I think after these bass escapades its time to upgrade the rattley 50cent woofers in the car... Attached files
steverb Posted December 16, 2003 Posted December 16, 2003 What are the lab12 speakers going to cost?? Where from & what the freight charge?? Im tempted to get a pair. (It cost me $80 in freight just for 2 tweeters from the USA)
Toxicbass Posted December 16, 2003 Author Posted December 16, 2003 330$ ea.i was quoted that from a guy in Oz. also apparently theres an eminence Distributor in auckland. 'livesound' Also a word of warning.Do not try basshorn in a car, unless you want to survive with your hearing intact I treid it today, 20watts into the 8" 40hz horn.. OUCH ,car was resonating. proly 120db+...i can only guess.. loud midbass. the 30hz horn wont fit tho..ears are ringing i could hear 16khz tone for awhile  it seemed similar SPL to my mates car,who scored 130db recently.. It cost me $80 in freight just for 2 you have to go with the 5month people who take ages, its risky too.

Totally wow man, I've got to try this! Did you have any boot space left? Careful you don't stiffen up your eardrums, and start begging for more bass (from lack of hearing) like the rest of 'em . I've read that people don't really trust "ship" based shipping from the US due to too many bad experiences. Hence the explosion in popularity of all those fast courier companies. Lech
Toxicbass Posted December 17, 2003 Author Posted December 17, 2003 I was suprised, most brainy ppl who know about horns were skeptical that it would work. i treid to not be excited so i would be let down, when i turn it on and wonder if its on LOL..but noo.. Did you have any boot space left? a little,on the sides from the very back of the boot to the wheel arches ,and about 10cm either side of the horn. I faced mouth back,it seemed just the same forwards anyway. doors open or closed,no real diff to my ears! 143L horn the 30hz wont fit -320Litres! its nice though.should highpass iflter it near 40hz to prevent the unloading-which with a 3.5mm 8" driver ,yes it does distort with about 7mm excursion at 40hz,and Less below that. im not called 'toxicbass' for nothing:p
jmarshall Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 I got an Adire DPL12 shipped from the US last year, direct from Adire and it cost around US$40 for shipping. This is the slow method - took around 4 months to arrive, but arrived in fine shape. Next time, I'd ship it economy air for sure - the money saved is no worth the long wait, unless you aren't going to be using the driver straight away (this was my situation - I had the amp to build). Lab Horn 12's will likely be a similar weight to the DPL12 (they're a fairly similar driver). Cheers, Jonathan
Toxicbass Posted December 20, 2003 Author Posted December 20, 2003 ouch ,expensive and long time! i gota order SPL meter from tandy , *finds dad with his credit cards at the ready*
Lech1553552674 Posted January 6, 2004 Posted January 6, 2004 Hi Toxicbass, I was looking through some of your sub horn pics and noticed on one of the pics that you're modelling the woofers into "0.5 x pi" space, steradians or whatever. Doesn't that mean that the response curves will only be accurate in the corner of a solid room? Surely the calculations would be different for optimal performance in an open floor-plan/middle-of-room that would closer to 2pi steradians? Lech
Toxicbass Posted January 6, 2004 Author Posted January 6, 2004 Doesn't that mean that the response curves will only be accurate in the corner of a solid room? yes. Surely the calculations would be different for optimal performance in an open floor-plan/middle-of-room that would closer to 2pi steradians? probably 1pi as bass frequencies are much longer than the listening room. Notice how my horn lives in the corner, ut comes out of the corner only for pics non corner horns require HUGE mouth area:)
Grummer Posted January 6, 2004 Posted January 6, 2004 cool ! saw your pics, - i wouldn't mind that to replace my dead worn out 5.1 sub for the computer! lmao....it'd make the games a real blast.....
