Anyone tried the upmarket one at RWS? $450 for the degustation dinner. Worth the $$?

Had a feast at Nanbantei (Far East Plaza) last nite

And e smoothest udon I have ever tasted

These only part of what we ate  :P

Quite painful to spend $450....Must be super special occasion. Psychological barrier for me...

$450 is about the right international price, I suppose.

But I guess we are used to getting good food for cheaper.

This is not eating, this is fine dining and the entertainment that goes with it.

But yeah, its a bit painful to spend so much on 1 meal. Usually $100pp or $200pp with wine is ok for a special occasion.

I find something a little more rustic like Absinthe to hit the spot very nicely.

what is the entertainment?  Absinthe is a lot more reasonable, maybe between $50-100 per person without the wine but then can go up quickly dependng on the wine.  m

Entertainment?

He he, the fun of eating food which is novel, interestingly presented, and expensive ;)

For this level, people go out not to eat but to be entertained by their food.

If you are in Nagoya, don't forget to have a go at this delicious Onagi, only 2400 Yen!!..... 8)

now i know why i have taking so much japanese food these days. there are subliminal images found in these forums priming for japanese cuisine ;D

Yup Jimi...Spent $288++ at Restaurant Andre for the sublime experience. But will I go back? Probably not.

Had dinner at Kallang Food Centre (Old Airport Rd) before a hifi listening session. Saw long queue for soya bean!!! Ppl were not just buying 1, more like 10-20  :o. There are 2 stalls in e food centre. Me and wife were so curious we started queueing too. It's pretty unique and very smooth dou hua. Worth a shot... $1.50 a bowl. The 2 stalls only open at 2 time slots - 11.30am and 6.30pm. Once sold out, they close shop. Just to give u an idea - my wife was fifth in e queue and already they sold 100 bowls!!!  :o

This soya bean stall has two or three other "branch", in the same hawker center!!

There are at least three other copycats , in the same hawker centers.

And they are the only one with a queue.  Queue starts before opening hours!

Fruits are really, really ex in Japan...... :o

...but they all look tempting.. :)

Are they really that good? Say compared to eating fruit in (not airfreighted) Mediterranean countries?

Might just be good compared to fruit here which, apart from certain fruit like durian, tastes pretty bad (often sweet but no taste).

I did tried their peaches at 3,000 yen for 7 pieces ($7 each :o), sweet and juicy.  The aroma and fragrance are enough to tempt you!.... ;D

Fruits prices are high because their workers are also paid high salary mah ..  ;)

i was asking some japanese collaborators on why their fruits were so expensive.. they said not all, only gift fruits are expensive, which is something unique to the japanese culture

gift fruits are different from regular fruits, i.e. gift fruits are gifts to people, or offered or sold to overseas visitors etc as a mark of hospitality. it symbolizes prestige, quality etc, and generosity of the giver.

for gift fruits, farmers adhere to strict quality control, i.e. one melon per vine, soil quality controlled, growth is monitored, location of growth is restricted etc,  and they will only put out for sale the best intact fruits, each fruit is treated with care, anything bruised, not so nice, they will consume it themselves or make it into other products, so it adds a "preciousness" or "exoticness" to the product

the 姜汁炖奶 is good!!! had it in Macau

Yup Been going there for many years at Ghim Moh. Also good Char Kway teow if you don't mind queueing. Also the roast duck, siew yoke and char siew there.

Had dinner at Prince Coffee House at 249, Beach Rd. This place has a long tradition and back in e old days, e who's who have eaten here before like Liu Wen Cheng, Ling Ching Hsia etc.  Not fantastic but it's kinda nice seeing all e old photos and I do know some... But my wife knows more  :o

Huh, been working at Beach Road for 20 years and do not know that there is Prince Coffee House there!... :P

Haha, must be blind.... ;D

Still desperately seeking the oyster omelet that was at Clementi Central Hawker Centre before the upgrade. The lady who fried it smoked and drank beer...

Haha, must be blind.... ;D

Uncle there told me he just shifted to Beach Rd abt a month ago. We bought a giant chicken pie for breakfast tmr ($7.50). Hope it's nice with Nespresso haha  ;D

I miss e Old Hokkien food at Beach Rd - Ngoh Hiang, Kong Bah Bao. Anybody know where have they shifted to?
