Why aren't you using it?

I could help by looking after it here.

I would like to have the MXO to do subwoofer integration properly. Wilson Audio have just released an analog crossover which might be more affordable than MXO. I reached out to the Wilson distributor but haven't heard back. That happens a lot here. It can be a struggle to get somebody in the HiFi business in Australia to sell me something. Leaves me no choice but to look elsewhere.

@brodricj obviously everyone has different experiences, but I have had the opposite experience to you when asking about HiFi products in (West) Australia or testing same. I purchased my Esoteric SACD player from @Douglas HiFi and am reviewing Accuphase with Frank Prowse HiFi. Equally, I have had no problem in talking with both Prowse and the Sydney based retailer/distributor of Wilson all in a timely manner. I admit I am asking them about different products to you but nevertheless I found all of them generally helpful and approachable! No idea on relative pricing with elsewhere but I've always been happy enough with Australian support. Rob

Perhaps you want to conduct business on "your terms" and this isn't acceptable to the other party. I find relationships work best when it's a two-way street, not when one dictates to the other party.

I found this a very interesting read:-

Great article. I learned from my mistakes with at least two of the high-end electronic components. I promised myself not to repeat those errors, simply for the peace of mind.

Having said that, one can only wish that the profit margin were more reasonable and that post-customer service remains attentive when items go pear-shaped.

Have to admit then when I purchase my products I do so on the strict understanding with the retailer that in the event of things going wrong that I receive excellence in support. This, to me at least, is as important as the initial purchase and to date I believe this has been reciprocated by the retailer. Rob

This boils down to a good, mutually beneficial relationship. A relationship that needs to be built from a successful initial transaction. Window shopping or tyre kickers, of course, have no productive ground to stand on.

Very well said. Rob

My terms is easy. Just reply to my email. That doesn't happen.

I'm keen to hear how you're progressing with the Telos acquisition, Brodric. How's it going?

  • Author

Lately, I've been avidly collecting records from the Salvo, often grabbing rare finds for just $1.00 to $7.00. One standout was a record pressed in Holland in 1984. Interestingly, the original pressings seem to offer a richer, more authentic sound that really transports you.

I have finally completed the room mode analysis. How many of you actually reach this extent? It is valuable to identify the frequencies that are missing due to standing waves.

I've told the dealer I have decided on Telos however I can't place an order until I sell my surplus stuff (which are listed in the SNA classifieds)

Always great to have an old mate come round!

IMG_1001.jpeg

Sorry for the long write up here, but I really want to try to capture my experience. The first part is the preamble which you can miss if you want. The second part is the experience summed up.

Preamble

Well, we are a strange bunch aren’t we us Audiophiles Well, I know I’m a little different for sure.

I wasn’t quite sure how to write this, but then I thought of the analogy of going around somebody’s house to watch a movie, we don’t go round and comment on the quality of the picture discuss whether the blacks are good or the depth is good. Or if the couch is comfy. We generally watch the movie and either enjoy or don’t enjoy the film.

We might say if we like the picture, but we certainly wouldn’t go into evaluating it at depth.

Its actually about the movie, not about the vehicle that delivers the movie.

And that’s how I approached this wonderful listening experience, I wanted to pay attention to the content that was delivered by this magnificent, expensive Hi Fi system.

I suppose I could get into superlatives about what it does and what it doesn’t do and compare it to what my own system does or doesn’t do and say which I prefer and why I prefer it, but I think that would be to miss the point.

After all, the only person that has to love this system is Chanh (oh and I did love it)

This is a summary of my listening experience.

The room and the environment is top class. I found myself and you could easily find yourself losing hours in this room. There is the right amount of minimal lighting to set the ambiance and a very comfortable chair to relax in, oh, and plenty of wine if you want to partake.

It takes a few moments to readjust when you finally walk outside and realize it’s still daylight, in some ways. It reminded me of my younger days when I would go to a nightclub enter at night time and leave first thing in the morning when the sun was rising.

Chanh chose the music All I needed to do was sit and listen, and his choices were fabulous, enjoyable, showing off the strengths  of this great system. I left with a couple of gems to listen to on my own system and after all isn’t  that one of the great things about sharing this obsession.

This set up does some things I haven’t heard before, and really that’s what you want. I guess when you spend this amount of money.

