The music streamer for the most demanding audiophile

There is no mysterious rocket science in our GulfStream. Some people ask, if they can assemble a similar machine themselves. Yeah, sure, but it will be similar only in "tech" parameters, but nowhere near - in sound.

We spent 6 years refining this machine, doing everyday tests and prototyping new solutions. We destroyed over tens of different motherboards, tried  and tested (musically) every RAM brand available, same for processors, USB cards, SSD drives etc. We created our own version of Linux, that is as lean as possible, while optimizing the collaboration between Roon, Linux kernel, motherboard bios, processor core assignments, temperature control, fanless cooling, etc.

Our Linux which is stripped down and optimized to the bone, doesnt have any GUI functions but it allows us to do remote servicing by RemoteViewer app, and helping clients without physical shipping. We optimized Linux for sound - comparing it to well known Linux builds as well as Windows server with Optimizer and Fidelizer.

Our motherboard is selected from the best professional server types, not for gaming and not for graphics. The motherboard and it's bios is also remotely serviceable from our office. Just connect the LAN cable and provide internet connectivity.

The biggest issue is: DSD support up to 512x, ability to cool the processor in real time PCM to DSD upsampling  (almost nobody on the market can do this), long term stability of the system.

Our GulfStream can read say 6 databases simultaneously, and play to 6 different users at the same time (like to all family members). It is a multi user, multi login, multi client server.

We took the hard route of designing and building our own fully linear power supply for this streamer. It is not HDplex, it is not impulse, it is the big and heavy PSU that delivers the power in the most music-friendly way. The PSU is the key factor in making the streamer that is more analog sounding than best vinyl.
 
It  takes time and money to buy EVERY part from a different vendor from a different country. First we have to import and stock this stuff in bulk. Pay shipping, customs and duties. Make sure everything matches. Have a skilled IT man put everything carefully together which takes 3 full days and 2 days testing and troubleshooting. Everything is in house designed and specified: the 350 Watt transformer, fully potted, encapsulated, with 4 secondary windings, each for different task.  Then our PSU is fully linear, CLC filtered, regulated, with 12 outputs, each custom built for each task. The whole PSU is fanless.

The mother-board is the best we could find with really “open budget”. It is dedicated to Intel XEON processors that are used only in professional servers. It fully supports our custom BIOS and remote management in case of need to do Remote Viewer.
 
Other specs are: 

16 GB DDR4 -PRO type RAM (Linux will not read more ram anyway, so we decided not to use more) ,   the heart of the system -  embedded drive carrying our own, home made audiophile Linux version, dedicated to Roon software and our hardware. It is so lean that there is not a single line of code we can remove further
Tablet acts as a remote control
This machine plays both PCM and DSD and as far as we are concerned it is the best that PC technology has to offer
Power consumption 30W.

Playing test music is conducted always with Pacific or Horizon DAC, as our ultimate sound benchmark! 

Playing in our special dedicated listening room that no other "normal" computer company can even comprehend.

For quick playback you can instantly play from a memory stick, from USB external 3_1/2 inch drive or from the internet. A 5 inch drive requires a docking station with separate PSU to work.
Our software of choice is only ROON which can play from internet radio, Tidal or QOBUZ. Your own NAS, your HDD stack and Tidal + QOBUZ will appear seamlessly in the ROON.
All machines come with English version. 
All machines will play DSDx64, DSDx128 DSD256x and 512  in native form. Conversion on the fly is possible with right settings. It concerns both DSD to PCM and vice versa. It allows you to play internet streams like QOBUZ and Tidal MQA converted to DSD on the fly.

The GulfStream will be undeniably sound superior to any digital source you ever heard. In our tests it beats any CD transport - Esoteric VRDS Neo, Theta, Teac VRDS series, Philips PRO series, CEC TL-0 3.0, simply - anything out there. The Aqua La Scala DAC is designed with a specific "purist" audio philosophy that prioritizes a direct, un-oversampled signal path, leading to perceived low gain because it does not use digital oversampling or filtering and has a hybrid tube/MOSFET output stage with no negative feedback. This approach preserves the original digital sample's transient shape, but the resulting analog signal can sound quieter and less "punchy" compared to DACs that use digital filters and standard amplifier designs which boost the signal. The lower gain is an intentional design choice, but it can be compensated for by increasing the input gain on a separate preamplifier or amplifier. 
 
