mabster Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 I've found that with standard DVD play on my BD35 I get some nasty pixelation at times. If there's a small area of the screen moving (eg a large landscape shot with people moving) then the moving area will degrade into visible horizontal lines. It's more noticeable on some DVDs than others, but it's very off-putting. Is this something anyone else has noticed? Anything I can try to stop it from happening? Blu-rays seem to be fine - haven't noticed the effect on any of my BDs.
Guest Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Cool, nice to know it's not a faulty player. Haven't tried a standard DVD on it yet, will let you know if I have the same pixelation issues.

What is the format negotiated, 1080I, 1080P Not sure I have anything of value to add, but it might give someone a pointer. Edited April 13, 2009 by Grampus

I should give 720P a try to see if it's any better I guess. (Blu-ray runs at 1080P obviously.)
broadbean Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Could the BD35 not upscale DVD to 1080p? If so, why not leave it at that rather than 1080i?
mabster Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 No, for standard DVDs the BD35 automatically selects 1080i. I remember reading a trick earlier in this thread to force it to 1080P, but from memory it was a "once per disc" thing. I'll have to read back and find it. I just had a look at the setup menu to see if there's a way to force standard DVDs back to 720P rather than 1080i, but if there is, I can't find it.

If you are using hdmi the pana does upscale std dvd'd to 1080p,you have a setting wrong mabster
mabster Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 If you are using hdmi the pana does upscale std dvd'd to 1080p,you have a setting wrong mabster Weird. When playing BDs the TV reports 1080P, but when playing DVDs it only ever shows 1080i. Any idea which setting is wrong? Note that the Pioneer 507 only supports 1080P/24 - maybe the player isn't upscaling because it's detecting that the display device doesn't support 1080P/50.

In the "tv/device connection",press ok on HDMI connection, then go "hdmi video mode ' to "on" then hdmi resolution to "auto" and "24p output" to "on". If that dosent work set hdmi resolution to 1080p instead of auto.

Yep, that's how it has always been set up. If that dosent work set hdmi resolution to 1080p instead of auto. Nope, that doesn't work. Forcing it to 1080p switches it to 1080p/50 in the menus etc. I tried that once and had to reset the player because I lost all video. The Pio 507 only supports 1080p/24.
mabster Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Hmmm sorry mate out of suggestions. That's ok - thanks for trying. I really just wanted to see if others have seen similar artefacts during DVD play.
broadbean Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Might be easier to list the DVD titles that consistently give you problems so others could try. I assume you are on the latest firmware?

No, I'm not on the latest firmware. That'll be the next thing I'll try. Titles ... the most recent one was The Princess Bride R4.

Movie based DVD's are fine. Thanks, Texass44. It's good to finally learn the name for the effect ('combing')! Now I can search for that, and find comments like this from AVSForum: Has no one else noticed that the 55 has issues with combing on some videos? It was pretty bad in a few scenes from Dexter, episode 4, about 3 minutes in. I also saw the problem on a couple trailers, one for the new John Cusack movie. If I change the video output to "video" instead of "auto" in the BD-55 display settings I can make it disappear, but goes back to "auto" when I change discs. My Oppo 970 plays the Dexter episode just fine. Source: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread....90#post15140090 Seems that both the 55 and 35 have this problem. I'll definitely try your solution (though it's only movie-based DVDs that I've seen this effect on). Will the setting affect BD playback at all? Edited April 13, 2009 by mabster
dat1503561652 Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 I'm not sure if this has been mentioned. When watching 4x3 material with the BD35, the letf & right curtains are back to grey despite I have change the setting of my Kuro TV to make them black long time ago.. Same DVD playing on Tosh HD player or Pioneer recorder is fine. The Grey must come from the BD35, have tried the all setting options on the DB35 but no luck! Is there anyway to set it to black? Thanks
pbouzaid Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 I would love to know the answer to this too. My Pioneer Kuro 508XDA also displays the grey bars which is quite distracting. Hopefully someone has an answer to this.
selze Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Set screen saver to off on the BD35. had me going for about 20 minutes when I first got mine. Strange thing to call it.

broadbean Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 If anyone in Sydney is still interested in getting a BD35, rather than a BD60/BD80, The Good Guys Bankstown has two or three for $299 each.
