Help designing modest HT in an old lounge room.

Featured Replies

3.7mx4.9m lounge room in an old style house we are looking at purchasing. It’s the only room I could maybe set up a home theatre in. But where would you start? It seems such a bad room to do so with those beautiful doors, floors, shape and windows. All those nice features make it terrible for a HT IMO.

how would you tackle this?

Let me get this out of the way first.  I prefer sharing movies in the family room and dislike the idea of upending everyone just to watch.  Putting that aside...

Firstly,  put TV or projector screen on short side of room and do a 5.x.4 setup.  (And no couches on back wall!). Suggest adding heavy curtains on windows (to floor) which can be drawn back all the way.  Depending on your preference and budget, add heavy rugs to floor, curtains for door,  artwork acoustic panels, book shelves, soft furnishings etc etc.  If looks are a concern, skip big bass traps, ceiling panels, lots of standard acoustic panels.

And look for gear with Dirac Live Active Room Treatment (DLART).

While currently available only on Storm Audio, there should be more affordable ones coming this year.

Give us couple of more pics showing the two other sides/ corners of the room, but from what I can see, easily done

it won’t be a dedicated home theatre room, but then suspect with aspects of the room that maybe not something you want to change to. But doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy movies in that room if that’s the intent. Better than gold class :D is possible in a humble lounge room believe it or not :D

what is the expected budget ?

I have a similar size room in an old Mt Lawley heritage house for the stereo hifi room and it works well enough. From your first pic align audio system on left wall or across/above the fireplace, large carpet rug, place enough furniture to break room reflections like fabric sofa, cabinets, curtains, some decorative acoustic diffusers or absorbers if needed.

That’s near me haha. However the housing crisis has priced me out of there.

On the positive side with 3m high ceilings in old houses can put large 2.7m tall speakers

You're in Perth!

Get rid of the heater and get aircon for starters!

Then!..........you can put the tele where the mirror is.....(roughly, after you've flattened that wall)...........and put the audio rack underneath it.

Because the room is a box, some treatment may be required but DSP might offer a more cosmetic cure.

We haven’t seen one whole side of the room,

but I think the fire place can stay …

… it would be tragedy to remove it ..,

I don’t think a lot needs doing to the room …just comes down to making best use of it.

can make some suggestions but best to know what whole room looks like 😞

System front of fire place on narrowest wall 3.6m wide x 5m long room
