Hi All,

After upgrading from a manual cleaner to the Okki Nokki MKIV a few months ago, i was in vinyl cleaning heaven up until a few weeks back.

Now after cleaning a maximum of 6 LP's, the machine appears to lose its vacuum which results in the wand lifting off the platter during rotation.

It continues like this maybe 3-4 times on the clean cycle for each side which is when i just call it quits for the day.

Anyone else out there own this Okki and having similar problems.

Any help/advise greatly appreciated :thumb:

cheers, Tom

This might be unrelated, give it a go anyway.

I had a problem where it would intermittently stop working. The motor would rotate but the vacuum wouldn't work. This was resolved by following the below instructions.

Take off the vacuum tube and pour some water (I used distilled just to be safe). Make it around 50 - 100 mL. I didn't really measure.

Pick up the Okki Nokki and give it a couple of vigorous swirls. Make you sure can hear water inside swirling.

Once your done empty out the water, you should see some gunk. This a build up residue that wasn't emptied out properly. The gunk blocks the internal sensors and it stops the Okki Nokki from working properly.

I could be wrong, at least you'll have a clean Okki Nokki.

Thanks guys

Dolphy, I'll give that a go as you say can't do any harm.

Hergest, it's emptied regularly with about 20mil being emptied at any given time.

Is that too much? I do a distilled water rinse after the wash.

Thanks again

Hey Dolphy,

gave this a go, but the water wasnt any dirtier than any other time - no sludgy bits or anything like that.

what i did notice though was that one of the felt strips has dis-bonded for a length of about 2mm in the middle on the wand and daylight could be seen.

could this be the culprit as it would break the vacuum??. Will need to get spare strips and see

cheers

I hope so Luc.

will need to wait until the new strips arrive

you can buy velvet ribbon strips at spotlight. I purchased a couple of OEM Okki Nokki strips for $20, then went to spotlight and bought 2 meters of the stuff for $5. :)

I reckon you want to keep then fairly fresh as that's what's rubbing along your records.  I replaced mine last weekend and it seemed to vacuum better.

Oh and I always put about a 1/2 cup of clean water in the tank and rinse it out at the end of very session. Repeat enough times so it runs clear out the hose..

@charlie_bird  Barry how many cleans are you doing before your changing the wipers? I see@@ozfifer Tom is getting 6 lps cleaned before his go wonky. At 6 lp's that would mean changing them after almost every cleaning session(at least here it would) I'd imagine.

When I said fairly often I mean every approx. 40- 60 hours (as required ?). Mine were visibly worn down when compared with the new strips.

My read of the OP said is that now that his are worn down he gives up trying to use the machine after 6 goes..

Ah, I see.

I'm asking because one of these is on my radar but like so many before me I'm not sure. Would a nitty gritty be better would a Ubeaut blah blah be better...I'm sure you've been there :)

I do the same thing, especially since mine started to play up due to the build up of crap.

I'm very happy with my okki nokki. It took me a while to get good at using it, there is a bit of technique you learn.

Just about to setup for day of record cleaning, my wife is getting a bit angry that it was left on the ktchen table all last week. :)

Anyone using Melody Mate ?

not here. currently using the mixture that came with the ON.

i must say though. i cleaned PF's meddle (echoes) with the old KAB EV1 and there was one noticeable skip i couldnt get rid off no matter how many times i cleaned it.

enter the ON using the supplied cleaenr - one clean and gone. Saved me from having to buy another 1st press copy :)

I've used Melody Mate  on records previously cleaned and the gunk that it uncovered was remarkable, so much so that I've stop using it as it freed up that much gunk in the grooves that the stylus was picking it up so I'm holding off now till I get a RCM

Yes. @@Hensa kindly gave me a bottle of the stuff. I've found it removes more gunk than the mixture that came with my Okki Nokki.

I've found Melody Mate to be the most effective cleaning mix I've used by some margin. Highly recommend the stuff!

That's it exactly Leigh. My secret recipe that I got off Telecine is pretty damn good but MM leaves it for dead, I couldn't believe the gunk coming out of the grooves.

so it's had no side effects at all on your ON?

@@evil c  Thanks mate, appreciate it but I'm hoping to have a bigger budget soon that might let me slip a black box past the Handbrake unnoticed.

I've probably cleaned between 300-400 LPs over the last two years. The ON is showing no signs of wear and tear. There is very little released from the reservoir following cleaning though. I may try to do as @@dolphy suggested and give it a flush, just to see if there is any build up in there.

Cheers,

Leigh