Design philosophy and output stage
Non-oversampling (NOS) design: The La Scala doesn't use digital filters or oversampling, which directly converts the original digital samples to an analog signal. This process can result in a lower output level compared to DACs that upsample the signal, as upsampling can boost the signal's overall level.
Hybrid output stage: The DAC uses a hybrid output stage that combines ECC81 tubes with high-speed MOSFETs. This stage is designed to be Class A and does not use negative feedback, which is a technique often used in conventional amplifiers to increase gain but can also alter the signal.
Purist approach: This design is intended to preserve the original transient shape of the digital signal and avoid ringing caused by digital filtering. However, it does not include any digital signal boost that some users may expect or find necessary for certain setups.

To address these issues, many SACD players convert DSD64 to PCM for D/A conversion, undermining the advantages of DSD. This limitation significantly contributed to SACD's struggle against CDs in the market.
Recent advances in DSD coding and FPGA technology have enabled the development of algorithms that raise DSD frequency from 2.8224 MHz to much higher rates. This innovation improves D/A accuracy and shifts out-of-band noise to higher frequencies, making it easier to filter. With these advancements in mind, we embarked on the development of a high-precision DSD frequency-raising algorithm.
R&D History

DSD Conversion
Converting the ones and zeros of digital audio into music we cannot distinguish between live or recorded is an art. Most of today’s sophisticated DACs are IC based instruments using off-the-shelf-chips that rely upon Multi-bit Sigma-Delta functions to process the incoming digital audio. While these are relatively simple to design and produce, they rarely give the best sonic results. DirectStream takes a different approach by first converting all digital audio signals into a purer form of digital audio known as DSD. DSD is a far more analog-like encoding and decoding process than the classic CD based PCM. In fact, most modern A/D converters used to make recordings are DSD based already. DirectStream takes both PCM and DSD, upsamples the data and converts to single-bit DSD and then outputs pure music regardless of input format for the data. The results of this design can be heard in increased musical information presented to the listener at every opportunity. When you listen to DirectStream you never are accosted by added bright, hard glare in the music as happens with many active designs. Output and Volume
Most modern DACs use some form of active tube or solid state output stage to amplify, filter and drive the DAC’s output. DirectStream takes a different approach: passive. Sound differences compared to a standard Fein II is improved midrange and slightly more extended bass.
Overall I would describe it as a very sweet sounding unit with a noticeable improvement over the standard version.

Even though just about everything digital contains its own DAC (digital to analog converter), sometimes these individual digital kits are just not enough for the sound quality experience that is wanted in a home. A separate DAC has the ability to deliver a crisper, cleaner, and more high quality sound than what might be heard without one. A DAC also increases the amount of supported file data rates than what might be previously offered before using a DAC.

The Chord Qutest is the newest in the Chord lineup and is a 'pure' DAC, meaning that it does not come with the capability of a headphone jack, but it still brings with it the ability to improve the sound quality within your home. The Qutest is the next step in sound quality evolution from the 2Qute. Qutest has even made it as a What Hi-Fi?Star of CES 2018. It has been built based on Chord's proprietary FPGA technology which has won many awards proving that it has become a leader in sonic and technical performance. 

Even with its small size (41mm x 160mm x 72mm), it features coaxial digital input, optical input, and a galvanically isolated USB-B. Since the Qutest is able to support so many components, it will immediately modernize older sources while giving an instant boost to performance. With this new model, a different kind of flexibility is introduced with its input controllable inputs and user-selectable frequency shaping filters. The Qutest also includes input connections for Chord Electronics products that will be coming down the line. Up for sale is a Bryston BDA-1 DAC, widely regarded as the most analogue of all Bryston DACs.

Features the most number of digital inputs I think I've ever seen on a DAC, 8 in total.

Very lightly used, mainly for video purposes.

I really like the sound of this DAC, if I had to describe it I would say it has an analogue quality about it. It would likely give most DACs at this price point and above a good run for their money.
