Hey Upfront,

Have any more details on the plinth? I'd be very interested in the design, source and price!

Thanks

Exact design is still to be decided. It will be roughly 600x450mm and 60mm-100mm thick depending on how many slabs at 20mm think I can get out of the snooker table top. Cost so far.... $30 for the snooker table. Not sure how successful it will be but I'm willing to give it a go. And if it all goes pear shaped I have a pile of jarrah sat aside.

On your Garrard 301, Pls take a good look at the spindle and bushing on the housing.

It is made and to my surprise crappy Mild steel bushing top and bottom.

Hope your spindle is not badly worn.I have machined mine in Bronze slitter and also in PTFE.

Lots of improvement with PTFE.With less noise and no metal to metal contacts.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

Joseph Lazaroo.

My bearing showed no signs of wear at all. I've cleaned and polished it and reinstalled it. No metal on metal sounds. Just a very nice solid, smooth operation.

Have you replaced the mild steel bearing sleeves?.Get them Bronze sleeve bearing made. You will have the same problem the old

bearing sleeves will wear out the shaft in time.

Shouldn't need too. The bearing is already 50+ years old and in exceptional condition I thought. Ready for at least another 20 years of service at least I would think. If kept well oiled and properly maintained there should be no problems..... and if there is, it would be a good excuse to buy one of these!

All the bits I've bought have been from Loricraft so far. The bearing I think will be a later investment.

Does anyone have any of their up grades? What are they like?

They're a mild upgrade but get yerself one of the Lithuanian ones on eBay, far better than these versions that really are just dressing up the original.

I didn't see a price for that bearing housing, but it looks interesting in that the tighter tolerance brings better bass control, which I think has been an issue for some. Grumpy?

I will look at getting springs, grommets and idler from them in the not-too-distant...

Which upgrades do you refer to?

+1 they are very good. I plan to do a limited review on a few different 301 bearing types i have. I've messed around with different configs of the original bearings (grease and oil) and bearing, sleeve, thrustpad kits and so far it's the non-original, longer spindle types that come out in front.

My bass is fine on the 401 although it has changed with a plinth re-build. Sorry rehab, must be thinking of someone else ?

No worries mate, I remember you making a comment on the bass when you first got your 401 up and running, but I may have mis-interpreted what you said.

This is the Lithuanian bearing

I'm so happy with the sound I bought 7 new records tonight to celebrate! Speed controller is next. Then a new plinth. I'm glad I've used this plinth as a temporary one. I've definitely placed the chassis too far to the left. I originally thought I'd make a 16" arm but I've settled on 12". I'll build a tonearm in time, but at the moment I'm just glad to have a decent player again. I'm truly amazed by the sound. I'm a very happy boy!

When I get this speed controller sorted. Almost done. Actually manager to turn it on tonight, but I'm having trouble changing speeds. Something simple I'm missing I'm sure. I now have the manual so I'm on my way!

Nice work fella. One last piece to the puzzle to go. And then it's slate cutting time! Enjoy the tunes.
