Rotel S14 remote IR or RF?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I just purchased a Rotel S14 streaming integrated amp. I have it connected to my TV via optical and I had planned to use the AppleTV remote to control the volume of the amp (as the AppleTV remote can learn other IR remote commands for volume). This requires pointing the remote at the AppleTV and pressing the volume buttons so it can learn the IR commands being transmitted. Unfortunately it doesn't register any command from the Rotel remote at all. To rule out the AppleTV being an issue I tried other remotes in the house and it works fine.

I cannot find any information on whether the S14 remote uses IR or RF. I've put my hand in front of the remote to block the signal path to the amp and it doesn't work at all, which suggests it is indeed IR (as RF should work irrespective of whether it is pointed at the amp or not).

Rotel has zero information on their website and searching the web doesn't yield any results - surely I can't be the first person to try to do this? I really want a single remote solution as it's much more friendly for everyone else in the house.

I've had a previous amp with an optical input and the TV could actually control the volume of the amp over optical, sadly my Samsung TV doesn't detect the Rotel properly to do that either.

My next step will be to try get hold of a universal remote, program it for Rotel, and see if the amp responds to inputs from that. I've also already emailed Rotel support.

Any help appreciated.

Chris

The remote is IR, however Ive seen some brands using some non-standard codesets (T+A for example seem to do some unusual things with their IR so I cant seem to get that programmed or learned through a couple of my universal remotes)

Thanks @Hydrology I thought something like that could be the case. It seems whenever I buy anything in the tech realm,  there's always some little thing / bug / oversight / annoyance, that I would expect to never be a problem (that a reviewer would very likely never identify) that comes along to ruin my perfect little party.
