DIY Skyline Diffusers

Featured Replies

Currently in the process of finishing a set of skyline diffusers tuned for my room made from recycled jarrah. A lot of work and wow, very heavy too! Looking forward to getting these up in the near future.

I also did something like that with pine (thinking it would be lighter!) and screwed each rectangular piece with a long screw thru a 15mm plywood backing - jeez, never again!

When I designed the next ones, I simply cut the 13 stepped longitudinal profiles and glued them together to obtain the same sequence - there's a number of duplicates - still a real PIA to build the initial 2, and I needed at least 16 of them - it was never going to happen!

Then I sourced some 40mm thick styrene foam and simply cut the same 13 stepped longitudinal strips and just glued them together and painted them - it was virtually the same result as the solid timber ones.

Then, the struggle to simplify the Schroeder 1D diffusers - the available kits are well over $200 each and the backwall required at least 8 panels (600 wide x 1200 high) - then discovered Tim Perry's (Arqen Acoustics) "leanfusers" and so much simpler in styrene and the equivalent (and possibly better) results.

I don't think anyone is selling them retail anymore - the design is free but not for commercial production without a license - very simple to make diy (with a 600 mm wide hot-wire knife) or professional styrene company.

Circumstances changed and about to setup the listening room again - it'll be interesting with the 2-way speakers and OB mids/tops

Just finished making 4 - 1200 x 600 HF panels, again using recycled jarrah for the frames and also managed to score a roll of high quality charcoal color carpet very cheaply.  These should be very effective for reducing slap and echo, and hopefully will blend with the decor when I repaint the room.

They look great Pete.

What have you used behind the carpet?

Thanks Jon.

The carpet is glued with spray contact adhesive to 8mm MDF with a 15mm MDF frame. Very cheap, just time consuming! I then glued and nailed a 45 degree angle cleat at one end and also on one side (centre) to mount either vertically or horizontally - still undecided.

I managed to install the block matrix diffusers and HF panels. The results are not huge, but noticeable with improved clarity and dynamics. Surprisingly they actually look pretty good too. I tossing up on making another 4 x smaller block matrix diffusers or a couple of HF panels to go above the TV, and then I think I'm done.😎
