hd dvd are region free. as for your second question, there will never be a region code hack for the US players as they dont support PAL for sd dvd.
Sparrow Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Am currently considering a budget way to get into HD DVD and it seems that the most logical way for me is to purchase add on HD DVD for our X Box360 ??? We have a 32"LCD native resolution is 1366x768 & also a Sanyo Z2 projector which is 720p native .... so my question is .... will the picture quality be that much better going the HD DVD route rather than the upscaling Samsung DVD player we currently use ??? Have seen the add on HD DVD package for as low as $200AUD ..... which seems a BARGAIN to get into hi resolution ??? We live in the country so we can't access HD TV .... and even satellite & pay TV is only std resolution ..... so the ONLY way it seems we can get MAYBE better quality ... is to go this way. I can't see the point of buying stand alone player capable of 1080p as we have NO displays capable of getting near that resolution due to their lower "native" resolution ??? don't think I'll be purchasing new 1080p capable projector or TV in the near future ... so what I need to know is if I am really going to see any difference going the X Box360 add on route ??? Anyone else been down this route ???
AndrewW Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Anyone else been down this route ??? Yep. My AE900 is only a 720p native panel and the difference between SD and HD DVD is night and day. On the 32" LCD in my bedroom the difference is noticeable, but not as much as on the projector. If it was only the tele you had, I'd say its 50:50 whether it's worth it, but considering the projector and assuming you already own the 360, then I say go for it, it's only $200 and you can always sell it if you decide the improvement isn't worth it. Andrew.
MeWhoElse Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Correct required Dazbug... First to be semantic, ALL HDDVD players can play the "new" codecs, namely DD+ and TrueHD (core only DTS HD/MA still) as well ofcourse as reading PCM. The HD-E1 requires PCM output thru the HDMI port for the audio in it's uncompressed for. The Xbox Addon will also decode these codecs, with the exception of being recompressed to DD/DTS/WMAPro DD @640Kbps DTS @1.5Mbps WMAPro @ 1.5Mbps (most Pioneers receivers for example can take this stream) I also believe now the Panasonic can play back DD+ and TrueHD, and DTS-HD (not MA still) Plus I would not state "uncompressed" PCM... as dithering from 24bit to 16bit is a form of compression, perhaps best to just state support for reading PCM. The LD BH100 does NOT play DTS-HD MA only DTS-HD. Also Blu-ray TrueHD 6channel (5.1) HD DVD 2channel. Also worth mentioning the Xbox with HD DVD Addon allows 24P.

Hi MeWhoElse; Uncompressed pcm sure is a misnomer when its sampled at 16/48 .The ld bh100 is a bit of a dogs breakfast when it comes to decoding the new codecs. It wont decode dts hdma as pcm over hdmi ;but it will decode hr and ma and output it over the 5.1 analog outs.[according to a review by doc dvd at avs forums]. It will decode all the new codecs except dolby true hd for output over the analog multi's.It downrezes true hd/dts hd/dd+ to core only over hdmi ;either that or 2 ch pcm.So if anyone wants to hear a fox dts hd ma track -the LG is the only way at present

(then DTS->PCM) NO player currently decodes DTS-HD MA! TrueHD/DD+ has no "core", yet since it is not a "required" codec for Blu-ray, it must have a DD or as such stream as well. BTW, 2channel PCM is only whilst over SPDIF connection you mention I assume. There is also talk that it does not decode DTS-HD HR either! Unverified for my liking.

Yes MWE ;It decodes dts hdma as pcm over hdmi.It decodes dd+ as 2 ch pcm or 2ch dd legacy as a bitstream.Over the 5.1 analog this all changes. It DOES have a dts hd ma decoder which sends 5.1 full core + extension packet. Its specs include a dts hd decoder which dts.com says is sufficient for dts hr and ma.A few people at avs have tested it with various discs like casino royal and fox ma discs and all they need is a dolby true hd upgrade and all the new codecs will be available on analog Doc dvd's review is posted as a sticky [ he is a ISF calibrator and thx level 2 trained-so knows what he's talking about]-its also edited by Mark Rubin-which speaks to its veracity imo ps to quote Roger Dressler; 'included within 7.1 multichannel dd+ and truehd streams is a core 5.1 mix prepared by the content maker that is used when the player is set for 5.1 mode.Thats the clever thing about dd+/tue hd;with a core sp/dif can be accomodated too

redmosquito Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 Hi anyone have any recommendations on where to pick up an XE1? or have i missed the boat and should wait for the next shipment? Im located in Sydney
Souwalker Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Hi This maybe a dumb question and I don't seem to find this in this thread. Does the HD dvd or blu ray players playback dvds? No sweat if it doesn't. Thanks pat

No sweat if it doesn't. Thanks pat hey dere, yes they do play back DVD's. In fact most of them include quite good (and some extremely good) upscalers so you will get a better picture out of your old DVD's than you do on your current DVD player (assuming it doesn't upscale). Just be careful, the first gen sony and pioneer blu-ray players in the US could not play music cd's,. Good question.
Souwalker Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 Thanks I'm not worreid about CDs. I also use a dedicated cd player. Pat

Come on, this is next gen and they take away one of the handiest features of last gen. Ok rant over. I my HD.
