Wii're Here!

I have to admit I'm one of those guilty of exagerated movements in my 3 or 4 hours play so far. But it's kind of fun to do the full movements and throw the arms around a bit. I think after I've played it a bit more I'll settle down to more abbreviated motions. Some of the mini games in Rayman can get the heartbeat up a tad if you let it. I haven't yet played it long enough to notice any fatigue, strain or cramping issues.

Jace I've seen the pictures too of cracked TV panels caused by some over-enthusiasm with the Wii controller. Nintendo did say it was a whole new way to play games. They just forgot to add it's also a brand new way to ruin your home theatre equipment, if you're not careful.

Sounds cheaper than going to the gym for exercise!

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realise that you have to hang on tightly to the remote to ensure it doesn't get away from you. Perhaps this will just highlight the mentality of your average gamer. Anyone want to take bets on how long it will take before its a major story on ACA or TT?

Good Lord. Is this your typical Wii player?

Yes, but can you imagine what she'd be like in the bedroom.

There's also bound to be some law suits from this new way of gaming. Damaged property or someone who gets their eye poked out, or goodness knows what. All part of the Wii experience I suppose.

I haven't gotten sore playing Zelda, its pretty laid-back-on-the-couch-with-only-slight-gestures type of game if you want it to be. Wii Sports on the other hand I can only play for a little while before being stuffed

You lads reckons thats funny, check out this Wii Commercial; takes the piss outta the PS3!

Yeah I remember seeing it on one of the US tech shows I watch. A great ad.

Thanks for the review Felix, I put my PS2 on eBay the other day in anticipation of buying a Wii - I plan to buy Zelda, Call of Duty 3 and a couple of others. Im really looking forward to actually being able to play FPS games on a console properly for the first time (I hate traditional console controllers for FPS).

EB Games stores have a trade-in deal, you get a Wii for $199 when you trade-in an xbox or ps2 with something like 12 or 15 games.

Do the sums folks. Those EB deals are an absolute ripoff.

yeah I'll say, my PS2 is currently going for $279 on eBay with 6 days left!

Initial impressions, obviously not pleasing with graphics or sound, even when upscaled to 1080p. But who cares?! Didn't buy it for that. This whole motion sensor thing really creates something different and fun. My X360 will still be my main choice of console for gaming, but when you want something different, or have a bunch of mates over and you want to take the piss out of each other, it's value you rarely get with awesome graphics. You tend not to notice those downsides. It's not something that I could play for long though, it can get tiring at times, my right shoulder is a little sore after playing boxing and baseball, but also the novelty can wear off too. But, it's the first time the girlfriend joined me for a game for more than 10 minutes, and she was loving it, she kicked my ass in boxing and was laughing histerically. Just to see that was worth the $500.

So yeh, most games on X360 require more thought, practice, plenty of controls etc... this is something you can figure out in a few minutes and enjoy. Something you can play for a brieft stint when that's all you have. A problem with the X360 I found was when mates came over who don't play X360, or don't have the game, usually get owned by me, and that wasnt much fun. I'll report back when I try more games and had more time with it, but I have a small party on Sunday and will see how it goes down.

how does the controller work will it work in front of a projector screen? unlike my old gun games

It will depend on where you put the infrared sensor that comes with it.

Obviously, that will need to go near where you projector screen is.

Basically, Yes.

But have you tried to pick-up a Wii without pre-order today? If EB are setting some aside for trade-in, this *may* be the only way to get one before Christmas. JB have told me at three stores they won't get any more until January.

Finally living in a remote area has some advantages. The local EB was sold out to all preorders. The 16 y.o kid working there was looking at me like "are you serious, you expect us to have one for you the day after release, you should know better!" So I visited the local Kmart and they had 4 there.

No sign of any HDTV adapters though... are these available now?

One of my sons went to Big W at Garden City in Brisbane yeterday and they had plenty.

Does is output 480p or 576p?

NTSC is 480p & PAL is 576P via component - the latter applies to us in Australia.

Btw does anyone know if Nintendo have region coding on the Wii, can we import games from OS without resorting to modchipping?

Yes, depending on where you live. No sign of the component cables yet here in Perth a.f.a.i.k. Apparently they will show up in the West this Thursday. Not sure about the situation in FNQ. You would have to ask your local stores if they have an ETA. Some members here have either purchased them or seen them available since launch in Sydney and Melbourne amongst other places.

Are you sure about that djos? I read the manual in its entirety yesterday and there is definately no mention of progressive 576.

Its either 480i or 576i, or "EDTV" as they call it which is listed as only 480p (yes, despite this being an Australian model).

Yes that is correct.

This is the first console I have bought from the big N since the N64. I have a 360 as well. Graphically it can be ok to a little on the ugly side. This will be better hopefully when the developers get more time with it.

I love wii sports, Bowling is great fun, the family and I have had great fun since launch. The wife who will play the occasional game on the 360 absolutely loves it. She even downloaded Super Mario 64 to play. I think this console has great potential and I really look forward to the next gen! I reckon the others will follow suit with a similar controller.

At the price point it's at it will do well, we have already seen over 1 million fly off the shelves. Big N just need to keep the games coming and get as many third party developers on board. I look forward to some big franchises to take take advantage of this new controller.

cheers

Philby

My kids think its the best christmas present ever! ( yes I know it's early but we are going on holiday over christmas)
