  1. http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/home-audio/other/auction-442817269.htm I have put this up on trademe, as I have upgraded. Feel free to take a look. Thanks.
  2. I actually spent quite a bit of time setting mine up after reading, and according to the principles in Get Better Sound. I found it was flexible, and more trial and error than any hard and fast rules, which of course will never suit everybody. I love the way they are set up now. I'm stuck in a bedroom so space, and placement options were at a minimum, but the result is great.
  3. Mine's on the way- Thanks Chrispy, I'd been thinking about this book recently but the sale sealed the deal. got tinnitus;123329 wrote: I'm writing my own book!! Really? That's very cool. I'm assuming it's hi-fi related...
  4. Actually, according to Statistics NZ "audio-visual equipment prices (down 7.6 percent), which also fell by a similar amount last quarter." (http://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/economic_indicators/CPI_inflation/ConsumersPriceIndex_MRMar10qtr.aspx) So some would say now is the time to buy. I imagine the pick up in the Hi-Fi retail industry would be slower than general, so prices should stay down a little while.
  5. Audio Research use class T (just an implementation of D) in some of their amplifiers, I've heard good things about them, nonetheless its slow to be picked up amongst purists.
  6. I can't possibly understand why a recording company would send raw recordings to all of the different pressing plants to be mastered. Surely mastering would be done at source, purely for cost saving policy.
  7. It could be an idea to get an electronically savvy friend to look at your amp and see if the pre and power are separate, and then patch your own connection through.
  8. That's really interesting. I've never been a fan of the statement saying cable burn in makes a difference, mainly due to the fact that there was no scientific basis (YET) and I feelthat most people listening a few hours a night, a few times a week, would have absolutely no memory of such subtle changes. Please keep me informed, and I'd be more than happy to take part in any future tests!
  9. A stable power amplifier, for a reasonable price. Proving difficult...
  10. I have different length cables, but the total adds up to less than 5m so it's not large. I haven't tried similar lengths, although, I am curious. It's never bothered me that they've been different.
  11. There was no offense taken here, I'm finding it quite healthy so far. A good system in some American states (I've heard) is an online ticket resale organization, set up by the companies who are putting on the event. That way profits can be managed, and the event gets a good cut.
  12. Yea okay a bit of a cliche economic statement. But I mean the happiness of the two, outweighs the disappointment of the one. And it wouldn't be as good if scalping was illegal. Anyone want to back me up? Anyone?

What if you had to go into work on the day they were selling tickets you wanted, so you paid a mate to stand in line for you to get a ticket? Acceptable? I think it is! What if you paid a stranger who was already in the line? Yea pretty much. What if a stranger in the line anticipated you'd want some, bought a few spare, and put them on trademe. Where is the line to cross? Arg I'm scared of the backlash. Be gentle. sirAndy;104105 wrote: Balls Clever ones. It's good logic. Oversimplified, but decent.
  14. Now from some 'capitalist running dog' theory ouch Consider this example FAN A - Scalper FAN B - Misses out FAN C - buys of a scalper The scalper get up at 6:00am to wait in line, get a few tickets spare and sells them later on. Fan B gets up at 10:00 has a small wait, but the tickets were sold out. Fan C is a very good baker, gets up at 2:00 to bake, but can't wait in line because he'll lose his job. The scalper then sells the ticket to the baker, for a healthy profit. The scalper is happy, he made some money. The baker is happy he got a ticket, kept his job, and earnt money baking. Fan B is not happy, he lost a ticket BUT he did not want his ticket as much. He was not willing to get up very early, or to pay the scalper, so he misses out. The scalper and the baker wanted the ticket much more, and the got the tickets. If scalping was illegal, fan B would get a ticket and be happy, but fan A and C would not be. THUS by scalping, the scarce resource is efficiently allocated to those who want it more, and the overall hapiness of society is maximised. Again, still not a great fan of scalping because I do believe event organisers try to keep prices down to help fans, but you've got to admit, that was a pretty good runng dog explanation. From a purely economic standpoint, scalping IS efficient. *please excuse the spelling errors*
  15. Okay, first off, I'm not a great fan of scalpers either, and I don't think HI-fi stores have massive margins, they'll have just the same as other simmilar shops. I just want to put the veiw out there. Ok, bad example, but: A hi-fi shop buys goods from source, or distributer, and then puts on a margin, so that you can get the goods more conveniently. You pay extra money for the service, and convenience. Saves you the trouble from importing it or whatever. Good example - A dairy can buy goods from the supermarket, and put on a margin. No-body complains about this, because there are usually more goods at the supermarket, BUT people still buy these more expensive goods, because they are willing to pay extra for the good, to save in time and or petrol. So if people are willing to pay extra for tickets why stop them. The problem seams that it is scalpers making money from nothing, but they arn't. They get paid for waiting in line, and getting the ticket to someone more conveniently.
  16. Heh, we had a look at this in economics. Scalpers increase economic efficiency in the market, and make everyone better off. What's the difference between a scalper and a hi-fi shop who puts on massive margins? (just trying to give another view point, don't hate me, hate the veiw)
  17. This one you may be interested in. I'll PM more details but I couldn't attach the image that way. Attached files
  18. People add to the watchlist because they want to see the auction fail and try to get a bargain I find it more perplexing that the people who ask all the questions are never the ones who bid let alone win.
  19. Company is a good point. I find it very relaxing and enjoyable with someone who is interested in audio, and can listen to a long classical/jazz piece. On the other hand, when I'm just showing my system to a friend who is not interested in audio, even three minute 'normal' songs can feel too long, and I feel obliged to keep it interesting, so I'm not relaxed or enjoying the music.
  20. My favourite is late at night, in the dark. That way there are no visual/aural distractions
  21. Forget about it, happens all the time here eh. Actually I was quite interested to read that, I've often thought about delving into vinyl but obviously its going to be way too expensive to get what I want, plus CDs are just so convenient. T110 it's basically just testing where you don't know which component you're listening to, which you are probably aware of. It's supposed to remove bias of your sight on your hearing. For example, huge speakers might sound more powerful than they really are at first impression. Its a medicinal approach to audio. Works well for testing new medicine, but does it work well for audio?
  22. Antipodes, that was a REALLY good take on it, I think I'll remember for future. Thanks. Out of curiosity, have you done this DBT method using fresh cable and then ones you've burnt in? Was it easy to pick the difference?
  23. Scalping is perfectly legal in NZ... yet(wait for rugby world cup). I'm not sure of the forums official position on it, but ask any economist and they love it, after all its just suppliers satisfying demands.
