This morning had a rude shock when a neighbourhood durian seller told me cat mountain king relegated to 3rd position in the last durian competition. Coming in first place is 'Ji Dan Wang' (egg yolk) and then the small seed 'lin feng jiao'. I immediately bought the egg yolk durian. Just finished it all and now posting.

I don't think it deserve as champion. Texture is soft, bitter with sweet aromatic aftertaste. Seed rather big and shell a tad thick (not favourable for weighing). Bought at 12/kg. Whereas my usual Cat Mountain King is still preferred for its small seeds, more defined and consistent taste. I don't get CMK for more than 10/kg, else it is a rip off.

My other favorites are D2 (really difficult to find good ones due to quality inconsistency) but managed to have a good one with Bro Giraffe 3 days ago. Another good one that only comes in small harvests is the 'Kun Bao' which is a failed champion breed. Will get it whenever it comes.

Did you observe more and more CMK selling and in packets?

Supply seems to outstrip supply now. I hope it does not become a situation like D24 - where every planter blatantly plant it, and quality hence suffers thereafter.

msw is largely grafted already, cross pollination also results in fruit variability. many msw on the market tastes creamy, bitter, but lack the intense fragrance, i.e. tasting a little mute in flavour.

many fruits end up in packets because they bring the fruit out from malaysia not fully ripen on tree, only at about 90%. instead it ripens along the way and on the shelf. many end up being unevenly ripe so whatever that is hard or bad is discarded, whatever that is still soft and ok goes into boxes. i've observed this at several reputed places.

Totally agreed with u. I never buy durians in prepacked plastic or foam boxes.

If possible buy the fruit itself or ta bao the durians from the fruit. Best of all, its best to eat them on the spot. :) either from the stalls or freshly dropped from the trees.

Some strange behaviour Ive seen when buying prepacked durians is that some people like to poke at the flesh. I mean, durian is not fish. You got to taste it to find out if its good.

talking about durian, my neighbours love to leave the husks (in bags) at the lift landing even though they dump them into the chute from inside their apt.  I love durian but stale durian smell is a totally diff thing!!! :-[

Bro, no need go Malaysia lah. Yishun got at least 2 neighbourhood fruit stalls selling, usu. $10/kg. Sometimes can get even $8/kg. Unless you buy big volume - no need go through the trouble and time going JB.

Durian sellers - hopefully can be your friends.

Some will SMS you and come to your void deck in pick-ups.

Some will call you when stocks arrive.

But honest sellers are fewer and far between.

Most sellers' intentions are to sell whatever durians they have on hand.

I think sitting and eat on the spot, or simply ask to package from freshly opened fruit are the best ways to filter any uneven riping of the fruit :)

But even so, where there is one chamber of uneven riping - will they allow you an exchange/compensation with another small durian/$discount?

Like to ask fellow Bros here if they know of where the Bugis durian stall had gone to?

This stall was originally in the shop opposite the hawker centre. Then later they operated just outside the hawker centre. During last year's hawker centre reno - they were operating at the carpark near the Bugis MRT exit where the makeshift hawker centre/Chinese dried goods are sold. Now that the renovated hawker centre is back in operation - they are gone!

This is one critical missing link for my durian indulgence and I will be eternally grateful to anyone able to direct me to them.

Yesterday lots of people were praying to ancestors at temples etc for Ching Ming festival. Some came with packet durian as offerings. Whoa - I told my wife - when I die - pls remember to offer me durians during such prayers too! :)

i'm different.. perhaps a little pedantic in my style towards durian purchase :P i rather buy the whole fruits and go home and enjoy. there are tons of durian stalls that i avoid, and some that i go back to despite having to travel half the island for it

i usually prefer to choose the fruits as it comes down the delivery truck, i.e. if at east coast ahloon/ahteck, durians come around three.. if at dempsey road its 3.30pm (msw at 5pm).. if its from 818 trading durians come around 6.30pm.. 717's around 7pm. off the truck if the durian is not ready for eating, i.e. doesnt have the signs of ripening i wont take it.

  • 2 months later...

Couple of days back, tried the durian D17 "Bitter King".

Soft texture, with wrinkled skin.

Oh boy, bitter, tasted like in between of XO and Cat Mountain King durians.

Very good after taste, not sweet.

Known to have small quantities each season. So if have chance, do give a try :)

Yo durianlover i am also looking for that bugis durian seller. Appreciate any updates. ;D

Fully booked throughout  ;D

I called in to book when they said its fully booked and managed to get a table for 2...so I suppose you guys can try your luck :D

After checking with a few durian sellers - seems they are gone for good - no longer selling. I had stayed with them for 19 years, from even before CMK & 666 become famous. Can you imagine when I tell open some durians for me - they told me today durians not suitable for me to eat, they preferred not to open, paiseh...Sigh....

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi durianlover88 any gd durians so far  ;D

Bros,

We are in luck, the big seasonal harvest is in 1 to 1.5 weeks  :D :P

Soon we will have loads of Mau San Wang, D24 on the shelves!

I hope Kun Bao can also join the party.

Currently the harvest mainly centred around D101, D13.

I had done a few rounds of D17 (Bitter King) at $8/kg, and recently XO with shrivelled seeds ($12/kg).

Durian seller at Yishun asked me to temporarily make do with this, as I told him selling D101, D13 by weight is a rip-off  ;)

I training my 5 yr old & 2 yr olds now - they love durians!

The 10 yr old is not fanatic yet.

You know - my long-term plan is when I get older, my kids will eventually buy them for me to makan  ;D ;D

BTW - John in Hougang has fruits now... just got an sms... you go ahead and enjoy... will go again when I am back end March...

John in Hougang Ave 4 has stock again...

Superb! My 5yr old also loves them. Now that they are in season again should try my 1.5yrs old too- think she'd love the texture and making a mess :)

Funnily enough my wife, who used to love them when we were in the UK, has gone off them now that we've come here.

Bros, what are the prices you would pay for:

MSW?

Super D24?

XO?

Kim Hong?

Generally I do not buy when prices is at or exceed $12/kg, unless the craving is too much to bear.

Most of the time $8/kg and occasionally at $10/kg.

Under big seasonal harvest - it is best time to get these durians at $10/kg max or lower.

I love it when there are too many loads to handle by the durian stall owner, and they happen to mix up the occasional D2, Kun Bao in 3 for $10 or 1 for $5 categories. Make sure you can spot them!

Maybe your wife got accustomed to the Thai durians, which are frozen packed or plucked down from trees early.

The Malaysia durians here have much stronger aroma and softer texture.

You might like to let her try Kun Bao if able to buy it - it has some Thai blood in it  :)

Yes, that's right. But her family used to wait til they'd over ripen, almost being sloppy- reminded me of decomposing onions (umm...a memory from my student days  :-[).

I didn't really like it like that. But the local/ Malaysian ones are superb- I don't find them smelly at all- just very fragrant.

Mmmm....today went to see doctor for pre-employment check-up.

BMI 32, 99.8kg @ 40 years old. Quite jia lat, a walking time bomb, although now all indicators are fine.

Gonna cut down on all food (including durians - sob!) and lose weight.

Think got to be even more selective and choosy now for durians. Cannot ga sak all good and bad...

Maybe can only do it like 'gourmet' tasting...

Bros - help me here, if you are with me, and I cannot loon.

Take care of your health too while enjoying your durians...Huat Ah!

i can live without spending too much money on hifi tweaks, but i cannot live without good durian.

my threshold in terms of durian price is flexible, if its really good durian, even 25/kg i'll pay and i'll buy ~10kg at least. but if the durian quality's not up to my mark i wont consider a single bit.
