miata Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Time to think about the next upgrade and start saving! http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/4k-bluray-201309123318.htm
Tweet Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 The 4K pipe dream will go nowhere without bountiful software to drive it. Much like HD DVD didn't go anywhere because local retailers wouldn't stock the movie software and it was much too expensive to compete against DVD. Look how long it took Blu-ray to become mainstream, and still DVD is there reaping profits. Ten years at least before 4K is commonplace unless it comes on a100G USB 3 thumb drive to avoid all the disc player compatibility problems we have seen in the past. As 4K will be an expensive movie format to buy into, using a 100G USB 3 thumb drive + 'the movie' will be cheaper to manufacture and sell then going through the developmental stages of equipment design etc of players (and stamping machines) and then trying to flog that off to consumers. Why not design a 4K TV that can read 100G USB 3 thumb drives (and HDD drives) using the 4K movie format, this would curtail a lot of marketing woes and compatibilty issues. C.M
cwt Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 The 4k marketing push is ramping up 1st step get the hdmi2.0 chips out as quick as possible [prevarication has been going on for ever] while ignoring what Joe Kane and others wanted - 4K/60p/4:4:4/16-bit color . 2nd step - making the discs bigger so they don't have to change the codec from h264 to better compression h265 and still upsell the player that isn't compatible with bdxl 3. Chuck a pc drive that is compatible like a pioneer bdrx04 into a standalone player and sell the new player ... something like this - http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/22/sharps-ultraslim-bd-av70-blu-ray-bdxl-player-hitting-japan-so/
sero Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I disagree chickenman. Bluray is already established and its just a spin off from that, there isnt a competing format this time around. Its just a change in hdmi spec. 1.4 - 2.0. I already have a bdxl bluray burner in my htpc, from that review it looks like i just need a firmware update and the blank media and im good to go. No doubt it will take time for people to upgrade there tv/projector and avrs. I wont rush out to upgrade because personally i don't see the point. But when i need a new tv new amp and new bluray player no doubt it will all be 2.0 /4K and its not like we will have a choice in the matter

Highjinx Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Agree, disks are the cheapest way to distribute 4K till 'acceptable' download speeds are achieved.....a few more years I'd say.
