Denon's 2022/2023 A-Series, X-Series and S-Series AV receivers support all the popular 3D sound formats such as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, IMAX Enhanced, Auro 3D, and now Sony 360 Reality Audio. Of course, Denon's room calibration system Audyssey is on-board, but on some of the premium models, you can also upgrade to Dirac Live.
However, before reaching for Dirac Live, it might be worth checking out Audyssey's new graphical user interface, which is said to boast new wording and pictures as well as being uprated from 480p to 1080p. The results should make the system even more user-friendly and help more to get the most from their system.
DENON A-SERIES
Sitting at the top of the range is the AVC-A1H/AVR-A1H, the prefix depending where in the world you are. Replacing Denon's Applause Award-winning AVC-A110 110th Anniversary Edition AV Amplifier, it boasts 15 channels of amplification, Denon's most powerful transformer and a hefty, "high-rigidity" construction. You also will be able to upgrade to Dirac Live once the update lands.
The AVC-A1H can drive a 7.4.6 system thanks to processing for up to four subwoofers and four assignable balanced XLR outputs. Moreover, all seven of its HDMI inputs and three outputs support HDMI 2.1 and 8K video signals at 60fps. The AVC-A1H will be released in early 2023, priced at £6000.
DENON X-SERIES
The AVR-X4800H/AVC-X4800H sports nine channels with a claimed 200W apiece and can accommodate four subwoofers, making it capable of driving a 5.4.4 system in Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, IMAX Enhanced, Auro 3D and Sony 360 Reality Audio. Seven 8K-friendly HDMI 2.1 inputs and three outputs round things off alongside supporting VRR, ALLM and QFT for the gamers out there. A software update will add Dirac Live upgradability to the X4800H, which will have a £2200 price tag when it's released in early 2023.
Can't wait until next year? The X3800H launches in October and almost matches the X4800H on the spec sheet save losing an HDMI input and 20W per channel in output. That said, it can be yours sooner and for £1500.
Rounding off the new X-Series is the X2800H 7.2 channel AV receiver. This offers a claimed 95W per channel and can be configured to drive a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos or DTS:X system. You get three HDMI 2.1 inputs, and a pair of similarly spec'd outputs alongside a trio of HDMI 2.0 inputs. Also available from October, the AVCX-2800H/ AVR-X2800H is priced at £870 or £900 if you want to add DAB.
DENON S-SERIES
Meanwhile, for those looking for power in a budget-friendly package is the new king of the S-Series, the AVR-S970H.
Capable of 145W per channel in a 7.2 set-up, it offers two HDMI outputs joined by six inputs, half of which are HDMI 2.1 units. The AVR-S970H will be available from October, priced at £800.
