Warranties for TVs do not generally cover power surge damage.

I was looking to buy a power board with surge protection for my new HD TV and price range is from $20 - $300. I couldn’t find much information on difference between the cheap and expensive boards.

Could anyone provide some info on surge protection and price – quality relationship?

Thanks

Alan

Well don't take it as gospel but I went to get a surge protection board from Jaycar. From what i could tell it offered no more protection than a modern curcuit breaker in most fuse boxes - the salesman agreed which was very refreshing.

I had an portable isolatrol unit a few years back. Plug into wall, then plug appliances into it. Without a doubt it was the best filter I've ever seen. Nothing got past it at all. Even hideous levels of hash and spikes were reduced to a slight blip by it. The load was DC isolated from the mains too (of course, ground was continous), which helped nicely once in a remote location where there was DC on the mains that was causing grief with some light AC motors.

Unfortunately a pole transformer detontated (best word for it) across the road from me a few years ago and blew the arse out of the isolatrol, but everything that was plugged into it survived and is working to this day.

Hi Mr_Independent, Dick Smith Powerhouse are charging a premium for these.

I can do the PureAV Series 8-Way Isolator (3m Cord) + TEL + AV + F-TYPE + $UNLIMITED Warranty (Part # F9G823au3M) for $240 including airfreight to anywhere in Australia if anyone is interested. Cheers, Jamie.

Thanks for the info.

My insurance does not cover damage by power surge unless caused by a defined event at the property address. I guess ther has to be a lightning strike to get any power surge coverage.

I think I'll go for one of the Belkin boards. They provide insurance.

I think you might be able to do even better than that...

I'm not sure if they're the same models that you're talking about, but these are definitely a lot cheaper than DSE and Jaycar.

I'm thinking of buying Surge Shield's A2 power board:

http://www.surgeshield.com.au/a2.htm

Have any forum members used this product?

Positive reviews of the A2 can be found at:

A number of online computer stores sell Surge Shield's A1 powerboard. The A1 is identical to the A2 except for one difference: the A1 has an input socket for a telephone cable and the A2 has an input socket for a TV antenna cable. The cheapest price that I have found for the A1 is $130 (plus postage):

Do they work ?? Dunno....But most of the half-decent ones come with a really good warranty (6 years - life) AND give you lots of DOLLARS protection for your HT equiptment.

I consider it lifetime insurance for $25,000 goodies for a once-off payment of $200. Sounds OK to me .....

I've ordered the a heap of goodies, and am preparing for their arrival and will probably buy a half-decent protector AND a UPD.....

As the STB I have ordered is one of the new (fewer-bugs) Toshibas, I plan to plug the power-board into the mains, the screen / receiver etc into that and also the UPS into that and run the Toshiba STB from the UPS as it appears as though it doesn't like power fluctations too much ....

Got a Dick-Smiff catalogue today, they have cheapie UPS for ...Umm...I think it was $99.

Any thoughts ???

I feel like i have taken away from the original poster on this topic with what i said and all the responses I got

I appreciate all of the help though...

I am not quite ready to purchase one just yet, but I will be over the next month or so.

By the way I never pay retail and the price I quoted is indicitive, I am well aware of the mark-ups on these types of things cause I used to work in retail.

However, I have noted all the suggestions and will keep it all in mind though.

Thanks again :P

Despite the price, do these things have anything more than a few (albeit high joule) MOVs (and lots of connectors)?

If they dont, maybe Santa Industries® should start whipping up a few models...

Hmmm......

The more expensive ones do have coils and capacitators and many other wonderful things [ in one case, as many as 38 seperate components to dynamically track your power (Does my power need dynamically tracking and does that 38 components include the "unique identity tags :P ) ] in them, but I agree with your cynicism questioning their value.

Like I said before, the main reason I'm getting one (hey Mal, where from??? :P ) is because of the life-time guarantee for lightning strike damage....

Any thoughts on this...Anyone ???

Yeah, wrt the lifetime guarantee, I never go near these, but maybe you'd get lucky with a decent outfit! (Usually these are for advertising purposes only, once you read the find print, you find that things become more murky...even to the point of that ol' favourite "we agree to repair or replace the surge protector - anything else, and we'll see you in court!" ).

Hard to tell what the Belkins contain, maybe some active components.

However, if its just a few MOVS, a couple of induction coils and the odd cap, then I'd probably rather build it myself*.

*In fact, I'd love it if your average a/v equipment (STBs, etc) came with the option of no power supply! :P Then I could rig up a nice high-efficiency, screened, regulated, surge-protected, supply of my own design, supplying all of the devices, and be 120% sure of the stability of the voltages, lack of noise, etc... Of course, Santa - you're dreamin'!

Hi Austen,

These boards had a big rap from Club Rotel so I bought one (an A1). They give you peace of mind with your equipment, I can't fault them.

$165 good price!!

I hope you reside in Melbourne...

Where from may I ask?

Yes I reside in Melbourne. Found a business on the net in QLD (I think) that has them for $165, just printed out the page, and Dick Smith Powerhouse at Highpoint were happy to price match, even though they had them priced at $299. I got the last one there tonight.

Besides being a good powersurge, the board also conditions and filters the power, including providing protection for the antenna .... I had some interference with my DVD player .... didn't know from what... I assumed it was the dozens of metres of cabling behind my entertainment centre.... hooked up the board... any interference I had went away .... noticeable difference on my amp also ....

If you're only looking for power surge protection, there are cheaper alternatives around the $80 mark... but if you're also looking at conditioning and filtering ... this product is a great bag for the buck .... I'm thinking of buying a second one!

Cheers,

Marcelo
