Wii're Here!

Are you sure about that djos? I read the manual in its entirety yesterday and there is definately no mention of progressive 576.

Its either 480i or 576i, or "EDTV" as they call it which is listed as only 480p (yes, despite this being an Australian model).

No not really, I was making assumptions - according to Wiki:

Video:

* Up to 480p(PAL/NTSC) or 576i (PAL/SECAM), standard 4:3 and 16:9 anamorphic widescreen.

* Component (including Progressive scan), RGB SCART, S-Video, composite output, or D-Terminal.

oh well, my plasma is 480p so it's not a big deal - it is surprising that 576i is support but not 576p. I imagine that it would have something to do with the internal frame rendering method used.

Im guessing that by default it renders interlaced fields effectively meaning that to render progressive frames requires 2x the grafix power(& bandwidth etc) and 576 is just to much extra resolution for the Wii to render progressively?

NTSC is 480p & PAL is 576P via component - the latter applies to us in Australia.

Btw does anyone know if Nintendo have region coding on the Wii, can we import games from OS without resorting to modchipping?

Its not region free, even though it was apparently going to be. There is a youtube video of someone attempting a japanese game in a U.S. wii. Did not work.

This really sucks because: A) the games you want might not necessarily be available. And :D the price for the US games works out to about A$65 compared to our $99 here.

One of my sons went to Big W at Garden City in Brisbane yeterday and they had plenty.

I gotta ask

Did he actually ask if they had any, or just spot the 'wall' full of empty Display Only boxes like most stores have?

Had a small party today, and the Wii was a hit. I tell you, the Xbox360 doesnt seem to involve so many people. Even spectators get a laugh out of it. Bowling, Boxing and Golf are amongst the favourites in that order from Wii sports.

The 360 is the same, 480p but no 576p support.

Finally living in a remote area has some advantages. The local EB was sold out to all preorders. The 16 y.o kid working there was looking at me like "are you serious, you expect us to have one for you the day after release, you should know better!" So I visited the local Kmart and they had 4 there.

No sign of any HDTV adapters though... are these available now?

The Wii doesn't do HD.

Set in PAL 50, and with 480p selected resolution, my old HD CRT TV used to tell me it was displaying 576p.

I played my brother in laws Wii yeaterday and being a cricket nut , I thought we'd try baseball. Absolutely brilliant, had a great time. Just gotta watch that swing though as I nearly clobbered my little boy.

I just checked, he did ask and it seems they only had two. EB Games at GC also had two but they were more expensive.

This raises the point of what games/sports would you like to see on the Wii? I think it lends itself brilliantly to cricket (batting and bowling like the Wii sports baseball game). Any other suggestions?

Yeah the baseball is pretty dang cool. My favourite is still the Wii Golf though. Had a great time playing it with a mate on Saturday and he loved it too, as well as the bowling which he kicked my @rse in. One of the major strengths of the Wii is undoubtably playing against/with other people in your lounge room. And to think Wii Sports is really only a demo to showcase what the console is capable of. But when a fully fledged golf game comes out for the Wii I'll be placing my pre-order in a heartbeat. :D

The hardest thing has been working out my gaming priorities lately. Trying to complete Gears of War single player, playing Wii Sports and Rayman, as well as working through F.E.A.R. Extraction Point on the PC. I really don't know how I'm going to fit in GoW multiplayer or Zelda yet. But it's a good problem to have I suppose.

A cricket game surely would be the ducks nuts..... I imagine EA would be working on that one.

My dad is pretty keen for a more realistic golf game - i think leaderboard and tiger woods 07 are coming in March 2007.

I only have WiiPlay and WiiSports at the moment, which are fun party games no doubt. I think I will pick up Madden 07 and CoD3 for my own amusement.

EA would never release a cricket game on Nintendo.

I think Gino is asking about the component cable that will be available...

Was there any new Virtual Console games released today?

Was there any new Virtual Console games released today?

Apparently not

Has anyone tried a Virtual Console game with the component cable?

Whenever I do, my Aiko LCD reports "No signal". If I switch to the regular a/v cable, it displays fine.

Exactly the same problem here too. Argh!

Anyone know where to get one in Melbourne ??? I tried about 10 stores yesterday and all sold out.

Got mine at launch, with Zelda. I played the other games on the first day, and for another hour or so on the weekend to show friends, but completely obsessed with Zelda. A *GREAT* game and although the motion sensing of the Wii isn't used THAT much, it is a very comfortable way to play. I need to get away from Zelda and get my component cables soon.

anyone with a wii, snap the wrist band off and make your own... go to www.wiihaveaproblem.com and you'll see what i mean.

sweaty hands, controller slips out of hand, puny wristband snaps and 40"+ screens get destroyed.

carefull lads. cheap console could turn VERY expensive

Yeah that is really unfortunate. The scary thing is that some of the hardcore fanboys seem to think people are lying when they have had their wrist strap break. I even tried offering advice to people on how to prevent this and i got told i was just trying to annoy people (i dont see how trying to protect people from potentially destroying property is a bad thing)

When i get a wii, ill definitely make sure my wrist strap is strong. I dont know when i will get one yet though, theres too many other things i need to buy

This sums up the situation quiet nicely:

:D

When i play Tennis, Golf, Bowling etc for real, i dont lose my clubs, racquet etc. So if u cant hold on to a remote while swinging it, a lame grip is the least of your problems.

I know Big W had a few on the w/e but dont know about now. Try calling them at 9am tommorrow and they will tell you. If you ring anytime within 5 min of opening u wait on the phone for hours !!

last week we found ours (at Myer) by asking every store if they had any preorders that were not going to be collected. Seems to spur the drone into asking some quality questions to supervisors etc. and presto - "Hey, yeah, we actually do have a couple out the back..."

I think games causing most trouble involve throwing (e.g. baseball, bowling), where the 'natural' action is to let go of the 'ball'... still it's not a ball, is it
