  1. It's already a drop ceiling, so was hoping the just replacing the tiles would be not incredibly expensive, but from this thread and hunting around elsewhere, it seems like they may be surprisingly unaffordable!
  2. It's white - reflects light around the room, lowering contrast. I am nowhere near 709er's level of skill and commitment to do a ceiling like that! Plus the ceiling is about 6.5*12m, so it would be kind of a big job . Danny
  3. Hi folks, Anyone got any experience with ceiling tiles (for a drop ceiling) suitable for an HT? Got most of the rest of the theatre sorted out, now looking to fix the white ceiling. Something matte black and with good sound insulation would be good, but I guess could be damn expensive if they exist! Cheers, Danny
  4. Quick update - have given this system a couple of quick test runs (running off a yammie RX-V3075) while working on getting the HT set up properly, and I am pretty delighted. It's been at least 5 years since my ears got out of practice at picking sounds apart, so I'm not an amazing judge of a system, but it sounds very, very good to me!
  5. Power on the side here2rock, with all the other ports. Ports on the side are fine for me. I have plugged mine in and projected onto about 150" of white wall while I wait for a screen to arrive. Pretty happy so far (but I haven't really spent much time looking at a modern HT projector, so my opinion isn't really all that informed)! Danny
  6. Damn, that's a bit above my budget, but it's kind of tempting at that bargain price!
  7. DaytonaMan, no, no lens memory on the Sonys I believe. One factor in favour of the Sony is reported lower fan noise and similar design/build quality things over the Epson (and reduced screen door effect which is important for me, seeing as I'm hoping to end up with a big screen). Not that the Epson is a bad choice! Sure wish the JVC X500 was a bit cheaper, it should be a *very* nice PJ... Danny
  8. Any chance you could share your supplier of a 55ES yorac? I am trying to track down a price on one at the moment...
  9. Noticed that projectorreviews.com has a HT focused review up of the 6900 up: http://www.projectorreviews.com/epson/epson-pro-cinema-g6900-wu-home-theater-projector/ Probably still a bit beyond my budget and the black levels aren't ideal, but a nice projector none the less, would love to see someone put up a monster screen in a family room with it! Cheers, Danny
  10. Eventually got upsold again to a DC-X35cc instead of the DC-6. Hopefully it matches the DC-7s OK, should be a nice system!
  11. Look forward to hearing what you think! I'm thinking about that unit, but possible rainbows and contrast level issues concern me .
  12. Very interested to hear what you think of the SH940 if you can get your hands on one Matt!
  13. Just a quick update - the guys at VAF got back in touch with me to say they'd found some extra DC-7s at the run out price (great customer service!), so I have gone with 4 x DC-7s, 1 x DC-6, and got upsold to an MPB SW19 (at what I think is an excellent package price!). Went past my budget by a little and my speaker/sub price ratio is probably a bit out, but will also end up with rather more bass and snazzier looking subs than I was expecting, so I'm happy. Cheers, Danny
  14. Thanks all. I am a bit torn, I might jump on some paradigms that eastwood hifi has on special at the moment so the whole conversation may be moot, but I'll see if I'm still leaning that way tomorrow!
  15. Thanks Teflon! Unfortunately it seems like Brisbane/SEQ stores aren't big on Australian speaker brands, for the most part (although I would be delighted if someone could correct me!). I already have a plan to go visit OzTS when time allows, so hopefully that will allow a listen to some Krixes (Krix? Krixs? Krixii?).
  16. I can probably stretch the total budget to about $5K for speakers and subs (I'd initially been thinking of less, but I think this level gives me a few good options), but of course less would be better . Sadly I think VAF has sold their old stock, missed out on some bargain DC-7s by a couple of weeks .
  17. Hi folks, I'm planning a new room and trying to figure out a 5.1/5.2 setup of speakers. Any suggestions (or opinions on the below) for good bookshelf or small floorstander options in the $1000-1500 range, preferably from Australian vendors? Obviously the cheaper the better! Already on my list: VAF i90 - out of the price range at full price, but with either the occasional special or 'free subs with a 5 speaker set' offer they are doable. Krix Acoustix Mk2 - haven't been able to find many reviews or impressions of these, but they can't be too bad! SVS Ultra bookshelves - not Australian, obviously, but otherwise seem bang on what I want, and Peter at Deep Hz seems able to do a respectable deal on a complete 5.2 setup. Adelaide Speakers - I really like the idea of the A5522SR in a non-Artisan case, as I have plenty of space for something a bit bigger like this... But again, not too many reviews or impressions of that unit around. Can anyone offer any thoughts here? Cheers, Danny
  18. That's an interesting one, I had no idea such a thing existed! Looks like an interesting product, particularly with some underlay to add some give underfoot. I will bear it in mind, but I suspect gluing lino down would make it harder than I want to get the wood underneath back in good condition.
  19. Only component purchased so far is a yammie RX-V3075, speakers TDB - I'm thinking VAF... Possibly an i90 based 5.2 setup unless I score a good price on a DC setup (although I wish they had slightly lower frequency response). I've used the same room before with another yamaha receiver (RX-V800 IIRC), Aaron speakers (2 * ATS-5, 2 * ATS-3, CC-240) and a yamaha sub which I don't recall the number of. Reverb was surprisingly OK, although the Aaron's aren't exactly the ultimate in high fidelity to begin with. This time around I have a bit more budget to play with, although a reasonable chunk of it will go on video. I do have plenty of wall space for acoustic treatments if I go down that path! Cheers, Danny
  20. Hi folks, I'm sllloooowwwwlly planning an HT in the front half of a squash court (can only start the build once some real estate stuff gets finalised), and am thinking about floor coverings. I could do carpet, but the room generates a lot of condensation on the walls, so it would get pretty wet over time. I'm considering rugs or carpet tiles - rugs can be kept away from the walls to avoid condensation and would be nice underfoot, but would be pretty expensive by the time I cover 50 square metres... Carpet tiles could run all the way to the wall and I can just replace the ones on the edge if the water turns out to be an issue. Anyone have experience with carpet tiles in an HT? Do they need to be glued down? Cheers, Danny
  21. Ahah! It hadn't registered with me that ozts was local. Brilliant! Rich, if you're out there, are you set up to audition speakers?
  22. Actually, any recommendations for AV dealers in Brisbane in general would be appreciated!
  23. Hi folks, I'll likely be buying a 5.1 system this year, and a low/middle end Krix system is an option. The only nearby non-Harvey Norman dealer from the Krix website seems to be an integrator... Anyone know of somewhere to listen to Krix gear in SE Qld? Danny
  24. Yeah, I am hoping they'll get some coverage due to the way Epson US is selling them. Having said that, I suspect my budget won't quite stretch this far (the G6550WUNL and a medium throw lens come out about $6K) and I will be headed down the Sony/Epson/JVC HT PJ path. Cheers, Danny
  25. Just to reply to my own topic... Epson AU came back to say that Epson US has just decided to release the existing models of the same name as HT projectors. So I'm now trying to chase down any info I can on the G6550WUNL to see just how bad the contrast is!
