Is an SNA tutorial page a good idea?

Featured Replies

Being a bit of a duffer is no fun really.

You'd think after 13 years of being a member of Stereonet I'd be pretty clued-up as to how to do stuff, but no, not at all. I got flummoxed yet again with a how do I do this on Stereonet and started looking through posts and threads to find out and found this that had no decent reply....... (my bold)

...does anyone know how to reference/quote within a post from previous pages? or even quote from a different thread?

@Marc - previously there was some "auto save" going on, and clicking in the "Reply to This Topic" box would bring back the text previously written - not tonight - I lost a bunch of content I had to re-type.

Maybe I just don't know how to drive SNA properly, but often I'll be in the middle of a post and want to quote from previous pages of the same thread, or quote from different threads, but can't work out how.

So I thought, I'm obviously not alone here, I wonder how many others would like a bit of assistance, a bit of a clue as to how to operate the handier functions that duffers just don't have the knowledge of.

A tutorial / reference thread would be great! A lexicon for those who don't know the in's and out's of a dogs behind as so many more enlightened SNA'ers do. Examples of how to's? :-

How to - link to previous threads / posts

- ^ - - ^ - award sellers positive points (or negative)

- ^ - - ^ - re-size photo's.

- ^ - - ^ - use Stereonet app.

- ^ - - ^ - re-list an ad

- ^ - - ^ - search for old / very old threads/PM's (how far back does the search function go . Not so far for me (unless I just don't know how to))

- ^ - - ^ - do even the simple stuff for beginners / newbies. Like PM's or insert images to posts.

Not saying I can't do all of those but I'll bet there's heaps of functions I don't even know of, never mind how to use them. I bet others have good suggestions as to what should be on there too.

Dumb idea? Muddle through as always? Join the 21st century?

dont think a dumb idea... if its not totally intuitive to you...probably isnt to others as well. some this stuff does change though... unfortunate nature of online stuff the basis changes and then how its done folks tend to have to figure out again... !

As a starter Grimmie... why dont you have a go at a couple of things you struggled with... but figured out how to do ? it might spur folks on to follow suit ?

just keep it simple in steps perhaps ?

I'll give a go to this one here...

best thing is to do is select text want to quote do this with highlighting text in question with your mouse or pointer.... a quote button will come up ... hit that...

this will put a quote box in your reply as I did for your quote above ... then move mouse to the box quoted hit mouse on it then in your browser select copy...now go into anywhere else in the forum place your mouse in a reply and hit paste... there the box below re appears ... done...

does it make sense ? give it a try...

Thanks @betty boop Sorry, I didn't explain my problem adequately. I'm OK with simple quoting etc. it's actually producing a link to threads that can be clicked on to switch to that previous thread or post. Especially when they have a one-word link that's underlined as in Hyperlink.

Fair enough, one method of re-sizing that I use is to take the picture (say, emailed from my phone then saved to desktop) I open the picture and click 'paint' then reduce from 100% (pixels) to 20 / 25% then save to desktop and drag into the - "Drag files here to attach, or choose files...
Accepted file types pdf, jpg, gif, png, jpeg · Max total size 948.49MB - box below. It reduces them from screen filling Mb's to a few Kb's. Wonder if there's a way to do it within SNA?

Basically I wonder if a list of methodologies similar to this could be posted as a lead Opening Post, then questions raised and answered in the OP to create a library of suggestions. Our own Mini-Wiki. if you like.

wouldn't worry about doing this :) forum sorts out the reducing :) just select the file

two ways ... click on the < symbol below on the black header on any post

Screen Shot 2020-07-23 at 8.19.22 pm.png

will then see the below pop up....

Screen Shot 2020-07-23 at 8.20.34 pm.png

select the blue highlighted thing and use that as a link to that post anywhere

if you want to put it in as a hyperlink, click the link button in the menu bar of your post

Screen Shot 2020-07-23 at 8.21.37 pm.png

and the box below will come up where can pop a link(address) in and any text you like eg "my link"

Screen Shot 2020-07-23 at 8.22.41 pm.png

hit insert into post and will come up as "my link" and linking to what ever you want it to link to...

hope helps...

Perfect, thanks again @betty boop I still think a reference / tutorial page full of this stuff would be a great asset. Maybe most others are wiser than me, actually, that's a certainty.

think a good idea and its kind of thing easily done if folk chip in...

but yeah if no one cares or does...that in itself tells something :D

I'd love for it to exist, but I just don't have the time to create such a resource unfortunately. As @betty boop suggest, one of the other problems is that as the software evolves, many processes change or become redundant.

  • 2 months later...

Another drawback of the investment to a project of this size would be that I would expect many people wouldn't bother to read it.

(I'm not against this happening though)
