Here's the list for the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2012.

I don't listen to JJJ anymore so I don't recognize more than half the stuff on this list, including the #1 (which on first listen is a load of tosh whose popularity must be due to the 'this is f**n awesome' line; a bit of profanity attracts the young 'uns to mediocre music like flies to a sh*t, it's totes adorbs).

As Grampa Simpson would say: I used to be with it, then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn't 'it', and what's 'it' seems weird and scary to me.

I really miss JJJ, the radio here in NE Scotland is dire. I must invest in an Internet Radio so I can return to JJJ that while I would say is not what is was, is still a great station. I know bugger all of those songs :(

Posted

I have most of those on my iPod.

Must admit that age has the better of me. We had this on all day at work and most of it...........hmmmm

3D radio for me.

I can proudly say that there are only about four artists that I know...

Shame JJJ still don;t have Powderfinger to fall back on ... ;)

Some good stuff, but I agree a really kuk number one. I think you could only vote for songs from a specified list of songs on their site? If that's correct its pretty lame.

The list looses some credibility when 23 out of 50 (think I heard this at the half way mark) were from Australian artists. Australian artists probably make up 5% of western pop/rock music and I think it'd be in listener's interests to have about that percentage of local content. I accept that ABC might have some obligation towards domestic industry/artists too and I dont like to complain about things I dont pay for, but I still dont like their parochialism.

I try remind myself that I shouldn't feel entitled to agree with their choice of music as I am pretty far outside of their demographic. I think to some degree one is entitled to be young and dumb when young and dumb.

I think, as a music non partisan, that it was a fair spread. A bit of everything, pop to hiphop, enough to please most tastes. And yes, maybe more Australian content than the norm but that's possibly very refreshing compared to ABCs commercial counterparts and their narrow sighted ways. I listened to the whole countdown and all in all, I thought it was a great way to spend my Australia Day.

I listened to it sporadically throughout the day, missed the top ten. I actually think the No 1 song is decent, a bit of a novelty number and I would prefer One Love from these guys but still it has it's appeal. My two other favorites would be Alt J and the Rubens both of these are excellent. I don't think the youth have messed up too badly here.

THink I might have gone with Major Lazer's Get Free, (love Ambers singing), Alt J's Breazeblocks or Black Keys's Little Black Submarines as my faves.

Triple J is a local station promoting local artists so you would expect a higher percentage in the vote. I think it's fantastic and it helps keep the Australian music scene pumping along. No credibility lost here.

Looking at that, there are only a few names that I recognise. ie: I've heard of some of the names, but I have not listened to their music.

I rarely look at lists like these, because they only cover a limited range of the music around. There are entire genres of music that will never be included on those sort of lists.

Well its fantastic for the Australian music scene, but not for the listener at home if he doesnt spend equal time listening to foreign radio stations. There is a place for community radio (though dont think a national station quite fits this bill), but when on the topic of 'best music' you'd need to acknowledge that tripple j is selling us somewhat short (unless you believe Australian are somehow genetically blessed wrt music talent). Ever hear a South African band on triple J for example?

It's just an online poll. Whatever the 1.3 million voters think. JJJ don't really have a say.

You probably hear as many South African bands on JJJ as you hear Aussie bands on RSA's JJJ-equivalent radio station. When I was last there I heard a disproportionate amount of southern African music. Maybe that's because the music suits the people. Maybe our music suits our people too.

I think it's great that the aussie audience values aussie bands. Especially since a CD is released each year that will mean some income for the aussie bands that get included.

But I'm saying JJJ do have a say, they dictate results by what they choose to play, and further by restricting votes to only what it on their voting list.

I'm not saying South African radio stations are any better, actually they are inexpressibly shitter than triple J and stations like RTR FM Perth.

I dont really buy that there is such a thing as a national taste in countries that grow up on a diet of predominantly British and American rock/pop. If you can articulate what this Australian style might be I'd be interested.

I also question whether its any better that an Australian gets my cd dollars over a South African or anyone else? The cream of Australian music will probably make the same living anyway without the protectionism of government and quota system. The rest perhaps would do best playing at the local club along with all the other bands that don't make Kingsmills cut rather than taking up space on the airwaves in lieu of better bands.

I think you misunderstood me. I said it suits us. Over a million people agree.

'Better bands'? By whose definition, yours? The US market's? Or the Australian market's? They are the ones who voted! There are no better bands in the opinions of the voters.

Only having a casual listen, the Top 100 had an awful amount of commercial sounding tracks? Maybe that's why I listen to public radio like 3RRR and PBS;)

Newman I'm not sure what you envisage by "us" - when you said "Maybe that's because the music suits the people. Maybe our music suits our people too", doesnt this mean you think there is a uniquely Australian style of rock/pop and a uniquely Australian taste amongst Au listeners?

"'Better bands'? By whose definition, yours?"  No not mine. One of my initial points was that if you assume an even spread of musical talent between all musicians everywhere, then statistically, all other things being equal, you'd expect the number of of Australian songs making a meaningful "best of" list to correlate with population size, i.e bands from just the USA alone should have about 13 times more votes than Australian bands.

The point some here are making about the lack of diversity of styles I think is true. I think if the ABC have as their mission the edification of Australia's youth then they perhaps they should have the courage to play some jazz or classical, or god forbid psytrance. Of course the listeners will say they dont like it, but the reason they dont like it is because they arent exposed to it, and because the context within which they do sometimes hear it creates a stigma young people cant get beyond, i.e its not cool to them. Not do deny that 'kids these days' probably dont have the attention span for better forms of music - not helped by the fact that tripple j seldom manages to play a track to its conclusion. I mean if I track is worth playing at all is it not worth letting the artist finish singing before fading to a promo?

I think that Aus can have a unique sound. There is no doubt in my mind that in the 90's when I was frequenting the Melbourne pub gig scene there was a sound that was unique when compared to bands of similar genres from the USA and UK (at least those who were available for me to hear on the radio). Maybe its a patriotism thing, but I love Aus 90's rock. And that's cool, maybe there are better bands from other pays of the world that I haven't heard? The triple J list is not meant to be a worldwide encompassing thing - no best of type list I have seen is.
