The loudspeaker specialist based in Soissons, France, sets its stall out very early in the press release, stating that the BR04 is "born of the desire to push the limits of the famous BR03, offering even better performance in a compact bookshelf speaker." This is fighting talk because the passive Borea BR03 received the coveted StereoNET Applause Award.

We are told that the new BR04 promises upgraded performance while maintaining the signature qualities that have helped to define Triangle's popular Borea line of speakers.

We have been mightily impressed by Triangle's Borea range, having sampled the BR03 standmounters in both passive and active guises as well as the more statuesque BR08 floorstanders. This range accomplishes much at very little outlay for the customer. Even the flagship BRO10 came in at under £/€1.5k when it was released.

The BR04 two-way standmounters offers a 25mm EFS (Efficient Flow System) silk-dome tweeter partnered with a 16cm cellulose pulp mid/bass driver set in a 425x220x314 mm cabinet featuring Triangle's proprietary DVAS (Driver Vibration Absorption System) tech designed to deliver "clear vocals and natural warmth". The midwoofer's cone has been reworked to reduce distortion at higher frequencies and louder volumes. It also benefits largely from technology borrowed from the higher-ranking Esprit Ez model.

The mid/bass unit is further supported by a redesigned front bass reflex port to optimise airflow and an upgraded crossover. In concert with a larger speaker cabinet, Triangle tells us this results in a "deeper, more controlled" bass signature and extends the frequency response to 44 - 22,000 Hz, with a sensitivity of 90db/W. The minimum impedance is listed at 4.4 Ω, with 8 Ω given as the BR04's maximum.

Depending on your needs, the new speakers offer double-binding posts, allowing for bi-wiring and bi-amplification. Thanks to their promised penchant for "reproducing the timbres of human voices", Triangle envisions the BR04 as ideal for home cinema use and stereo hi-fi setups.

The Triangle Borea BR04 is available now in chestnut, green, blue, light oak, ash black or white, priced at €549 | US$624 | A$1,100 per pair, with prices in other territories awaiting confirmation.
