I did some research and the consensus was that there is no issue and some even prefer the sound aes/ebu cables produces. It is true not to use XLR as aes/ebu, 75 vs 110 ohm. Classic example is the Van den Hul The Integration Hybrid XLR cable, sold as a pair of interconnect, and has an impedance of 110 Ohm (in balanced star quad mode); Allows AES-EBU standard digital audio transmission.

I'd notice you connected the right speaker cable with the red to negative and black to positive phase, was this in error?
