Greebs Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Dealer discretion maybe the intention, but I think the australia yamaha website is pretty clear."RX-V3800Bi Digital Home Theatre Receiver with iPod dock RRP: $2,499" I'll admit I'm no lawyer but I'm pretty sure NSW fair trading would see this a pretty black and white. Does the box (or your receipt) say RX-V3800Bi or RX-V3800B ? I'm going to imagine that the "i" stands for iPod dock. Agree with others though that it all comes down to your relationship with your dealer.
hysteric2006 Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 The extra $500 buy's you video out on the second zone but most of all, if you have speakers capable of resolving the difference, the 3800 sounds way more musical and dynamic than the 1800. Using Paradigm Studio 100's the difference is marked. After all, isn't sound the ultimate aim? [/quote That is true, but arent the specs exactly the same except the 10 watt difference as far as audio/video quality is concerned?? they are using all the same chipsets and Dsp's so it couldnt be a drastic change in sound could it ??? im not arguing more so inquiring as i am in the market and am looking at both receivers.

You misunderstand what Im saying. The iPod docks were meant to be an incentive for dealers to order stock, not necessarily given out as free. It IS up the dealer. But as has been rightly pointed out, Yamaha have this printed on their site (by mistake), so really, there's no escape clause for the dealer unless Yamaha pull the line from the site. So to answer the question, dazbug is entitled to an iPod dock.
T800 Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 (edited) IPOD DOCK Update Went to my dealer today and got the ipod dock, it was just his sales assistant friend who helps out every now and then just forgot about it, and was sitting under the counter for me, so all is good :) btw, I rang Yamaha before i went there just incase, and they said every 3800 comes with an ipod dock. So for the price i go, I couldnt be more happier Now I cant wait to set this baby up on the weekend. MarkH, how did you go with your 2388, as last i read you went through 2 and had some problems? T800 Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 Howdy all,Like others i am a newby to this forum and am looking for some technical assistance I am currently looking at replacing my Yammy RX-V757 due to it not having HDMI capability. My current system comprises Hitachi P50X01 panel, Panasonic DMR-EX75 DVD-R and Klipsch Reference 35's and thus need the hdmi to link panel and dvd. Like others i am tossing up the relative merits of the 861, 1800, 3800's. From reading most posts there is a strong leaning toward the 3800. If i went this way is it likely to over power the Klipsch's - 8ohm 125watt? Or am i better off sticking with the lower powered 1800 or 861? Or is this not important?? Can someone also suggest a good retailer in Melbourne, the previous unit came from Encel's but i don;t believe they stock Yamaha anymore. Thanks Get your post count up and pm me and ill give you the details on where to get it for under $2000 in Melb

Ah thats great news dazbug There is not a lot finer than spending some quality time re-wiring and installing new AV equipment! (well what ever rocks your boat, I say) Sounds like you have found yourself a good dealer in melb. Cheers, Whitehawk

Guest Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 daz, Im currently on unit #3, still testing at home. So far everything seems fine. From my testing it appears there was a problem on the other two units' LSI (that look after the DD, DTS side of things). Of oucrse I cant confirm that without opening the units up, which Im not prepared to do! (despite my curiosity, being an electronics engineer 'n' all!)
shmando Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 MarkH this is specifically directed to you, as you previously owned a 2700 and have upgraded, but others are free to comment. I have found a couple of places doing clearance deals on the 2700 for around the $1500 mark. Given audio wise they are identical (as far as i can tell going through the spec sheets) is it worth shelling out up to another grand for the latest and greatest? I have no need for the networking feature and don't really need 4xhdmi's. The only other spec that is appealing is the 1080p up conversion as i haven't yet invested in any HD source. Althought the 2700 will upscale to 1080i and i'm buggered if i can tell the difference. My need for a new avr is to run hdmi, obviously hdmi v1.3 will help future proof and enable the use of higher grade audio. But do i loose that much if i go for v1.2? Is there anything else i should consider?? The extra grand would go a long way to replacing my centre channel with a nice new kilpsch RC 64......

Mate if you can get a 2700 for that price, snap it up! Even at $500 saving the 2700 is the preferred unit in my opinion. This is a class beating receiver at $2500 - at $1500 its a steal. You can still feed in HD audio in via your player of choice (gets converted to PCM before being sent down the HDMI cable).
T800 Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 Finally got around to setting up my 3800 yesterday, except for the rear 2 speakers. Searched 10 stores to try and find rear speaker stands (other than those for mini speakers) which turned out to be harder than i thought. No one stocks them, so will go off to my dealer tomo and see what he has. I love the Ipod dock controlling the ipod via the 3800 remote is awesome, i just havent worked out how to see the song list on the onscreen GUI.? Only other problem i had in setting it up was connecting the component from the xbox360 to the 'comp in' and trying to watch it via hdmi. with the 360 switch set to 'hdtv' i got no pic, but when i flicked that switch the other way, got a pic but at 480p. After mucking around and no success, i just sent the 360 directly to the tv. I didnt have the patience to continue mucking around with it. PS3 1080p/24 passed through fine and looked spectacular. And for the first time I got to hear PCM on my set up. WOW, sounded fantastic. once i get my rear speaker stands, I can fully set up my room and give the 3800 a workout. I'll add some impressions in about a week once i get off nightshift. So far, the 3800 with my klipsch sounded perfect to my ears. Great combo and great receiver.
Guest Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 daz, Check your video ouput setting on the 360 - if its set too 1080p it wont show up. It appears the component inputs on the 3800 cant accept 1080p. I have my 360 connected and outputting 720p into the receiver.

