DirkDirkin Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Hi, I'm a fairly new here and am curious about something Is there a difference in the sound quality of BluRay compared to DVD...... The reason I am asking is I use my Panasonic DMR-EH59 DVD recorder (hooked up to an Arcam Alpha amp and Wharfedale 9.1's) as a source for all my audio (CD,mp3) Many thanks for any input
Draken Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Hey DirkDirkin, In terms of Movies the simple answer here is HELL YES. Ofcourse your'll need an amp that either has HDMI inputs in the form of a repeater, or have atleast 5.1 channel analogue inputs to hear it but yes there most definately is a difference. As for CD playback this depends on the player for example the new Sony BDP-S370 is said to have pretty good CD playback as well as being a leading player for every other aspect in that price point. I would also reccomend the Panasonic players BD65 BD85 e.t.c but they are a little more expensive.

Just like dial up vs broadband. Also I can personally vouch for the Panasonic DMP-BD85 and Blu Ray playback a stunning player.
thepersuasions Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 is that sony bdp s370 a multizone player?
bizzar Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Yes, a huge difference in the sound in BD compared to DVD, that is if you have the gear to hear the difference. I use the 5.1 out of the BD80 Panny player into a Rotel RSP1068 and then into the power aps etc, the sound is, well big, dynamic, large from top to bottom of the soundstage, as well as side to side, if your gonna crank it up, beware of bottoming out your bass drivers. Discs to shine on BD have been - MJ "This is it", Yes "Live at Montreax, The big O "Black & White Night", amongst others, and many a movie too. Happy New Year. Cheers.

kat Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Hi Do you mean DVD video with 5.1 audio or DVD-Audio. Blueray is definitely superior to DVD videos, in terms of picture and sound but compared to 5.1 DVD-Audio disks (and 5.1 SACD) I would say they would be on a par with the audio depending on the production values. kat Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Further to my message above, have a look at: http://hometheaterreview.com/movie-studios-are-thinking-of-asking-consumers-what-blu-ray-to-put-out-next/ http://hometheaterreview.com/an-open-letter-to-audiophile-record-labels-about-blu-ray-for-music/ KAT
wapfu Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Blu-ray has an audio red book not fully utillised by record companies. The only manufacturer of blu-ray only music is a Norwegian record company - check Hifi world article. It's music only senario has not been pursued so its out there waiting to be tapped. DVD-A , dvd audio has all but gone whilst SACD continues. Full uncompressed DVD-A rivals vinyl - a few titles were produced in two channel 192/24 bit - i robot by Allen parsons being one. Yes the DTS Master audio and Dolby equal, are fantastic tracks on a Blu-ray and punish CD.
