count me in....

Where to go to get the best durians in Spore?  I always go to Combat at Balestier Road.  The cat mountain last Sat was ...ooo la la.  Very satisfying.

Combat and Sindy (a bit further up the road) are v good.

In fact I've never eaten much durian before and having grownup in an AngMo country just thought they tasted like rotten onions (I know this from my student days :p)

But walking past the above stalls every day and sniffing the smells really turned me to liking them and now I really like them. But I thought the smell was supposed to be offputting and the taste was in the eating, odd isn't it? For me, I don't find it feculent at all, just very fragrant.

Just curious: does anyone think durian tastes better just picked? Or do they travel well?

Most fruits don't travel well and I think are pretty lacklustre in the supermarkets. Take peaches for example, a Mediterranean peach is an amazingly fragrant, juicy and glorious fruit, but if you've never eaten it just after it has been plucked after being allow to ripen on the tree you are missing so much.

Tycoon sends jet to S’pore for durian purchase (the Star)

THE Musang King durian from Malaysia has proven to be so delicious that Stanley Ho, who is Macau’s Gambling King, sent his personal jet to pick up 88 durians from Singapore.

China Press reported that Ho bought about RM4,800 worth of the durian from the 818 Durian Stall in the island republic.

Ho then shared the king of fruits with his friend Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing by giving him 10 durians.

The daily reported that Ho’s worker wanted to buy 98 durians but only managed to get 88 as supply was low due to adverse weather.

In Singapore, the Musang King durian costs about RM38 per kilo, the daily reported.

Hi, can someone share the location of this 818 Durian Stall?

Hey bros

If anyone is keen on a local durian hunt, let me know, say this Saturday or something we can hang out.

Just recommend a good spot - after all we are not all about hi fi alone :)

And if someone know a place in Johor, also let me know. My friends want to do a durian outing during the NDP long weekend, cheers.

New Paper reports that 818 Durian Stall is at 201 Telok Kurau Road.

Huh?  New Paper quotes them as saying they sell at $16 per kg. Already slightly higher than normal.

I was there personally a few days ago & the price puts me off. Am also aware some Balestier & geylang stalls are selling Mou San Wang durians at $22/kg.

try Hock at 91461192 - Bought twice this season. Mao Shang Wang around $12-13/kg while Golden Phoenix around $12/kg. His shop is next to Two Chefs Zi Char at Blk 116 Commonwealth Drive. Found him to be an honest bloke and you can leave your contact so that he will contact you when there is good durians.

Also, just to side track on durians for those who are into durian ice cream, I found the durian ice cream at Majestic Restaurant to be excellent. So far, I have found this to be the best durian ice cream in Singapore. The Majestic branch Jing at Fullerton doesn't do it as well as Majestic.

Bro, what do u think of the Mao Shan Wong ice cream at Udders?

Also the Peramakan (sp?) restaurant at Keppel Club does some pretty good durian puffs (off menu).

Bro, haven't tried Udders. I get my fix of ice cream puff, cakes, etc at tanglin Club. Hmmm must try Udders ;D

To clarify, the durian ice cream at Majestic is fried durian ice cream.

Ah, how is it presented? Frozen with panko flakes on the outside then fried?

Bro, I am still trying to wrap my head around that thought... ;D

Frozen with a very thin layer of flour (I think). Can't quite figure it out but its not the thick layer of flour that you find in other restaurants. They also add a mango sauce on the side. Description here from CNN.

Fried durian ice cream

I’ll admit that eating this dish takes a little bit of courage. After all, to the uninitiated, durian, Singapore’s favorite fruit, smells like old, dirty sweatsocks stuffed with garlic. Nonetheless, Singaporeans are as passionate about their durian as Frenchmen are for stinky cheese. Chef Yong Bing Ngen has created what many consider to be the best durian dessert on the island. The secret behind Chef Yong’s fried durian ice cream is that it’s not really ice cream. Because the flesh of the fruit is so naturally creamy, the talented cook found that if he froze it, then quickly battered it and deep-fried it, the resulting texture was something akin to ice cream. Durian lovers have been known to swoon when tasting this delightful hot and cold dessert.

Curious, sounds quite easy. So the filling is just frozen normal durian. Seems a bit of cheat  :P :P

you will smell real pungent and stinky with or without protection. Hmmmmmm wat protection will you use against a durian man?

Anyway, spare me the smelly details.

;D ;D

Thanks for the recommendation bro vieri, I think both jimi and my other friends all loved it:

Some might return again...

Haha! When did u take that pic?

Was v good to meet and eat.

Veiri's recommendation was spot on. Very good eating and even better pricing- albeit negated by my taxi fare there and back- haha! Balestiers just round the corner from me  :P :P

(And also got back in time to save my stressed wifey from the baby, so the balance in

the love bank is looking pretty healthy :D)
