Vintage Yamaha System

Featured Replies

Been building my system and today i get to put the cherry on top.

Scored a set of NS690mk1 . When i picked them it was their second trip in a car since 1973 (well he was a little fuzzy on the exact year, he thought maybe 1972, but i dont think they were released then).

The guy was asked by his mother in law to assist with moving them to the nature strip for hard rubbish, he admired the cabinets and took them home. His wife wants smaller speakers so he moved these ones on...to me! he reckons that other than him picking them up they have sat in the same spot in the original owners house for over 40 years since new.

I saw the CR820 they were connected to...these have not had a hard life! All the edges of the cabinets are sharp, the speakers and wood are minty. Only 2 faults 1. the cloth cover is fluffy but complete. 2. some pot plant stains on the stop, which i will tackle sometime.

Tonight i will sit them next to my NS70T, hook them up to my newly acquired CA1000 and start enjoying them.

Here's the important pic of them becoming mine http://1drv.ms/1HyfQv3 more pics to follow...

Since my last post i have spent a fair bit of time and money. I spend a lot of time measuring and treating the room. Still not happy and endlessly locked down in Victoria, i decided to try and  go as

I've been doing some listening since i got this gear...and...while there is many systems nicer than mine. Mine gives me this huge grin, this huge sense of satisfaction. I grew up on my old man's 1972

Good things come to those who spend hours trolling the Internet for what they want!  Well done mate.  It doesn't matter what you have in your system as long as it's what you've dreamed of.  Let me know how it all sounds.  I can imagine the grin from ear to ear. :party :party :party :party

Oooh, they look lovely! :love

(Makes me want to get the paint stripper onto the cabinets of one pair of NS1000's and see what the veneer is like under the black paint.  I could then be tempted to get them stained in a light oak colour and cleared professionally............or reveneered if necessary. Maybe even finish with a high quality gloss clear, a la Kendrick sound.)

Anyway congrats on your find.  Hope they sound as good as they look. :thumb:

Aaaaargh I just died a little inside haha

I too hope they sound as good as they look. I only gave them a few sec audition at it was 6am and his family was asleep. Man this is gonna be a long day...they are sitting in my car, waiting for me :)

If you love the NS1000, why not make a cabinet? It cant cost that much to duplicate them in a nice thick ply or solid timber?

Ask this guy to pop them apart and flat pack and send to you? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/YAMAHA-NS-1000-EBONY-CABINETS-very-rare-No-Grills-3-Cabinets-Available-/281007628197

Good God Man get them out of your car!!!! Thieves be lurking.  If you deal with Michael on eBay he is ok :thumb:.  I've messaged him/purchased a few things.  But the postage is the murder.

Get em home, cracked a beer and put some tunes on and BUGGAR one tweeter is out. Pulled them down, cleaned the L Pad and cured scratchiness in all them, fixed a minor kink in the mid grill.

Pull the tweeter out and its got a broken wire at the voice coil...i am trying to cool my heals. I am off to speakerbits collect a woofer this week, i might ask if they can do a 'while i wait' repair. I checked voltages to the tweeter and it seems to be fine, just a busted wire...i think it happened in transit, i listen to all speakers when i picked it up.

Otherwise, i still think they are minty :) http://1drv.ms/1LI0xe6

I do a little soldering, but i am no expert and that wire looks like it would melt quicker than solder...

I measured the NS70T and the NS690 - the 70 is 10mm deeper and 25mm wider...must be a technique to compensate for the small woofer.

Hard to gauge the difference between them in sound with the blown tweeter (they are A/B on my CA1000). I will do that on the weekend.

There was some spares on eBay a while back. Buy some when they come up if you can afford. Once they are gone they are gone! Looks good mate

Yes keep looking for those tweeters - they do pop up every now and then.

A good friend replaced the ones in his NS690 a couple of years ago - found a pair on ebay.

Gorgeous sounding speakers - well worth keeping.

Thanks i am trying to find some one to repair the one i have - i have seen many threads online where people have repaired them - but i am not skilled enough to try myself. I also have a couple of leads on replacements/spares. I'll buy up any spares i can find - i intend on keeping these forever.

Anyone know where to buy the cover material from - i will recover the grills.

I know for NS1000m the grill cloth is not made any more... don't know about yours.  Might have to keep an eye out for good grills or go aftermarket.  As with the speaker what needs to be repaired?  I am having some voice coils flat wound Atilla Tanka 0425776941.

Hi there, see the pic above. (http://1drv.ms/1StmaEl)%C2'> of the wires to the voice coil is snapped. Spoke to Atilla, he can fix it (and not so expensive). Tom at speakerbits said he could fix it too and i have to go there to pick up another speaker...but hard to get any info on how long it would take etc...in fact he cant even tell how long my current speaker will be. i really wanna be using them this weekend!

