For under $2k you could pick up these, which are fantastic for the money: http://www.listeningpost.co.nz/Second-Hand/diamond-dancer-usher-__I.57443__N.25869__C.15001 They take a lot of driving though, so you'd need 150+ watts of quality power to go with them. how does the paradigm reference range compare with these? are they better? (ignoring the price range difference if any) I am thinking of upgrading my centre speaker the impotent wharfedale diamond 9.cm to say a paradigm cc570
  9. Looking to buy ... new or used
  10. $480 shipped As new, in original box, latest version
  11. yup ... rated flat frequency response down to 16Hz but tests show pretty good results down to 6Hz ... i'm on a mission to hunt down sub bass tones in my music collection. so far I've got - sk8er boi - something in the water - uninvited
  12. hi as a summary of my solution that worked for me 1) all your suggestions of moving the speakers away from the wall corner - it is now around 30cm from the side wall and over 40cm from the back wall 2) I bought an HSU ULS 15 sub and use it for the flat bass all the way down 3) I put some faith and trust into denon's audyssey it now sounds pretty close to amazing. everything is nearly balanced. there is clarity now. the midrange is no longer shouty. the bass is creamy smooth. soundstage is like a decent live semi open hall. the balance the speed of my system and the detail and the separation will never get near the 10k+ systems but hey I might reserve that for my next headphone. thanks.
  13. Thank nakmad. In your experience do you think the denon 4308 would be enough to drive the 9.6? (I actually bought a 9.5 pair but got a good deal with the 9.6 thinking it would be superior but had not been able to handle the piercing midrange dome. Then stupidly changed the 9.cs to 9.cm and that had pained my waf coz it will not fit in Any ht shelf! Hence I thought if I could swap everything to the evo shelves at no loss ...)
  14. I am trying to get the 4308 guy to agree to shipping. He doesn't want to ship at the moment. So you are saying that I don't need a poweramp, just a higher end receiver would be ok. I have trawled the net looking for frequency response curve for the 9.6 but found none. The 9.5 has a bump in the bass range. Anyway I will follow the advise of better receiver 2nd hand and I have bought a sub and stay away from the temptation of the evo2 8.
  15. I was asking because I saw some evo2 8s for sale and they look darn nice! If I get proper amping (ie buy a receiver with preamp out and connect to poweramp) but play the 9.6 soft to medium loudness will it improve the sound? I get the impression my 9.6 need to be fed power ie played loud?
  16. So those ushers are much superior to the opus on listening post? Sorry my understanding of speakers are limited! Also WAF is important
  17. Thanks will look into that pair ... I've listened to theophany but nota proper audition coz it was in Harvey Norman. What do you think of those? Also are thesonus faber cremona bookshelves as good as the cremona m? I am thinking of moving to bookshelves and matching centre available. Are bookshelves always inferior to floor standing ones of the same series?
  18. Hi Firstly I don't havea lot of experience auditioning. I've only properly auditioned sonus faber cremona m and thought that was heaven. I think my Diamond 9.6 has a lot more midrange than I'd like Thanks to the signature midrange dome - why wharfedale why! Anyway ... Are the evo 2 8 and 40 a big improvement or not much or what do people recommend for under 2k? Assuming I have all the amps sorted which I haven't at this stage. Just planning my future move. Thanks
  19. my wharfedales are 6ohms. all the denon amps rate 8ohms with THD 0.05% while the 6ohm rates always with 0.7%THD
  20. bcos people in avsforum talk a lot about dual subs giving more consistent bass blanket over the room and nowadays even quad subs! I am wondering - is the circuitry in the 4308 any superior to the lower end ones? bcos if mine is rated 90W 20-20kHz 0.05% THD and the 4308 is rated 140W 20-20kHz 0.05% THD ... that is like an increase of at most 3dB (increase in 3dB doubles with wattage requirement) ... if the circuitry is the same then I don't need the 4308 for the power, more like the features
  21. will a denon 4308 be a must better amp than mine? one issue I can see is it only has one sub out ... will that be a limiting factor for future speaker upgrades?
  22. plug HDMI of whatever you want to watch into tv and send coax/spdif to the amp
  23. any change/swapping around always gives you a thrill even if it ends up sounding less good ... you then swap it back and be amazed! or ... trawl trademe good luck!
