1. Looks most interesting Mick, I've included it in my next Amazon order. A couple of other younger guitarists I like come out of the current(recent?) Allman Bros Band. Derek Trucks is a clip I found this morning of the opening song of Songlines And Warren Haynes is a nice performance of an NY old favourite mentioned earlier. (prefer Dave Matthews' voice though) :bump:
2. I haven't posted in this thread as there are so many I could choose. I've just listened to this one which was a favourite 40 years ago. Of current guitarists I like Joe Bonamassa Ronnie Earle has been around for ever, Kansas City Monarch from Still River is my all time favourite last track before bed. Here he is with Duke Robillard from an excellent album, The Duke Meets The Earl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FK84h3a-JFM&feature=related
3. I'm in, I hope I do better than last year.
4. I have a couple of cats and I don't think you actually go far enough Alan. Neither of my cats ever go outside and it doesn't seem to bother them at all. Unfortunately my next door neighbour doesn't share my views and allow their 2 cats to wander day and night. Consequently I regularly find bird remains in my back yard.B) As I am aiming to provide a habitat for native birds and reptiles I'm not happy.
5. You had a couple of years head start on me, Brumby.
6. Thanks for birhday wishes gents, though by the time you get to my age you're really celebrating surviving another year.
7. Kansas City Monarch by Ronnie Earl Amazon sample here: http://www.amazon.com/Still-River-Ronnie-Earl/dp/B000003HKH/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304502760&sr=1-1
8. I'd have a few hundred albums which could be roughly categorised as blues. Names that I haven't seen mentioned would include: Tab Benoit Guitar Shorty Walter Trout Jimmy Thackery Bob Margolin are all guitarists that I would put at the rock end of blues. Roomful of Blues have been around for a long time, I prefer them with either Ronnie Earl or Duke Robillard on guitar though they've generally been pretty horny (if you know what I mean) Wanda Johnson Shemekia Copeland if you like blues shouters
9. Well there has been a deathly silence after the completion of the first round. I lost in SC (congratulations Chickadees) and won in DT; but my scores were disappointing. Good scores for those smart enough to have Dane Swan as their captain, not me unfortunately. A couple of early injuries will mean I'll probably have to trade this round which is not what I was hoping for. I wonder how long Grumpy can stay top of the ladder seeing that he isn't playing.
10. Well the first match is over and I had mixed results. DT wasn't much good, 342 points from 4 players but SC was all right with 514 points from 5 players. I'm glad I changed my mind on Chris Judd as captain when I saw the weather.
11. SC league is full. We can still take 2 more by eliminating Shane Crawford's and Grumpy's team if anyone else wants to join. Send me a PM by Thursday morning and I'll create a vacancy. We only have 8 teams in the DT league, and 3 of them are Tom Harley, Nick Maxwell & Dr Dream Team who have been added by the organisers. Lots of space there which will end up being filled for us. I'm TragiDees64 by the way. Let the games begin.
12. Good stuff Reggie, we now have 8 in the league for DT (2 ring ins) and 12 in SC (1 ring in) Mr HP and son are still to join up (in 1 or both) but Grumpy, whom I entered in SC, has decided that he doesn't want to play. I'm not sure what to do about his team, do I leave it in or withdraw it from our league?
13. Chet Baker and Bill Evans, easy listening and very nice
14. I'm not sure if i've posted this in the right section but I have just read that Warren Haynes is playing at the Corner on 24th April, supported by Joe Louis Walker. Warren will be backed by Ron Holloway on sax, Danny Louis on keyboards, Ruthie Foster on vocals & guitar and Terence Higgins on drums. One for the Gov't Mule and Allman Brothers fans, $66/ticket. (+ booking fee of course)
15. I'm listening to Simply Eva by Eva Cassidy for the first time. A new release of just Eva and her guitar. Songs recorded between 1993 & 1996; no songs that haven't been released on previous albums and not sung differently but well recorded and fresh due to the different backing. Recommended.
16. I've since found out that: There are no private league games in the “multi-bye” weekends when three teams have the bye – Rounds 4-6, Round 16 and Round 19 – but player scores on those weekends still count towards the overall prize. At least that makes it easier for the head to head league challenges and explains why they start from round 1 this year. It seems that there are 5 "multi-bye" rounds, not the 4 that I thought.
