Mine gave up on me years ago although sometimes the look and unsaid words

speak volumes. Guilt is my friend.

I'd like another cdp,Really need two now) a new rack, new speaker cables, bigger room, better phono stage and cartridge, Grado PS1000s, Sennheiser HD800s and the biggest, best sounding headphone amp the world has ever seen, custom built to my specs.

Not much really..

Dont buy a cheap one !! Guitars are like good HiFi, good stuff costs a bit more but sounds better and lasts longer. Excellent resale value too !!

So then - What would you recommend for my daughter, she wants a guitar for xmas, but I don't see the point in spending a lot of $$$ for an adolescent who wants and wants and wants, at the same time I do wish to foster her urge to create. Currently thinking about what I can find 2nd hand locally....

I'd say a Fender Strat Squier. Easy to get a really good one second hand for under $200. They sound good, have nice action and build quality and, if you do go second hand you lose no money.

That is a good beginner electric. The Yamaha Pacifica is good too. Epiphone offers good entry level models also(but the range is quite confusing).

The real question is does she want an electric or an acoustic (or something in between)? With the models above you will need an amp. Yamaha make some nice upper-entry level acoustics (worth paying that bit extra IMO too)

Why not wish for the 16 or 32gb iTouch, then you get voice control.

8gb will do me just fine - voice control doesnt do much for me but an SPL meter app would be cool. Are you sure the 16gb has a microphone? (although for the difference in price I could get an SPL meter probably! :D)

Pretty hard to go past a Yamaha acoustic as a first guitar. However dont get an F310P, they are the real entry level one, often available second hand. I'd tend to look at one of the FG models, new you'll fingd them on sale at the moment, second hand have a look on TM. Harmony Central for the reviews, but bear in mind the reviews can't tell you what they are like to play.

The other thing to bear in mind is that the FG's are all dreadnaughts. your daughter may prefer a smaller bodied guitar. There's a Yamaha FS on TM at present (not mine, dont know the seller), a little bit pricey, but they dont seem to be commonly available here. The Takamines from Rockshop aren't a bad buy either as an electric acoustic, but probably outside your budget ?

In general stay away from Fender acoustics, Yamahas have excellent resale.

Any queries shoot me a PM, happy to advise.

Cheers.

She is adamant that it be electric...

I don't know what has spurred this thought, maybe that school rockquest thingy, maybe me thrashing the White Stripes, dunno, but its better than dating boys, or is it a way to get boys?

Women with guitars:

Suzie Quatro

P J Harvey

I've bumped up a thread in the Trademe Auctions section of the forum that has a bit of advice in it.
