Jordang, you can see the clouding on my panel when a dark signal is present. The clouding is noticeable even when the room is fairly light, becomes more obvious as the room gets gets darker, and is completely distracting when the room is very dark (no home theatre experience for me then).

I've posted photos in the Bravia clouding thread. I have an SLR, I know how to use Photoshop, I could easily have made the problem seem more dramatic in my photos, but I chose not to. The photo I have posted (the one showing the signal from Xbox game) does not do justice to the problem - it is far more apparent to the naked eye, to both casual observers and myself alike (even my mother-in-law commented on the cloudiness when she was watching a dark movie).

If you live in Melbourne, you are more than welcome to pay me a visit and come and see firsthand what severe clouding is like. You'll see that it's not just a case of people being perfectionist, it's a serious and justified grievance.

Hey Magictorch,

Didn't mean to undermine your complaint mate.. my apologies. I was only talking off what i'd seen in the past, and some of the photos i saw on that avsforums site - the contrast and camera exposure were so obviously manipulated (you can see it by the sony light-up at the bottom, unless they replaced the bulb with 4000w halogen). Unfortunately these forums do tend to be filled with drama queens who like to ride a bandwagon.

This, unfortunately tends to mask people with legit problems, like it sounds you have.

Normally I would agree with you, but with all the documented problems with the current Sony, I'd definitely be waiting.

Not just with these problems on the current x-series, but this new series has two things that will affect me, and other PC - LCD users greatly. the 10bit color/100hz panel?? yayyyy! at the moment the 60hz limit on my sony means all games run at 60fps and that's it. i spend a fortune building this pc to a beast that can run games > 90fps and the damn vertical refresh cripples it.

I am waiting for the new model, only because I am in no hurry. Plus the Mrs didn't like the silver on the current model 46X (looks too much like my current screen and when updating I want that wow factor you get when it's different)

Returning products, contacting retailers and manufacturers all sounds difficult (and Sony could improve on aspects of customer service) but there are plenty of people out there who love their X series. From what I have seen, I will love it too.

I personally prefer black and the contrast it sets with the picture on the screen. Plus it will be easier to compare the blacks on the screen to the piano black surround making for easier assessment of the picture.

Looking forward to the feedback from others, once we all get a good look at it.

Thanks guys. Keep up the good work.

well... i still haven't got a tv... mainly cause i'm not sure what to do, i could go n get a sony x series (current model) but i am tempted to wait for the new samsung... then again i love the look of the current x series...

things stopping me... possible clouds, no HDMI 1.3 (not that i need it?), 1080p only over HDMI (i'd like it over VGA too)...

is that enough to not get a great screen for $4500? i have got the samsung pre-ordered for $4700 (altho i just got told i can get it for $4600)... worth waiting? i've got no idea

Even though the Sony Bravia "X" is probably the best LCD i have seen, having 1080p only through hdmi is the deal breaker for me. That's why i will probably buy the same Samsung panel as you when they arrive.

Has anyone found at any concrete information as these yet?

I was going to buy a 46" X but the whole issue of the clouds and Sony response put me off. I am hoping the new panels which must be a new generation of lcd if they are 100Mz will be subjected to better quality control.

I posted this in the Samsung LCD thread put it is just as appropriate here.

The ideal viewing distances for 1920x1080 displays showing true 1920x1080 video are:

40” 1.6 meters

46” 1.8 meters

52” 2.1 meters

At greater distances the human eye looses the ability to fully resolve 1080 resolution.

So if you don’t plan on viewing from close to the above maximum distances for the relevant screen size, display resolution should be low on your priority list.

Other performance factors will be far more important then display resolution, no matter how high res you video source, now or in 5 years time. So the notion that 1080 displays are required for “future proofing” is false unless you intent to sit close enough to the screen.

I disagree with this theory, mainly for one very good reason: while you may not (allegedly) be able to "resolve" the full 1080 lines if you're, say, 2 metres away from a 40" display, you can still tell the difference between 768 lines and 1080 lines. The human eye doesn't drop into 720p at these distances, after all.

Saw a 52 inch x series in JB Hifi Chatswood today. The bezel was matt black. Not sure if that's how the black option comes with it, but it looked magnificent compared to the standard bezel seen on other X2000s.

Poo to piano black, give me stealth black anyday.

(mine will be a 40inch, by the way. Think I'll wait for new model)