17. I've had a PM from Mr H-P that he and Jack are going to sign up to SC which will give us 10 out of 16 teams in the league. We're stuck on 4 in DT, however, so it looks like we'll struggle to get that full. I've sent PM's to forum members who have posted in the AFL 2011 thread but I haven't heard back from most of them yet. Here's a question for the players; the byes this year will make it very interesting. Last year you could load up with as many players as you wanted from one team but this year that strategy will lead to disaster. The question is: What is the maximum number of players that you can afford to have from the one team? My answer is 4, though I'll probably try to limit it to 3. The other interesting selection dilemna is that in 4 rounds (I think) 3 teams have a bye. I haven't worked out a strategy to deal with this yet, and they haven't increased the number of trades you can make each week from 2. How are we to get 22 players on the park in the 3 team bye rounds?
18. Not necessarily, unfortunately. If we can't get 16 players ourselves we will have ring-ins to fill the rest of the places.
19. Welcome aboard Mark, we now have 4 in the DT league and 6 in the SC league. Luck will have nothing to do with it, I'm relying on my immeasurable talent. Whether it is immeasurably small or large is open to debate however.
20. OK, for those who don't know how it works, here's a quick summation for SuperCoach; DreamTeam is almost identical. The aim of the game is to select a squad of 33 players, from all the AFL teams, 22 of whom will play for you each week and score points by getting kicks, taking marks, kicking goals etc. Initially, you have a salary cap of $10,000,000 which means that the average price that you can pay is $300,000 per player. Player's prices at the start of the season range from $633,700 (for Brendon Goddard) to $91,700 (for an untried rookie who has never played). You need to select 10 defenders, 9 midfielders, 4 ruckmen and 10 forwards for your squad. Each week you will select 7 defenders, 6 midfielders, 2 ruckmen and 7 forwards to make up the team that will score points for you. Of the 11 remaining players you select 3 as emergencies in case one of your 22 initial selections doesn't play. THe players' prices are not fixed during the year, if they perform well their price will increase, if they perform poorly they will decline in value. This is important because during the year you are allowed to trade 2 players per week. You sell them at their current value and buy others who play in the same position at their current value. It needs to be noted that the $10,000,000 salary cap only applies up to the start of round 1, if you have chosen well and your players are increasing in value the value of your team can easily exceed $12,000,000 during the year. Obviously with the initial salary cap you have to select a mix of gun players (Goddard, Swan, Ablett, and the like) who are very expensive but can be counted on to score you lots of points and, more importantly, cheap players who you think are undervalued so that after a few weeks their value will increase and you can consider trading them for a star who hasn't struck form yet so that their value has gone down. 2 classic examples from last year of initially cheap players who increased dramatically in value were Michael Barlow and James Podsiadly. If you had them in your team early in the year (as I did) you were well on the way to having a good year. It does take a bit of time to select your initial squad (unless you take Supercoach's autofill option) but week by week it is basically a fine tuning exercise which doesn't need to take long. I think that's it in a nutshell, if any novices want to play I'm happy to post my ideas of strategy and a more detailed explanation of exactly how it works later on.
21. We have 4 on Supercoach and 3 on Dreamteam at the moment; I might need to harass a few of the tragics on the forum to get the numbers up. At least I still have 3 weeks to find some more players.
22. As I've had a couple of people interested in a league on Dream Team, we'll see if we can get one filled there as well. My public league there is 661776.
23. I'm on both, so if we get enough interest we can do the same thing on DreamTeam.
24. What you do Grumps is go to this site http://supercoach.heraldsun.com.au/ register yourself as a player then start to choose 33 players to make up your squad. They players are all priced and you have a $10,000,000 budget that you have to stay under. Before the season starts you can change your squad as much as you want (making trades), but once round 1 commences you can only make two trades per week. 22 of your squad make up your team each week and they score points using Champion Data numbers which are probably printed in your newspaper each week. It's an excellent game for footy fans, have a look at the site and join in with us.
25. At this stage I'm an absolute certainty to take out every prize of course.:( Last year was the 1st time I went in it and I shocked myself by finishing in the top 5%. If I can do as well this year I will be delighted. The byes have added a new problem this year, I'll need to spread the selections around the teams much more than last year.
