Some notes on my set up.

Over the last few days, I have been listening to Chinese ballads from the likes of Lui Fong, Wong Faye and Teresa Teng. Now, I don't really understand much Mandarin, and never really appreciated Chinese music before, but I have to say that a decent sound system will make even music you do not like (subject to genre limits, of course) sound good to your ears.

The synergy between the MT40CD and the A55T is coming more into its own now. Our initial gamble in getting a brighter sounding CDP to play with a tube amp through MA RS6s, to be used mostly at lower volumes, appears to be paying dividends at the moment. I hear most of the detail I need to without straining my ears, but also get to feel the bassy hints and airiness that acccompanies the instruments. Quite addictive, actually. I can only imagine how much better it would sound in a few weeks/months time, and (hopefully) with some isolation tweaks and cable upgrades.

Two other listening notes:

First, it would appear that the Chinese songs prefer to be played in the "Triode" mode. On the other hand, English pop music seems to prefer Ultralinear!

Second, the stock 12AX7s (ElectroHarmonix) on the A55T were changed by the previous owner to a pair of Gold-pin Tung Sols which he very kindly passed to me. Last night, I tried listening with the stock ElectroHarmonix and found the music too "forward"or "angular" (I'm finding it hard to find the right description). But when switched back to the Tung sols the sound became rich and smooth again. This, I believe, was the reason why the stock A50T playing with the MT40CDP at Precision sounded so bright.

Will continue to post my impressions once in a while. The next tweak will most probably be a new set of Anticable speaker cables, ordered in the current MO. I hope a brother will swap his 40ft length with my 30 ft length, though; otherwise, I may have to cut uneven lengths for the right and left speakers.

Better not to cut uneven length.... :|

it will affect the sound....

Later u can change your source tube, ie the 12au7 in your cdp. Can get a mullard, can't remember if its cv4003 or 4004. To warm things up slightly for your cdp.

Toying around with the CDP over the weekend, and discovered that one of the screws for the top plate which covers the servo mechanism does not screw on tightly all the way (discovered after taking away the protective plastic wrapper over the glass plate). Have taped the screw down and will take the CDP to Precision to have it checked next weekend.

Also, I could not figure how to change the buffering tube, and will have to ask Ed about it when I bring the CDP there.

I should point out that the brand of the CDP has been erroneously stated as Cayin until now. The brand,as they appear in the box, manual etc, is "Spark Audio"; however, they are made by the same company. I believe that this brand is used more for the Greater China market rather than Europe where Cayin is already well established.

P>S> My set-up is coming up to the 2 month mark, will update on the SQ development shortly.

Let us know what Ed advised...

In my last post I alluded to a loose screw in my CDP. Well, I sent to Precision and got a new CDP. Now, that's service for you! Only trouble now is that I will need to run it in again. Thankfully, CDPs are easier to run in than speakers!

Heh, bro, YES..... I am referring to you!!!! (in part la)

Seriously though, CDP very easy, just put in a disk and "Repeat". No need separate rooms, out-of phase, duvets,  etc.

No leh. He mentioned its quite difficult to change the tube. So I think next time I will bring my CDP down if I want to change tube. But anyway, I kinda like the sound of my CDP playing thru my amp.

you mean now u prefer the stock tubes better than the other tubes... well good for u then...no need to change liao hehe

Glad u r back up and running.

Bought some cheap tweaks today - O rings from preamp tubes, a dollar a piece. Helps to damp away microphonics. I don't think I have any trouble in tat dept but wth, just try lor since doesn't cost a finger.

(Slip on 2 rubber rings over each tube, looks cute man)

Hi hobbeslow,

Yes. I am planning to get the same set of speakers but with a Denon AVR 2309.

I am also thinking of getting from the current SVS MO - the PC12-NSD that you just received.

What do you think of the new sub with your system and how big is your HT area?

Any Pic of the sub with the speakers?

Need some help to persuade my wife that having 3 blocks in the living room will look nice :)

I will try to update the pics this weekend. Dunno why the exitsing pics linked to the first post does not show.

I'll also do some testing this weekend and let you know how the sub works with the rest of the MA speakers.

I'm using a friend's old (but good) Marantz 8200 (7 years old). I've auditioned the 2309 before and  don't think the 2309 will have any matching problems for the speakers or sub. However, I don't use the AVR to listen to music - I have a dedicated tube amp for stereo - so I cannot really comment on SQ for stereo.

Hi!

before i got my dedicated system for music listening, i was using an AVR to drive a bookshelf speaker with a dvdp. to my surprise, it sounded good to me. of course after getting my new system, just cannot compare both lor. definately more musical and sounds better  ;D. even when using an AVR, i hv 2 set of speaker connected to Channel A & B. A for HT and B for music. So i totally seperate them for different usage.

Glad u r back up and running.

Any pic to show? I suppose these o-rings can take the heat from the tubes.

Thanks!

Will take a pic. So far so good. However, if u have very exp tubes that u wish u sell later, I'd advise agst it. Reason that I think it may remove your tube chalk markings.
