  1. Well yes and no... Obviously subliminal advertising relies on a concept called persistence of vision, which allows us to watch 25fps and consider it smooth motion. However, massive changes in colour, brightness or whatnot on the screen over even one frame are noticable if the viewer is watching (as opposed to checking for dirt between their toenails). What is much less noticable are changes to only PART of a frame, rather than the entire frame itself. For instance, rapid changes to the watermark. Imagine if the watermark transparency were being used to convey 1-frame messages. Do you think many would twig to that? I think perhaps only those of us stepping through the Ana Ivanovic vs Maria Sharapova match frame by frame with our *cough* in our hands would ever figure that one out Thank goodness the internet is covered with ... shall we say... meticulous viewers
  2. I'll check back here for the report. While its nice to know what's in HD and what isn't... I don't think I could put up with a minute of Michael J. McManus unless I were getting paid to do it.
  3. I also think its pretty slick the way Andrew slides in the extra trivia and makes it look like its something he 'just knows' - I mean they do some nice research, and despite his laugh, he's a pretty good host, and delivers it well.... without too many instances of the idiotic theatrics he often displays on Deal. I think its great that they don't shy away from extra information about list items - whereas it seems every other game show strives to dumb it down further and further.
  4. yes indeed! I love the show, it would be nice to have a real ending for it. All cancelled shows should be allowed at least a feature-length final episode when they're axed... if they're not going to axe them in enough time to wind it up in the season.
  5. I just hope they wrap up everything neatly at the last season before the flash forward... so if it does indeed blow chunks, then you can just stop buying the DVDs before the time warp. IMO a big gap like that would make it a totally different show, and increase the chance of it losing whatever fanbase it already has.
  6. I don't know if anyone else is getting into this show, but out of all the new gameshows I think this is the best. From a home-viewer perspective I think it really gets the synapses firing trying to come up with list items faster than they can say them. Its not high-brow, but definitely interactive viewing with a couple of people in the lounge room yelling list items at each other. Anyway, it dawns on me that since this show pairs up people (often different gender) then really there should be a winnings threshold at which their spouses give them a 'pass'... especially in the case of Lucy and Steve... they make a nice enough TV couple, and given they've won so much money together, it seems only fair Cheers
  7. dunno about some of these screencaps... seems to me like some of you guys have some crudly decoding software... some of these caps look like resized thumbnails.
  8. right, the bitrate has remained the same, but the resolution has increased. Presumably there will be an upgrade in bitrate, assuming this resolution gets a permanent nod. either way, the PQ is better, even allowing for artifacting
  9. yep.. not speculation here though - its definitely showing 1080i in melbourne.
  10. I used to do this, but I might stop doing that now... and actually have a clear head for the extra resolution
  11. MSN (and therefore the redirect to nineMSN) is the default homepage for millions of browsers. Thats a great way to artificially inflate your hit-count.
  12. oh well... lol thanks for you response anyway... like someone said in another thread, I should have known better than to expect something
  13. right... but the thing that gets me, is that its a red button, not the ABC logo - like with ten, its the Ten logo. I'm thinking the red button might not be arbitrary.... anyway, I dunno, wishful thinking I suppose
  14. Seems the ABC will be pushing some UK-style red-button interactive stuff, perhaps. Their promo between programs shows a kid running around chasing a red button marked "interactive" - I'd not heard anything about this previously, and really still haven't - just this promo which offers no detail whatsoever. ... first time I caught this tonight just before the west wing - does anyone have any detail they could offer?
  15. I've given up and hired a TV broker, to sit there refreshing the guide every 30 seconds, with his finger on the remote.
  16. Yes. The colour balance here in melbourne at least, is much better - my STB also seems to scale it a little better. Really, I don't mind it. Its SD++ to me, so I don't see why not watch that over the interlaced version. I understand wanting higher res... but what I don't understand is boycotting the HD channel just because it hasn't got the higher res. You realise nobody but you is affected by that, right? Whatever you may think of SD++, channel 7 are doing their bit for marketing HD. They push it really hard - and they provide their "best effort" content in the form of an SD++ loop to fool people into buying a television because they want to go to Dubai, or have a glass of white wine with whatsherface. The hardware uptake that Seven are pushing is making channel 10's head-first jump into HD a lot more worthwhile. ....... oh... and actually on-topic - I think the old HD logo was much better, but it also exposed the lack of resolution a lot more...
  17. Can't argue with that one... I still PVR it though, and put it on now (3:30am) or so, when there's nothing else on, and I'm still at my desk. I miss chunks of it, and it just doesn't matter... so much time is being spent on "character development" of 2-dimensional characters... I mean there's only so deep you can dig into a sheet of paper. its like a soapie.. you know where they're headed, they just take a year to get there, and in the mean time repeat the same few lines over and over again until one episode can be confused with another.
  18. seriously, who actually HAS these bloody ratings boxes? do they give them to monkeys on purpose or is a random sample of aussie audiences actually that stupid? All the great shows "don't rate" - well maybe its time to shuffle the damned ratings boxes around a little.
  19. Gotta love the occasional guy who does this kind of thing.... "Hi I don't watch the show, but the advertising for it really sucked me in... well, not enough to watch the episode, but MORE than enough to post on a forum about it, so that I can eventually tell everyone how little I actually care" does this sort of conflicted conversation actually happen in your head too? does your left arm block your right arm when you try and punch yourself out?
  20. It could be your STB struggling with the stream, Simon.
  21. Hey mate, your PMs are turned off so I couldn't send you my full name. I don't recognise your handle, so I'm thinking you might have me confused with someone else. What's your name? maybe I just don't recognise your handle.