It sends music and sounds all around the room, both sideways in front and behind Which had me turn my attention backwards and forwards a little bit like an eager tennis fan watching a long rally.

The clarity and depth of bass is astounding. There were notes in Queen Mary on about three occasions, that  I’ve never heard before they are so deep, I mean what happens to those notes on my system. Are they just erased because it knows the speakers can’t handle it, very odd.

I found myself being immersed in the music rather than evaluating it, and I couldn’t ask for much more than that.

As a track would finish, I found myself strangely enjoying the silence, as if my brain was happy, relaxing in what it had just heard.

It has always been something. I’ve said, a really good system adds an unquestionable quality to the silent parts. The midrange of a silent part can be a wonderful thing if it’s done right.

It’s been a few years since I heard the system last, but I feel there is a better synergy now between all components. Of course the caveat is my memory  is shocking

I found myself so involved in the listening experience, I often didn’t even realize Chanh was there and I certainly didn’t know he snuck a picture which I normally charge for.

They talk about the law of diminishing return, which I’m not sure I fully agree with.  How do you even evaluate such a thing? The step up in class and quality here it’s huge.

Anyway, thanks to Chanh for being successful enough and crazy enough to spend this amount of money on a Hi Fi system and gracious enough to invite me along to listen it’s very much appreciated.

Thanks for dropping by yesterday, Russell. It's always a fantastic time with plenty of constructive discussion about a passion we share. Great to see you in good shape and spirits despite the extreme Arctic conditions from Toronto. It was a pleasure, and I was a bit disappointed that you didn’t accept my lovely white cemented grape juice offer, which I was enjoying alone. I suppose the purified water from Coles was really needed to properly observe the setup after a few years away.

For the audience's information, I used a seasoned, trained ear during this rare opportunity, when I put Russ in the listening chair to compare QBuz online streaming versus local storage via the NAS, followed by local storage feeding versus my Accuphase SACD transport for the identical track SACD, and finally the Turntable with 33.33 vs 45 rpm.

It was great to see Russ in the listening chair for a continuous three-hour session, non-stop, with no toilet break. That really says something. It seemed to be nothing more than a brief moment of auditory pleasure.

Have a safe trip back to the minus temperatures in a few weeks, Russell. Hopefully, when you return, things will elevate to another level or two.

I am an open-minded individual. Where limitations are only obstacles to our ambition.

And you want to borrow my Telos before I've even bought it LOL!

I need to sort out whether ethernet or SFP for my N1T. Perhaps I could borrow your Waversa? I was playing random songs with my Kaleidescape M300 last night and I must say 44.1/16 was sounding sensational. This D1XSE has really matured in sonic character as the hours are building up. I might devote some effort in that direction. The Waversa would be an obvious first step. Once done that would just leave the digital cable upgrade from an Alpha v2 to Sigma V2 or Omega. But these ideas are getting a bit silly when the tweaks and cables are each worth more than the player.

Absolutely a delight from my end. When do you need it? You can pick it up tonight if that suits you.

I only have enough diesel in the tank for a one way trip....I'd have to bring my sleeping bag and camp in your music room until Centrelink pay day LOL!

Well done Chanh , the wonders of room influence and to scientifically analyse makes perfect sense.

Was dreaming about your future listening room concepts , may they could take influence of some ancient structural designs said to allow perfect sound along the lines of :

Chavín de Huántar, Peru

Location: Archaeological site in the Andes mountains of Peru.

Features: A network of tunnels and a temple with acoustic features.

Acoustics: Designed with air ducts and acoustic waveguides that specifically amplify the sound of conch shell instruments (putus) to a 300-hertz frequency.

Purpose: The amplified sound was likely projected to worshippers in a plaza, suggesting a deliberate and complex acoustic design for ritual purposes

Or one of another 5 wonders :

The Barabar Caves in India are a prime example of ancient man-made caves with perfect sound, featuring incredibly polished, flat granite walls that create pronounced echoes and reverberations. Similar sites include the caves at Chavín de Huántar in Peru, which were designed with acoustic properties to amplify specific tones from ritualistic instruments. The caves were likely used for religious rituals, meditation, and chanting, taking advantage of their unique acoustic properties for spiritual purposes.

Just a thought when perfection is of highest priority...
