  1. this (while mathematically different) is no worse than playing the pokies or lotto... some fools think they're gonna win loads on those too. In reality the service they're selling is 'hope'... and they provide that to people who play.
  2. there are so many of you... and so few responsible for anything noteworthy... and SOooo many more of you unable to program a VCR
  3. On big piles of cash. ... There's also too much of a deal being made between digital and analogue too for most purposes, IMO. If you're connecting your STB which sits right under your TV, then good quality component cables will produce a picture just as nice as an HDMI cable... the signal loss over that distance might be measurable with tools, but not with eyesight. Where HDMI really shines, is when you have a dozen devices connected to your HDMI compliant amp, which does the switching. Saves on masses of cables, and the longer runs coupled with potential for interference make digital a winner over analogue clearly. Bottom line, component really doesn't suck
  4. Just a small note... having read a lot about people mentioning sharpness... you should be reasonably careful when buying a unit which produces significantly sharper pictures than the average... because chances are that sharpness is being aritificially enhanced. The more an image is manipulated, either by upping the saturation to produce a more "attractive" colour picture in the store, or by upping sharpness to bleed more detail out of a picture which normally wouldn't have that detail... the more likely you are to experience colour clipping and/or enhanced artefacts. those adjustments made to the input signal are there to compensate for a poor reproduction. An STB shouldn't be doing this, it should feed the picture as it comes over the air, with no artificial enhancements to your television - where (as this is the role of the television) you can manipulate the picture sharpness/saturation/etc to your liking.
  5. without americans on it, it'll be boring as hell. "so, wait, let me get this straight, you didn't sleep with your mother or your sister... and you don't eat cars or make home movies of you burning your friend's genitalia?" "Umm... nope." BORING
  6. Crap, I had my PVR set to 1am in the afternoon.
  7. Does Nine have anything at all left?... If things keep going this way, they may have to introduce something innovative.... like an SD Loop for most of the day. Taking odds on a channel nine test pattern, ye olde SBS style.
  8. I think nine tried to keep people watching once the cricket finished, by putting on a feature film, instead of the extremely appropriately titled P&T show: "Bullshit"
  9. Hey, you've never seen me say Kath and Kim is ok... Most aussie content is worse trash than the NZ stuff. At least NZers are trying to be entertaining, which is why "we" don't hesitate to claim their work as our own. For the record, even the shorts of K&K that you can't help but see in passing make me want to deep-fry my head.
  10. My Bravia has a nice little feature to compensate. It has a +/- range for mpeg audio so you can make it louder or quieter. The TV does this on the fly whenever it is playing back mpeg content. I have mine set a fraction below zero, so as to shut it up a little. Its neat, but doesnt really help the audio out of the PVR into the amp. :/
  11. I think Proudly Australian refers to their lack of any half-decent US content. Now those low-budget NZ "dramas" will be tagged and claimed Proudly Australian.
  12. heh th 4:3 pan/scan made the SEXY in the back read like "SEX" most of the time... nothing wrong with that
  13. Agreed... It really is quite nice. I really hate when the source is super-grainy. This is outstanding, still warm, but super-sharp.
  14. Some people might find a blank screen if their STB isnt able to dynamically adjust. So it looks like it has been switched off. Worst case is these poor folks will have to rescan channels only to find "Seven HD Digital" turns into "Seven SD Digital"
  15. Sure, I'll bite... I'm sick and tired of both NZ'ers passing themselves or their products off as Australian to gain larger audiences, and Australia taking credit for personalities and successes which really belong to NZ. Sick of it. All this crossover both in military support, and now there being talk of joint Cricket and Rugby teams is just getting ridiculous. I don't have anything against New Zealand - Great people and perhaps one of the most natually beautiful countries in the world, but its just that... a different country. Some distinction needs to remain, until such time as NZers start paying taxes here, and we start paying taxes there, otherwise the whole point of supporting local content is lost. Local content means specifically that. Australians should be paying to support Australian struggling talent, and thereby re-investing in the Australian economy. Gotta hand it to her, though... the NZ PM is a bright spark. She's ugly enough to scare the paint off your car, but she's done well by her people. She's managed to trade her small market for a larger one. Kudos to her, and shame on us for letting it happen.
  16. I've begun to wonder, with networks only half-finishing shows, whether they have a stake in the DVD sales, LOL. Without a doubt, I've bought DVDs of shows I'd never have known about if the networks didn't put them on for a while, then axe them.
  17. yeah, it's a series... the right quality for the timeslot, though it does have Autumn Reeser in it, which is often worthwhile. The OP is quite right, Ten really is dragging out all the HD stuff, even late at night, which is awesome. the 4400 looked spectacular... and nice to see battlestar galactica back on.
  18. Interesting.... maybe a reception issue? I recorded it last night and am watching it now... its perfect.
  19. I doubt that had anything to do with the tag change. My DST-HD500 handled it perfectly well (as did my SVR-HD700). Also, you guys talking about HD Quotas etc are missing the mark. If the tennis is in SD originally, then the HD channel will be showing a deinterlaced version only, which wouldn't even qualify as HD content. Just like, say during That 70s Show. Given that they *do* switch the stream back later in the day when they're done with tennis to show their regular HD shows in faux HD, they would be still meeting their quota. Cheers.
  20. She could have lost her shower and her razor, and STILL be better than Ray.
  21. You guys are talking about the difference between commercialism and non-commercialism. you're pushing sh!t uphill to get commerical networks to de-brand. Its just not what they're all about.
  22. Well they're all from EMI... one phonecall fits all.
  23. You forgot to use the words Rort and Battler, lol
  24. That was a good ep too... psycho chicks are hot lol
