I bought a Panasonic BD85 recently and it's quite the business. Excellent picture quality and stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 analogue outputs. I haven't tried the analogue outputs but reviews seem to rate them.

Perhaps not in the league as an Oppo but at $440 - with wireless network dongle for BDLive, internet (via Panasonic's Viera Cast) and home networking as well which has proved quite cool - it's MUCH cheaper.

Reasonable loading times too - not DVD fast, but quicker than my "old" BD30 and it has a quick start 0.5sec option albeit using more power in standby...

From what I've read, it's better than it's direct competition.

Hi everyone, my first post on this here forum, so be gentle ;-)

Just a quick question for johnnyrs, where in Auckland did you pick up the Panny BD85 for $440?

I've been looking around but they're pretty sparse and I can't find one for under the RRP of $550.

Hey if anyone is interested and what a cheaper option, I have a Sony bdp-S550 on trademe which is only 4 -5 months old which has the mulit-channel analog outputs. It isn't as good as the oppo, but is significantly cheaper.

A word of warnng about using the multi-channels in though. I originally went with the option (hence the player) and found my amplifier did not really handle the bass well even though it had the +10db setting. I couldn't get the bass right with the sub for listening to music, vs watching movies on the blu-ray. Just my experience, but I have replaced the amp with a pioneer lx series amp and it is much better (though significantly more expensive).

I was going to go with the oppo for the 6 channels out but glad I didn't spend the extra money.

Hi Mate, The Appliance Shed had them for that price over Queen's Birthday weekend, but a friend of mine asked for a discount a week later and they matched the $440.

I did spy the new Sony wireless Bluray player (S370?) for less than $400 in JBHiFi today and that's pretty rated - don't know if it does analalogue out but its loading times are supposed to be pretty special.

Just a quick one a mate has just bought a bd 85 and is there any were to change levels etc in the menu ?

I guess you mean speaker levels? I haven't got mine in front of me but, iirc, to change the speaker levels you go into setup then audio connections and select the 5.1 or 7.1 configurations. The levels and delays are then set for each speaker and the option is there to use a test tone to check your settings.

That's pretty much it. Page 30 of the manual that can be downloaded from the BD85 page of Panasonic NZ website if you want to have a look yourself bluedog.

Check page 29 too. If his only video connection is via HDMI then turn 'high clarity sound' on. Usual recommendation is also to turn 'secondary audio' off.

Cheers, B :)

Gidday bluedog,

Yep, not the best GUI

High Clarity sound should work for analogue audio. What it does is disable the analogue video outputs.

Just tried the audio test on my BD80, also no test tone for the sub. Not sure why, but I've never found test tones very effective for setting sub levels anyway. Better to leave the player (or processor) on zero and adjust 'by ear' using the subs volume control IME. Have you figured out how to compensate for the analogue sub output being 10db lower than digital outputs?

Cheers, B :)

so does your BD80 just skip the sub as well or just not put out a signal? this one is just skipping it compleatly :o hopefully yanky5 will be able to ask directly soon :D

Skips over the sub completely.

He may have more success using a setup disk. If he doesn't want to buy/borrow one, I just use THX Optimiser found on many DVD's (I use Nemo). Like many people I run the sub 'hot' for movies, around 5-10db higher than the other channels (hence my comment you're probably better to adjust by ear).

Has he connected a digital cable as well? Usually best to play DVD's using digital coax, with 5.1 analogue for Bluray only. If so, run the test tones for both outputs to ensure sub level is correct for both i.e. the -10db analogue sub issue has been dealt with.

Cheers, B :)

Hi,

Those that are using multi chan analog out, when setting levels using JPK disc, the sub LFE level is 12db to 13db lower in level(THAN IT SHOULD BE) ie when setting levels for ref 75db all channels the LFE should be set 75db - 13db = 62db other channel 75db.F,C,R ETC.

You will find that some movies LFE will still need to be adjusted down, even though strict guidelines for movie sound mixes.Depending on crossover freq and number of small speakers selected.

Cheers Victor.

Hi Wolfman

I have the same speaker / sub setup as you & looking at the DB85 or Marantz BD7004, have been using PS3 for BR and wondering did you notice a big step up in sound with the DB85 via analogue over the PS3 ?

I am no 'audiophile' :P but to my ears it was a big step up in sound quality. (Once I sorted the sub levels)