I'll get a pic of my grills, they aren't that bad, just fluffy. Otherwise still a nice black and even colour.

My NS-1000m's have been in repair for about a year but it's more a "love" job than profit so I don't mind. My Ibanez guitar took 2 years... Guess if you want the right job done it can take time. ;-)

Finally built some speaker stands (well it feel like an eternity, but its been a week :) ) Cheap and cheery, and they can store my records. My 13yo son and i knock them up in quick time. http://1drv.ms/21DWj2V  I cant believe how different they sound on stands. I had them on the floor and i was starting to feel like i had made a big mistake, put them on stands and they are dramatically different.

I have 3 original tweeters reported as fully working on the way...my one is off for repair. So i am hoping the tweeter issue is under control.

Made a similar stand to hide the cable from amps etc I have a limited spot for hifi and so far my grand parents old marble table is what i have.

The Room is 3 way with 690s facing NS-70Ts and on one side the vegas.

Got 2 x air ports for wifi streaming to any system

PF800 connected to CA1000 only.

I have the Yamaha CR1040 'under maintenance' which will replace the black Yamaha AX596 and i am adding another CA 1000. Then thats me done! (might add some nice speaker cable).

Current HiFi List

CA-1000

CR-1040

PF-800

NS-690 mk1

NS-70T

M-40 9 (Connected to Cerwin Vegas - its our rock the neighbourhood system)

AX-596 (on its way to my daughter room with some bookshelfs)

My son has an awesome technics SU-V5 (plus matching tuner, EQ and Speakers) in his room.

My shopping list is reduced to nice records (Beatles in Mono) and a new MC cart! Feeling pretty good - hoping the wife doesn't calculate what i've spent or some of this stuff might appear in the classifieds!

Haha the end game approaches! We will see haha.

Looks great. I just remembered why the NS-690 always get me... My OCD that the crossovers are on the same side on both speakers...

Good job and extra special that you're doing it with your son!

Got new/old tweeter from Japan installed (and 2 spares). Speakers working as they should. I have been using them without the tweeter, but the difference with it in is so huge. Is having the tweeter in the circuit important to the operation of the mid and driver in that speaker? Debating with myself whether i should recap them...maybe next year.

I know its a basic setup, but its sounding pretty nice. the yamaha ax596 will be replaced by the yamaha cr1040...one of these days...i had it working last weekend, but sadly, only for an hour :(

Got my eye peeled for a cabinet for that little space.

My son and i are are rotating the test songs through the 2 systems and 6 speakers in that room.

We cant agree on anything in terms of what sounds nice...maybe on the weekend we will compare the NS70T and NS690 carefully. He like the vegas and cranking them up :)

I've been doing some listening since i got this gear...and...while there is many systems nicer than mine. Mine gives me this huge grin, this huge sense of satisfaction. I grew up on my old man's 1972 Kreisler and i thought that was hi fi - i heard a few good systems since. but i was only in the position to buy just what i wanted in the last couple of years. I spent what more than others and less than some - but every single time I sit and listen to the music (i dont listen for technical nuance), it blows my last remaining hairs back. It just genuinely sounds great. To me it looks ultra cool cos i am tuned into that 70s retro look.

I've had a stiffy for ns1000 since i heard about them, but since i have never listened to them i am gonna spend my 'quietly squirreled away from the missus' coin on something else. I dont need any other upgrade! Sounds silly, but its true.

I feel so fortunate!!!

It will always be niggling in your mind.... Then when you ha e them the NS2000's will be calling you lol

If you dig it, that's all that matters!  :)  Congrats  :thumb:

That didin't last long. I bought some NS500M and sold the NS70T.

NS500M are great, they do have greater clarity and the bass is fast and hard hitting. But the overall sound of my CA1000/NS690 combo still sounds more appealing. Not as technically competent, but more appealing. on most of the stuff i play.

When you play something a little more modern, or vocal or delicate the NS500M shines much brighter than the 690.

For now, a very satisfying combo!!!

Next, i am going to add valves (i think).

Ever had ns1000m?

Nope! My budget is modest. So i am always trying to get best bang for buck. NS500M is a good compromise (Be Tweeter, Carbon bass, Ti mid) but i expect the Be mid makes a pretty big difference in the NS1000 but triple the price. :) At 2-2.5k i imagine there is modern speaker that would be a better investment?

My thinking is, as long as i don't go and listen to something fantastic and unaffordable, my small improvements are relative to my previous investments and all sound pretty good, to me :)

I am saving, and I hope to buy into something modern later in the year.

I was just curious because I've once had those 500m. Yeah I'd think better bang in the modern at that price range. Frankly the current going prices are a little outta control.