Hi Daz, for the ipod dock issue, once its all hooked up and showing ipod dock on the front of the receiver I had to press the 'display' button on the remote for the onscreen GUI to show up. (The display on the ipod itself should change to the yamaha logo). (I also have the 3800 outputing to my plasma via HDMI) Cheers, Whitehawk

hysteric2006 Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 so are any of you guys going to give us a bit of a review??
Whitehawk Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 so are any of you guys going to give us a bit of a review?? Its SH!T hot. I love it! Would recommend it to anyone. Well thats a bit crass, sorry about that. I'd love to give it a review but I haven't has much of an opportunity to crank it up yet. (my 2 year wont let me get Nick Jr or Display playhouse off the TV yet). I also haven't had to chance to get to run the YPAO speaker tuning which I am really keen to do. Having said that I have posted some comments before about my initial tests of a CD and some DTS movie audio. Both of these I am still very happy with. Of course all my comparisons are against my previous Marantz SR5200, which I was also very happy with. To be honest I can't really find much of difference in Audio quality between the last unit and the yamaha. (Given the same speakers, shape of lounge room, diminishing quality of my hearing.....) Since the marantz died with a power surge a few weeks before the replacement I never really had a an opportunity to give it a side by side listen. I still keep reading about other similar models to the yamaha 3800, such as Deno 3808, Onkyo 875, etc, just to stay in the picture. I also stand by the reasons that I choose the yamaha over the other models for my situation. These reasons were good price, recommendation from my dealer, performance of the system when I checked it out in the demo room, and future proofed features like HDMI 1.3, dolby true HD, etc. Now that I've grasped the interface changes coming from the Marantz to the Yamaha especially the remote control, I am really comfortable with driving the unit. (Its also easy to use for CFO ~ wife) (and the 2 year old understands 'don't touch, thats Daddy's remote control) The graphical GUI for the setup is very nice and easy to follow. Now I can't wait till a blu ray or HD-DVD player which supports full bitstream audio output is released (and affordable). Regards, Gavin
hysteric2006 Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 cool man i cant wait to get mine, im hoping in about 3-4 weeks. But then i will be itching for a a blu ray player. Who wants to rob a bank with me??

Regards, Gavin My thoughts exectly so far. Once i have it fully set up next week ill give it a good run. I used to have the Sherwood Newcastle R965 which was an awesome receiver and the Yamaha so far has really impressed me. The GUI is great, once i got used to it after 15 min or so. The price, features and sound really make this a stand out choice so far. Next week I'll have more detailed imressions, nut if your waiting, just get one, you wont regret it

Hi Dazbug, just re-read the manual, Mark's comments about the 3800 not supporting component 1080p are correct. Refer page 22 of the manual. • The analog component video signals with 1080p of resolution are only output at the COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT jacks. Refer page 89 of the manual • This unit does not up-scale the analog component video signals with 720p or 1080i of resolution. Regards, Whitehawk
Guest Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 I havent reviewed this unit becuase personally I dont feel the audio stage has changed at all from the 2700 I owned previously. Of course Ive had many nice things to say about the 2700, so consider them the same for the 3800. However I dont feel this is a big enough upgrade for one to consider going from the 2700. YMMV.
kiwimeat Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 Eastwood Hi-Fi's latest gossip has this to say on the 3800.. October 8th - I'm still playing with the new Yamaha RX-V3800 at home. All the experts on the forums reckon it's no better than the 2700 in terms of audio and video - I'm telling you right now, there's a significant difference in the audio when playing a movie (not necessarily in stereo as my two channel listening is generally done in another room although I'll check that out later) - the centre channel is cleaner and the surround has a better staging (this is on default surround, none of those silly DSP settings for me). The picture quality on Foxtel when fed in as component and out as HDMI is slightly improved although you have to know what your looking for to see the difference. It wouldn't be worth upgrading from a 2700 (although it would from a 2600) but it's certainly the best A/V receiver for the money I've encountered. http://www.eastwoodhifi.com.au/THE_SHOP.HTM He does claim to be some improvements in the audio side but otherwise echo's MarkH's view that it's a marginal upgrade from a 2700. As a 2600 owner I note his comment that it would be a worthwhile upgrade from a 2600. I'll be putting this to the test shortly once my dealer gets demo stock.

Guest Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 kiwimeat, As a retailer I expect him to say the audio is improved. Technically its possible, but I can hear no improvements over the 2700. This is more a testament to the quality of the 2700, rather than a flaw in the 3800. I too am a retailer and I can say confidently that a cheap 2700 is the better buy. Of course for those starting again, this is a receiver to seriously consider.
