Tama Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Hi all I was donated an old technics 1200 mk2 that was used for spare parts. I wanted to take it somewhere to get it looked at. It still works but I would like to replace/fix # RCA cable and power cord # 4 new feet # general service I would also like to get a new cartridge, would it be ok to buy online and setup myself or should I buy in store and get them to set it up? Cheers Kris
Prana69 Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 (edited) "Speakerbits" Port Melbourne do repairs and servicing of turntables. I've had my Thorens serviced there, some speakers fixed and I have also made ebay purchases from them. The work itself was good. Just be prepared for: Terrible customer service w/ attitude. Possible loss of paperwork. A general sense of disorder. Mon-Fri only. How's that for a back-handed recommendation? Or you can try Peter at Golden Age Audio, who do sales of hi-end turntables and servicing of all. Peter is a SNA member and lives/works out of Keilor. http://www.goldenageaudio.com.au/ Dave BTW: 1. Welcome. 2. Buy the cart and install it yourself. It's cheaper, pretty easy, and a skill you should master if you want to be a "turntablist". Ask around here for recommendations, based on your budget, listening preferences, style of music etc. Edited July 9, 2012 by Prana69
Tama Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 Thanks for the info and welcome, I'll check out those places. A friend at work has just told me that thornbury records give a free quote on TT repairs. I'm currently looking at ortofon 2M red but still looking around.
BloodyCape Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Thanks for the info and welcome, I'll check out those places. A friend at work has just told me that thornbury records give a free quote on TT repairs. I'm currently looking at ortofon 2M red but still looking around. FWIW I've tried a 2M red on an MKII and was getting some pretty terrible sibilance. Went with an Audio Technica 440MLa. The 2M red was great on my Rega though.
Tama Posted July 11, 2012 Author Posted July 11, 2012 Thanks for the advice, I read just read some issues with the red. I think I'm going to get Shure M97xE, it seems to be the most recommended in my price range for my TT.
robin-hobart Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 I got some SL1200 parts from DMC Records. Very happy with price & service. Might be worth looking into. http://stores.ebay.com.au/DMC-DJ-and-Studio-Production-Store/_i.html?_nkw=technics&submit=Search&_sid=856224048

I started after watching Michael Fremer's 21st Century Vinyl DVD (3 times to get my head around!! )
Darryl Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 Installing a cartridge on the SL1200 is pretty easy, predominately because of the detachable headshell. While your looking around for parts, also grab one of these SL1200 cartridge alignment tools. Makes cartridge alignment on this turntable really easy.

Peter from Golden Age Audio has set up a couple of turntables for me over the years and I can highly recomend him. He also does repairs. . 1
ayou2 Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 (edited) JLS Electronics in Doncaster are Technics 1200 / 1210 specialists (they own the Dj Store next door). http://www.jls.net.au/repairs/pro/ They would have done 100's of em. Edited July 11, 2012 by ayou2
Tama Posted July 12, 2012 Author Posted July 12, 2012 Thank all for the advice, I will check out those places I am going to get the Shure M97xE if anyone doesnt have any other recommendations
Asteroid Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 I would highly recommend an Audio Technica MM to suit your price range. Pretty much all of them have been used on the 1200 with success, almost like they were designed for the tt (not out of the question as they're both Japanese). AT95E, AT120E, AT-7V, AT440MLa, AT150-MLX
thornbury records Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 Glad to hear we are being recommended! We can definitely help with the repair, and also the Ortofon cart. 1-2 week wait on quotes/repairs at the moment thought... lot's of repairs to get through.
Tama Posted July 16, 2012 Author Posted July 16, 2012 I was looking to order parts from KAB Electro Acoustics in the US, has anyone had any experience with them recently?
