They look very nice!

However, as you said yourself, probably not as fancy as those eBay ones.

That's not to take anything away from your work. It's just a lot of hard work achieving a good looking piece of audio gear.

Probably why those eBay ones are costly.

I'd love to claim credit, but I can't. I was lucky enough to pick this up from @Hensa I believe the plinth was made in Germany, by an enthusiastic amateur. However, it shows what can be done.

true..... as the OP asked if they are worth the money to spend that much on getting one of them...

to my novice ears... i could not hear an obvious "improvement" between the stock plinth to my DIY plinth... and even a premade plinth i picked up for my 145 before I tried DIY... So guess it is just more form over function :D

Unfortunately I can't afford one, so I just have to rebirth cheaper Thorens I can find locally :D

I love the one with the black top.

I've pimped quite a few turntables and the upgrades I have made to them were improvements and not just mere cosmetic bling.  The plinths on the expensive ebay Thorens are in fact just glammed up MDF, and would offer very little sonic value compared to the flimsy original plinths.

Thanks... but pity I could only find a cheap 166 cover...

but I did a whacky idea to solve my TT accessory storage... not conventional, but handy to keep my area clear of small stuff

Hi Jo

The idea of constructing a new plinth is to improve the sonic performance of the turntable.  The storage area with drawers, and filled with sundry items, will negatively impact on the turntable.

I too have lusted after the ones available through ebay , from Germany but now I know they are made out of MDF with a wood veneer, I wounder if they would look as good in real life.

The amount of solid hard wood needed  would not be that expensive  and would archive a far better result.

Unless you are going to the length that @okitoki  has gone to ;)  it is basically  just four butt or miter joints and a local picture framer could probably oblige with this . Plus the satisfaction of DIY would be much grater.

I suggest u go over to the Vinyl Engine forum & ask the question about the German rebuilds.  You are bound to get experienced responses there.

Report back here if you do find out. Even if I never buy one I'm interested in knowing

Thanks for all the great feedback to dateSo... Talk about complete change in direction. Reading the posts about the after market arms had me looking at what else was about and I stumbled across a technics SL-120 sporting an SME 3009 series ll improved arm and a shure V-15 type lll cartridge. Based on the reviews of this combo I grabbed it. I've even got the original box the cartridge came in with the various tools and different length bolts

Although very looked after it was in a bit of a state as the previous owner (purchased it new in 1975) was a smoker so I've spent a day getting the nicotine off.

I've got a friend going to give me a hand checking it over and setting it up and then see how it feels to live with for a while safe in the knowledge that if I do decide to grab a td xxx turntable I have the arm and cartridge to go with it!

This is a massive step up from the Yamaha YP-2B I've been running and will buy me time to decide what to do next. The technics for me isn't the best looking pice of equipment I could have in the house and that will probably necessitate a change at some point, but I've learned I probably don't need to spend the money the German company is charging for something as gorgeous (I'm looking at you @hensa @markm1111 )and have an idea In my head that I could get someone in Aus to do a build for me as and when a doner table comes available

I'll be running the technics through a MF VPS II phono pre amp in to my Sugden Signature 41 series pre and power amp driving a set of Krix Neuphonics. Any advice on this TT is greatly appreciated.

There are alot of covers and stickers you can get for the 1200... but not for other models.

I was looking for something similar for my previous 1300 and but came up empty.

The 120 is effectively a mk 1 1200
