"about 5m x 5m with a stairwell cavity. The room has lots of big windows and little furniture or soft furnishings"

This room would make a high end system sound bad, square with lots of reflections. Try and get soft furnishings in there and some rugs, maybe eventualy room treatments.

Nice choice on the speakers.

Im a fan of Pioneer, before I got all hifi mad I used to have pioneer everything. Amp, Surround, Blu-ray. Still have the plasma and its great.

Anyways I have multiple amps (pioneer) under the house. Ill check in the morning. you can have one for shipping cost if you would like.

(I gotta clean house for a big move)

Cheers

Looks like this  thread has run its course and you have ended up with a system costing a bit shy of $700 with a budget of $1000 . Do take Walker 1000's advice on room acoustics though, and please inform us when you have it up and running. Give us a rundown :)

Yeah, things are certainly happening. I'll still need to get some cabling and probably a sound card, so it won't be hard to spend a few more dollars. The room itself is going to be quite a project. Audio requirements are at least partly in conflict with aesthetics, but I suppose that's normal. I'll work on it.

I'd still like to build some speakers, lots of research to do there.

This is just an opinion but don't go crazy on cables, do your own research on that. Be careful to avoid all  the BS

(Edited) i also not have less than perfect room acoustics also.  So in the interest of aesthetics I am off out today to see if i can find some rugs with the right density and pattern to hang on my walls here and there like paintings to modify my acoustic issues to a degree anyway.

If you do decide cables are important to you have a look at mogami and maybe blue jeans.

Wow Rob, you're a legend! Thanks for the offer, but I ordered the R-N301 last night. I'm sure there is someone here who would appreciate an amp though.

No worries at all Leon.

Once I do the clean up I'll have a fair bit of stuff to donate/sell.

Good luck with the new system !

Here is my first, crude setup. I am enjoying the sound and also the functionality that this receiver gives. I am sure I am not getting the best possible results yet.

Hey Leon,  love your speaker stands, very eighties retro :)  Great to hear you got your gear. Your room acoustics though   you have my problem, wood floors and metal Venetians, and sparse furnishing. I am thinking you are getting  a lot of sibilance (mostly female voices having a pronounced, bright and accentuated  "sssssssss" sound) like i have. Did the speakers surprise you? hope you are enjoying :)

I reckon they were a bargain. They sound great to me, zero complaints. The room is now my limiting factor.

On another matter, I've just bought a new tv which has an optical toslink output. Is this going to sound better than the 3.5mm jack?

Yes, your yami would be better decoding the digital stream than your TV.
