MrC Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Hi all ... I have had great service from the Toppy HD set top box for years now ! Recently after watching for say 30 minutes the box decides not to output anything (no sound or video) ... my receiver tells me that there is no signal coming from the Toppy .... Turn the Toppy off and then turn it on fixes it !! It is as if something is overheating and by turning it off allows it to cool. There is nothing to indicate that anything is wrong ... no error messages ... nothing really hot about the unit .... it just seems to be running out of puff. Does anyone know what this might be ?!? Me thinks it might be time to buy a new PVR .....
Rex Nebular Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 (edited) Some capacitors have probably gone bad but that's my first guess for most electronics that start acting unreliable. Edited November 25, 2012 by Rex Nebular

GSpot Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Disclaimer: I know nu-thing. Power supply would be my first guess, but not based on electronics knowledge, of which I have bugger all. The most common faults with Toppies and Wizzs appears to be, hard drive failure, main board fault or the power supply. Often one seems to take out another. I think the earlier generations were designed with insufficient cooling, and the power supply was often the first to feel the heat. They're actually not expensive to repair, and easy if you have the skills. I reckon these things can last a long time if ya willing to replace the PSU or HDD etc as they fail. There isn't much more in them to go wrong.
miata Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Whenever mine starts to get "flaky" I do a Factory Reset" and re-install the firmware. I went through a period where it wouldn't respond to the remote control at all but at the moment (touch wood) it's performing admirably. If I were to replace it, I would probably choose a 7160 for the ability to record four programs (from two streams) at once.
MrC Posted November 26, 2012 Author Posted November 26, 2012 Thanks guys for your help. It did it again last night ... after watching for 40 minutes it again output nothing - no sound no picture.
