Zoo Tv Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Hi all, Wondering if anyone has received their speakers yet and has any experiences they wish to share? I'm half way through the wait (ordered early January) and guess I am killing time whilst I impatiently wait..........
Ruffy Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Hi Zoo, I've been meaning to get on here and give a write-up on the DC-X35s, as part of a major stereo overhaul last year I purchased a set and must say I am blown away. It all started about six months ago... My wife, who can be a little anal retentive god bless her, was looking at my stereo and complaining about the asymmetrical quality about it. At this time I was running a Denon AVR-1705, a pair of Krix Harmonix and a Seismix 5; the sub was out of place and I was given the ultimatum to either sell it or buy another one to even it out. We live in a two bedroom townhouse where space is limited so I didn't even entertain the thought of two large subs. After packing up the Siesmix 5 though I found the Harmonix lacking bass. Severley. I cannot say it was the Harmonix at fault though, I think I had them well underpowered by the older Denon AVR. I did like the sound they produced, it was just on the other hand a good mate has the Neuphonix driven by a large Harmon/Kardon and these have so much more bass. After reading stereo.net.au backwards I decided to put the whole lot on gumtree and rebuild from the ground up; being in Darwin listening opportunities were limited so I put full trust in you good fellows at stereo.net. The DC-X always received fab reviews and everyone said they had oodles of base without a sub, perfect as another sub was out of the question. Conveniently they were on sale too! I also got permission to replace the denon with a Rega Brio-R, DAC and HiFace2, I'd just sold my motorbike due to a new addition to the family so was allowed to splurge a bit. They've been in use now for the last eight weeks or thereabouts, the DC-X have loosened up quite a bit and I am nothing but impressed! I don't miss having the Seismix at all, the bass is there and as good as what I had. It actually makes me think I didn't have my old sub integrated correctly; music is now so seamless and sounds so much better than it ever has. My wife, who has no interest in these things what-so-ever, has even commented a few times on how good the new set-up sounds. The other day we compared 320 kbps mp3s with the CDs I ripped them from and the difference in quality was staggering, something we'd never been able to pick up on so easily before. I can see my FLAC collection is ow going to have to grow... Thanks go to Philip and the team at VAF, very easy to deal with and always helpful! To say I am ecstatic with the VAFs would be an understatement, you will be very pleased with the new addition to your set-up Zoo! 1
RockandorRoll Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Great stuff Ruffy. Intersting to read your thoughts on the sub, Ive found them hard to intergrate well into 2 channel music and did away with it. Are your DCX the 35th anniversary editions?
Ruffy Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Hi RAOR, Yep, no. 14 of 50. I was worried about what I was going to lose by doing away with the sub but as I said do not even notice it gone. These speakers are very impressive! Cheers, Andrew
Sub Sonic Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 G'day Ruffy, I don't suppose you could post any pictures, could you? I've not seen these speakers before! Cheers! SS
Zoo Tv Posted February 10, 2013 Author Posted February 10, 2013 Thanks for your thoughts Ruffy. I presume you are using for stereo duties only? I was lucky enough to be in Adelaide in 2008 and auditioned the DCX-MKII back then. Lovely speaker. Can't wait for the X-35's to arrive..... Would love to see some pictures - I ordered in Tasmanian Blackwood - like Lebowskis old speakers - http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php?/topic/12488-vaf-dcx-gen4-mkii-my-wait-begins/page-3. Will be run with an Emotiva XPA-3, Sony STR-DA2400ES, Apple TV (using iTunes for media player), PS3, WD-TV Live and a Denon CD player. Cannot wait. The receiver will be next to go - probably with a Denon 3313.
emesbee Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Incidentally, I popped into VAF last week in order to get a set of spikes, and briefly asked about the differences between the DCX35 and the previous Gen4MkII version (of which I have a pair). Apparently they have made some changes to the crossover which I was told should improve the high frequency performance. I was also told that they may consider providing an upgrade service for owners of the previous model, but that is by no means definite. No indication of what the upgrade would cost yet, should they decide to offer this.

Ruffy Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Hi Zoo, SS, Photos are forthcoming, I just have to squeeze in some time when the lounge room isn't littered wih toys. The joys of living in a unit with only one living area, one day I will have my own room! They we're bought to excel at music playback but do get used for movies etc and I think they sound a lot better than my old system in this application as well. I wish I had seen the photos of lebowskis set beforehand though; I wasn't a fan of the picture of the tassie blackwood on the vaf website so went the jarrah (my old speakers were Jarrah) however the TB looks amazing! Maybe a set of i-93s in TB in my dedicated stereo room one day...
Ruffy Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Here you go guys, Zoo, this should get you excited! When the wife and daughter leave the DC-Xs migrate out from the wall and get a bit of toe in, then the volume goes North. I am stoked by my first real stereo! Cheers, Andrew 1
peacewise Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Nice pics and speakers, cheers for sharing them.
RockandorRoll Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 that naming plate looks fantastic damn you VAF for not putting it on everything!!! 1
Stump Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Just did a pop in to Vaf for a listen VAF DC-X35.I understand the 35 comes from VAF is 35 years in the business. They sound Great with more detail ,range and bass then the past DC-X.I would be more then happy with a set in my lounge even thou I have the I-66s.Also noticed 2x pairs of VAF DC-X35 at a discount because of a slight bump on one corner and a scratch on the bottom of the other pair although I couldn't see the scratch.A bargain for someone!!! Sub Sonic Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Thanks for the pics Ruffy. It looks like the felt on the drivers has been changed too. I'm sure you'll get many hours of pleasure from them :-) Regards, SS
