yes good guide and fairly well balanced. I would have included:

A better explaination of the DB regions and where an australian can safely import from (ie europe). The way you have described it only adds to the uncertaincy.

In store availability may a factor to your typical consumer, so i'd suggest people see what available in stores before choosing a format

Was the size difference mentioned? i must have missed it.

Thanks Sedders, I will factor those suggestions into my next rewrite.

As to size difference, I may add it as an addendum point when for mre technically minded people. At present it is aimed for the average person trying to choose a starting point in HD.

*** please, this is not a troll. this is an honest question ***

does it really matter ?

The studios have shown that the size difference is not the differentiator that they made it out to be.

Pirates of the Caribbean has been announced, and it will be on 2 discs, a 50Gb for the movie, and a 25Gb for the extras.

Wasn't the entire selling point of BDs higher disc capacity that they would not need to do the 2 disc release thing anymore ?

Can anyone really tell me that POTC needs to take up 50GB ?

When you look at the inflated MSRP, it becomes obvious that the studios are already back to their old trick of charging extra for the 'super duper 2 disc limited edition'.

Andrew.

in theory it matters because it means that you cant have a faster bitrate, therefore higher quality picture or more lossless sound, but in reality most studios aren't using it, especially when they also release a hd-dvd at the same time.

Of course as mpeg4 gets better this becomes a moot point, but at the moment i think most people agree that those releases using mpeg2 with a fast bit rate is giving the best quality picture.

The reason for the two disc pirates release is either pure marketing (2 disc for the price of one concept) or Disney is maxing out the bandwidth of the bluray. I expect to see nothing less than AVC @ 30Mbps average with at least 5.1 24-bit/48kHz PCM audio.

I dont think the selling point was to prevent a second disc for extras, it was about the higher bitrate.

2 discs for the price of one doesn't work, the retail price is higher than the single disc releases.

It would be great if it is released at those high bit rates, but I have my doubts. Will be interesting to see just how much of the disc is actually used once it is released.

Anyhow, I'm dragging mo's thread off topic, so I'll stop now.

It could be that there's lots of HD extras and Disney didn't want to compromise the feature so they put it on another disc. I'm all for this.

I came across an article on HD-DVD Buyer's Guide on Tom's Hardware site (UK edition):

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/2007/02/21/h...uyers-guide_uk/

They've also mentioned another player in the mix (RCA HDV-5000), but concluded that it's just a rebadged Toshiba HD-A1. Anyhow, this article also talked and gave brief reviews on HD-DVD burners for the PC.

The author stated that they'll release a Blu-Ray Buyer's Guide in the future, as well as hybrid players. I'll post links when I come across them.

Mo,

I am getting a stream of PM's and seeing lots of threads asking for details on the PS3 as a blu ray player (price to pay for being a pioneer ).

They are all asking the same questions ....

So could you add the following to your guide please ?

Japanese PS3:

Has a dual voltage power supply. You just need an Aussie power cable.

Will play all PS3 games, there is no region coding.

Will play US and non region coded Blu Ray discs.

Will only play Japanese region PS1/PS2 games.

Nobody knows the warranty implications (assume you don't get one, or at worst have to ship it to Japan for warranty work)

Cheers,

Andrew.

It looks positive that dual format players will appear on the horizon momaw:

This fellow Amir (a microsoft insider) says:

The interest we see currently is from BD companies wanting to add HD DVD capability to their products. As such, we see nothing but goodness from this. But even if others want to build them, that is also fine by us. We have no exclusivity requirement for people to work with us. If they need our help to build HD DVD playback into any system, we are here to help them. . .On co-existence, that is where we are, and headed in the future.

This is the second time I heard "co-existence" from the Microsoft camp.

It maybe worthwhile to wait a bit longer for the dual HD format players to hit the shelves.

And that can only be a good thing.

I am happy that I have picked up my HD-A1 and PS3 combined for a little over the cost of buying either an Aussie HD-E1 or PS3 at full RRP.

This will get me through the next couple of years, until 2nd or 3rd gen dual format, region free players can be had for < $500.

i think co-existence will be good also. Most of us have more than one dvd player in our house, im sure in the future when prices go down people can afford 2 players.
