What did I just buy? Mysterious Column 8/Stentorian hybrid?

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a pair of speakers that I thought were almost certainly Wharfedale Cloumn 8s. The seller didn't give much information so I was hoping to get them and open them up and find original 8-inch Wharfedale 8/145 drivers and have them in working condition but for the price I didn't really mind if they had different drivers like the Super 8 drivers. The price was low enough that I took them untested and with very few photos.

Upon opening them I have found that they have English Stentorian hf816 drivers. Everything else appears to be incredibly similar to the typical Column 8 you can find online. I've not come across any of these drivers being used in a column 8 style cabinet so I'm bit perplexed as to what these are.

Could they be a locally-made Column 8 replica with Stentorian drivers? 'Real' Column 8's with replaced drivers? Something else entirely?

The cabinet has been constructed  in accordance with the Wharfedale column speaker plans. The Stentorian  HF 816 may have been used to replace a faulty 8/145 speakers or used instead of that model when production ceased in the early 1960,s.

Thank you. Is there any indication as to whether these are a diy job or a factory made unit? I suppose they could be either but they do have all the standard construction of the speaker plans including the stiffening dowel.

Also, is there anything I can do to freshen up the speaker cones? They are very dry and need a good clean. Thanks!

Given the type of construction used, it appears to be the work of a cabinet maker. Factory manufacture generally requires quantity production runs and usually you would expect to find a stamp or label indicating the manufacturer.

The Stentorian cones consisted of a top layer of a cambric cloth cone and surround, backed with a paper cone. From the front, when new they were brown in colour. It seems black dye has seeped from the paper cone into the cloth.  Brush away dust firstly then wipe the surface with a barely damp sponge to remove ingrained dust. Be careful, if the cone gets wet it can go out of shape.
